How about 8th, 20th and 27th? Can Handypants (NYI) and Lipbalm (DAL) garner 1sts? I feel like both of those teams are going to want to add a piece or 2 this year.

Especially with the Isles playing better, Lou won't wait. Nill's gotta be thinking the same with some aging vets.

Here's hoping that we could do a little better return than 20th and 27th.  It's nothing to sneer at, but the result of that would be we buy at TDL to be a little more competetive.  I know you can't really compare trades from other years, but Bennett got a 2nd and a Heinemen (sp).  We pist it away to get Toffoli, which may have been a good trade, but shows what we tend to do.

Getting cap for Zadorov is fine, but it has amounted to nothing.

I didn't mean the picks alone, just hoping they can *also* garner 1sts. Teams wishing to acquire them will not be picking higher than 18th, not even maybe.

I guess Tij Iginla is rising up the ranks right now.  Maybe we need to spend the 8th to take Tij.

Adam Jiricek is who I'll be watching closely. Good size RD, younger bro of David, who is progressing nicely.

Dickinson's a great player, but at 3 is a pretty big stretch. Ahead of Eiseman was a laugher.

I still feel we going to finish 10 to 14th pick.  Might be outside of Jiricek range.  Yakemchuk could be a good target though.

gsus had to change my profile pick back from  Zadarov.

Hard not to want Tij here.

I know we should be going for D, and maybe goaltending, and most definitely not LWs.  But still hard.

I have to remind myself that his younger brother might be even better, and is a RW at just the right stage in our rebuild where we should be drafting RWs.

Why not both? Imagine Iginla - Iginla line up...

Tunnel vision/name recognition worries me the most...scout everyone like their last name is Smith. Just remember their actual name when you call it, Carey Price.lol

No thanks, Mike has destroyed that name for me, not even a fan of Smyth.

  • 2 weeks later...

I always enjoy SMAHT's rankings. Usually pretty balanced.

edit

Having said that, I also will go on record as not loving taking the guy they had at 72 last year, that early.

But I think we may have gotten a steal on their 46th oa.

I think the Flames will be picking in the 7-12 range. For what it's worth.

I tend to think 7-22 range.

Some days it seems like they will make the playoffs.

Then the next game it looks like they will battle the Sharks for position.

I guess it really depends if/when the trades happen.

There will be a drop off if they delete their #1 C and two top 4D.

I tend to view it as the kids come in to replace them and somehow we are better.

Also, the impact of the trade pieces can have a big impact.

Sharky was coming off a lesser year where he played less minutes.

He's now one of our top players and is basically tied with Toffoli in points.

The lesser played players coming in can have rebound seasons.

I hope that we don't just trade for picks.

Byram and a pick for Lindholm makes us overall a better team.

Mostly because preventing goals is our bigger issue than Lindholm's scoring.

Hanifin for a 3C would work, if the guy was young.

Tanev for picks would be okay or a pick plus a younger defensive D man not putting up points.

The other option with Tanev is to pay him $5-6M for one season with no trade protection.

Sell him next year.  The trade climate would be possibly better.

Pending lottery luck I’m thinking the flames are between 5-10. Don’t see them getting to the bottom 4 because I think their goaltending will prevent it and there’s already a pretty decent point gap there. Even post trades I don’t see the bottom falling out enough to close a 15 point gap or more.

this team hasn’t shown me anything that makes me think they’ll be a playoff team so I’m out on that one. Just a question of where they wind up before the lottery for me.

The Flames have 39pts in 39 games. Obviously, that's an 82 point pace.

Took a look at where 82pts ended up, in previous years.

22-23- there was no team that finished with 82, VAN had 83. They picked 11th.

21-22- CBJ finished with 81pts. 12th overall pick.

20-21- The Flames had 55pts in the 56 game season and ended up picking 12th.

Needless to say, the Flames are tracking to select 12th overall in June. The ultimate equalizer is the TDL. I believe there will be a drop-off. I get the argument that the young kids can bring energy, leading to wins. On the other hand, this is a pretty veteran roster, lots of vets will be checked out when the trades start happening.

Our first 10 games was 2-7-1 or .250 win%.

Part of the reason we are sitting at 39 in 39.

But more to the point, the cutoff based on WC2 right now is 86 points.

Non-WC teams like EDM and ARI have better points %, but only because fewer games played.

As long as CGY is close to a playoff team, it won't matter to the vets who is traded how they play.

They will play for playoffs with the same vigor.

If we are well out and basically eliminated, then they might tail off and play to not get injured.

I'm interested to see what picks we acquire beyond our 16th.😭

I'm thinking around 10 though. A LOT of teams are better than us. Stats aren't lying.

Or prospects/young NHLers of course. It would be nice to add a high IQ player. Jakub Pelletier would be a nice target.🤪

The team is one thing, but losing prime development time with him and Poirier is a whole 'nother great big drag.

We'll be needing more than draft picks though. Back to being active in FA no doubt.

It would be nice to finally get past 2 years of being the C of Red-headed stepchild.

I still can't believe Detroit's 2nd half and march to the Cup this year.

That was more in a, "look at the roster stats" sense.lol

There is nothing pretty here, just a surprise that we're actually flirting with .500.

Will we even have four 20 goal-scorers?

Will Huberdeau even hit his total from last year? 55pts.

Maybe we'll draft 4 20 goal scorers 🤞
