I would have to say our draft went to H during the Sutter years because they kept using our draft picks to bring in veteran players through trades. As you point out we only got back into having quality drafts since 2013 however they snuck in Gaudreau and Jankowski. You may find this odd but development is different for everyone, some players come out of Junior and are as good as they will ever be. Others will continue to grow physically and mentally with further repetition. This is what you hope for while they do time in the minors. I believe we are seeing better results because we have better prospects than prior to 2013.

I agree....except maybe for the part about Jankowski.   Again, not to knock him, or his great season this year.   Just not enough to call it a good pick, or a good trade of picks.  For a 2nd round pick, where he was rated...he has done very well.

I otherwise agree, but all we can do is assume that it is a combination of the picks and the development.   Very very hard to separate.   Players do plateau, yes.   But development is a big factor in how and when that happens.

It would be interesting to know the details of how various teams develop their players in the AHL. I wonder if some simply have more coaches, better coaches, more dedicated coaches etc. to speed along the whole process and effectively use resources. I would also like to know about how draft selection works. I know they have their scouts out there reporting to the staff. What are teams like Chicago, and Detroit more generally, doing to be so successful? I swear that Bowman has a crystal ball or something. Maybe his staff just have more scouts than the CIA has spies.

Blackhawks,

Red Wings,

...except the Blackhawks and Red Wings haven't drafted all that well in the past 10 years.  There are a few years in there in the early 2010's that they may have no significant player come out of those drafts.  2007 and earlier, ya, crazy.  Hit several homeruns there especially in the late rounds.

One of the best in recent years is arguably the Tampa Bay Lightning,

Congrats to Rasmus for getting into his first NHL game. Outside of being excited he must have thought why did they put me on the LS and with Wideman, they must really hate me here. LOL

Last night they should have put Wideman on the left side...   Of the LRT station outside the Dome...

Found this to be a really interesting chart. It measures the how often Anderson is on the ice for goal for, versus how his team does when he is not on the ice. Long story short, Stockton was much more productive with Andersson on the ice versus when he was not and Andersson is in some high end company when it comes to this measure.

Given Stockton wasn't a power this year, and looking at some of the names on that list, this has to be a pretty encouraging sign.

What's good is that he was better than Brodie at the same age.  No doubt he should provide BT with a difficult decision this summer.

I hope he makes this year's team. We need to start moving some of these better prospects up.

those show great promise but you can't compare what Rasmus is doing in the A and what TJ does different league all together but none the less very cool.

If you look again at the chart, you will notice it was Abbotsford that Brodie was playing in at the time.  Apples to apples.

I think it's worth noting that absolutely don't have the next PK Subban here, as certain skillsets are simply missing from that.

On the flip side, could he be a TJ Brodie type?

Yeah.  it think it's a possibility.

I would think more like Gio, due to his skating speed.  When he played his first NHL game, he reminded me of a Swedish Gio.  He's a bit more physical than Brodie.

I actually don't think either are good comparisons, but that wasn't the point.

That chart only shows 1 statistic and I don't think that stat in itself is a valuable one for comparison sake. I think if you want to derive anything from that chart it should only be that Anderson had himself a pretty good year last year and I think should confirm that Andersson is a very solid prospect.

I think drawing any other conclusions is getting ahead of ourselves.

Well either way, to clarify (and to Cross's point above) I'm not projecting him to be a TJ Brodie or a Giordano.   Just that it's within the realm of possibilities .  Both were late bloomers, and as such, compared favourably with many prospects at the age of 20.   But yeah, I still find this stat encouraging and I find a lot of things encouraging about Anderson.

I'm not looking at projections either.  Was simply looking at style.  Upright skaters.  Harder on the body and less stick work to strip the puck.  Brodie was less of a late bloomer than Gio.  PLayed almost a full season at age 21.  Ras will be 21 this year.

I don't think anyone's drawing conclusions.   On the other hand, we might be drawing possibilities.

Stats are tricky beasts.  Especially when the metrics are blurry, as they are for defensemen.   Which makes sense, when one of the core functions of your role is not to be noticed (not end up on the other team's highlight real).

While I understand that you are compelled to temper perceived expectations, I am not sure that everyone on here needs the tempering you think they do.  Just saying.   Most having gone this deep on an odd topic on the internet (which actually doesn't even involve porn) have taken the time to educate themselves a bit on the subject.  I could of course be wrong.

The stat, if calculated as presented, has to have value.  Any sequence of logical calculations which comes up with a list of players that exceptional later in their careers, Has to have something to it.  Sure, Pk Subban shows up on any stat you do at the age of 20.   The rest of them...there's too many late bloomers on there.  It's impressive.   The question I would have, is if those players were cherrie picked, or if they naturally showed up on the leaderboard like that.  Something I don't have time to check.

I have also noticed that Kylington was pretty close in points saying that I have no idea if the 2 are similar in defensive and offensive starts. I also don't know who gets the most PP min as well But Im positive one of you advanced members would have all that Knowledge. So tell us do you advanced members have any Idea if the 2 in question are as close as it looks on the stats point wise as there abilities on the ice defensive and offensive. In other words are they twins I know they took different roads to get here but they sure look to me like they could be 5and 6 on the the Flames in the near future not today but in the future I have always seen them playing together as a pair. I know silly me

That wasn't the intention actually. It was simple to just state I didn't think the chart or the analysis of the chart was in order to compare players in terms of their value only to value Andersson for a real solid season and recognize he is a very solid prospect.

Also, comparably, we'd have to look at the teams they played for. Are the Heat better as a whole now than they were when Brodie played there?

Apparently at the Season Ticket Holders meeting, BT had talked a bit about Andersson. Including that  Andersson is the most ready and will compete for a job out of camp. That he dominated the AHL for two seasons as one of the top defencemen in the league regardless of age, and was possibly the best defenceman in the AHL. And what was known for the last couple years, the only enemy of Andersson is his own conditioning. But he also revealed that Andersson moved to Calgary at the beginning of May to work with the Flames strength & conditioning and nutritional folks. So all of these are pretty promising signs that he'll be on the big club at the start of the season short of a disastrous pre-season.

Very encouraged to hear he moved here and would appear to be taking it very seriously. That wasn't really there early in his pro career so if that drive is there now the ceiling moved higher IMO.

If there was one part of his NHL game that worried me, it was his conditioning.  Not to say that he looked that slow, just that he didn't seem to be as mobile as I would expect.  Really wish he had had more time on the PP at the end of the year, since that is on area that he's supposed to be really good at (AHL/Junior).

I wonder what a PP blueline of Andersson/Hammy would be like.  Both have good shot, but Ras has a better slapper.

I look at both Ras and Kyl and they are very similar in points I know that Ras takes the harder min but Kyl isn't that far behind so it could be a good chance Kyl takes Rases spot away I see his work out pics and Kyl is pretty chiseled skates faster and can shoot as well as Ras so I say Ras better come in this fall in the best shape of his career or he will be looking up at Kyl.

I agree Kyl is likely closer than most of us think.

But he plays LD, Rasmus plays RD.

If anything, we could look like this to start the '19 season:

Gio-Hamilton

Vali-Hamonic

Kyl-Andersson

Kulak

Or something of the sort.

Then there is still Brodie and Fox to consider.

Nice predicament to be in, but really need to decide who is traded, likely within a year, imo.
