Chance to make playoffs? Draft lottery?

Just had an interesting idea… Imagine if both Flames and Panthers limp into the playoffs and eventually face each other for the cup!! Unlikely, but would be a good story!

A good story, but as unlikely as the Tkachuk brothers facing off in the playoffs.

In the big, big picture (next 5-7 years), it's a blip.

 

This off-season though, that's another story.  No need to be a sweetheart then.

 

Is there a big difference?  Seems like this year, you see lots of prospects ranked between 10 to 25 changing ranking positions daily.

That's Normal and should continue into the playoffs,  but I think yes.

I guess you could argue either way looking at the last huge draft.

The chances of passing WPG are remote now, even though we are only 1 point behind them.

They have three games to get 3 points that would eliminate us and NAS.

NAS only needs a win over us to overtake us in the standings and two games to get past us.

 

On the other side of the coin (drafting side).

We are close to being passed by 2 teams, both NAS and Buffalo.

Buffalo has 4 games in 5 nights, two sets of B2B's.

Best case scenario for us is BUG gets 5/6 points to pass us and we get zero points.

That puts us at 13th overall.

Winnipeg not falling apart at this point.  Up 3-1 after 2.

A win and anything less than a win by us and we are out.

A win and they need one point to eliminate us in their remaining 2 games.

A loss by us and NAS has a chance of catching WPG.

Very slim.

 

So, the Flames will know the results of the game before they start.

They haven't shown killer instinct at this point, so I wonder if they mail it in.

 

EDIT - Oops had the wrong start time for the Flames.  We won't actually know the final result until puck drop or slightly after.

And all that remains now is final draft position. No playoffs and likely a less than appealing draft spot.

we all knew this was the inevitable . It's what being a Flames fan is. We are always in it, and even when we aren't, we fight for the worst possible draft position outside of the playoffs.

Buffalo still has an outside chance of passing the Flames.

Currently, we sit at 91 with one left.

NYI is ahead of us with 91 and one left.

NAS with 90 and 2 games left.

Pitts with 90 and one left.

BUF is 87 with 2 games left.

 

Either NYI or PITTS will pass us by virtue of being a playoff team.

If both do, then we are 15th.

If NAS does, then 14th.

If BUFF does, then 13th.

 

But we are the Flames.

Guaranteed that whichever team that doesn't push past us will win the lotto and get a low overall pick.

Or worse, we pick up one or two points and jump out of the spot that gets the lotto win.
