I agree with the center thing. And isn't Knight becoming sort of a face-off specialist down with the baby Flames? The big club has been getting killed in the dot lately.

From what I understand Arnold is our best face-off man on Addy, but Knight is still a solid option (but not 100% sure, seeing as I can't find their FO% stats. I just hear a lot more about how Arnold is put out in a lot of important faceoffs). Similar numbers in the AHL by both, but Knight is a bit more of a shooter.

Knight is a better option for a 4th line center. Arnold's game is more like Backlund's; defensively responsible.

But this thread is about Poirier. We don't need him yet. He is going to be very good given some time to work on his complete game. As I see it, right now here is where he stands:

  • Skating - check
  • Goal scoring - check and re-check
  • Gritty - check
  • Bigger - tall but needs a few more pounds of muscle for the NHL; he is still very young
  • Defensive game - work in progress, but he is a plus player now
  • Maturity - can't comment, but he is so intense that his temper/playing style will get him involved in scrums

Knight has more time in the pros then Poirer and fills a bigger need down the middle, if anything im surprised he got called up before Billy Arnold. With all of Johnny's success i figured they would want to see what the other BC alumni could bring.

Ad far as drafting Poirer everyone on this site gave a collective "who?" When his name was called but there was plenty of video for us to get excited about on YouTube especially when it comes to his blazing speed and hard nosed play.

Is he the better pick over Hunter? Thats yet to be determined butnit certainly looks like a win from where im standing today.

Honestly I was just happy we didn't pick Shinkaruk just because he was a "hometown boy" and all I heard about was his attitude and not his play.

I sure as heck didn't see Poirier getting picked but so far looks like a great pick to me, I hope he keeps up his strong play and makes it to the big leagues full time in a year or two.

I think we will see a bunch of the rookies move up and down. Unless they perform like Granlund or Jooris and force the team to keep them up. Reinhart got his chance. Ferland and Knight are getting some time. I think we will see Arnold and Poirier eventually. But they are both in their rookie seasons in the AHL so there is no rush. I think there is a decent chance Hanowski is the next forward called up.

I think as long as the calgary flames are winning I'm not sure you'll see Poirier and I'm completely fine with that. I don't think you mess with a good thing and when they get some players back I think Poirier moves down the list. I think well see him at some point but there is no rush

I have yet to see him play other than a few video clips, but from what little I've seen and everything that I've read, I'm real excited about this prospect.

I dream about a fast, nasty, scoring right winger.

I hope that his name is Emile Poirier.

Everytthing that I have read or heard about Poirier indicates that he is a Quebec version of Sam Bennett; gritty, skilled, hard hitting, speedy.  If both are available for training camp next season, I would be surprised if they didn't make the team out of camp.  Maybe I am presuming too much, but I think Emile is going to have a rookie AHL season like Granny Apples did last year.

It's sure looking like he going to with another big two points today against the baby Wild. 1-1-2, +2 with the GWG

The kid is a beauty.  I'm actually more intrigued about him at this point than Sam Bennett. I know what we get with Sam, but Poirier, not many people know what kind of ceiling this kid will have, nor what his average will be, or his floor.

He has always been #1 on my prospect watch list since we drafted him and I saw the films. About 30 minutes after I said "Who?" from the draft, I figured this guy had a super high ceiling.

Big time acceleration did you see him skate outside some of those defenders from the blue line in some of those vids above.....

He might be the fastest skater we have both on the team and in our prospect pool at this time.

He has hands and is a goal scorer. He should fit in with all our great playmakers we have.

He has a pinpoint wristshot and a nice quick release on his slapshot.

Sounds like a bigger version of Byron, that can finish. Byron with a mean streak. Le Byron.

To me the skating is the icing on the cake. Its the fact that he's got such a well rounded game.  He fights, he scores, he skates like the wind, and he's a shift disturber too.  Gritty and willing to do what it takes to win.  He's a perfect replacement for GlenX,  but I project a much higher ceiling.

I can't wait to see what his game is going to look like in 5 years in the NHL.

He's got a much bigger swiss army knife of skills than Byron ever has.  Byron is a guy that is forgettable with a few notable streaks.  From what I've seen in Poirier's game, he's noticeable every time he's on the ice.

The funny thing about his skating is that it was described as choppy or unconventional.  His stride was unusual, but he still managed to get to top speed quickly. Imagine if they actually improve his skating.

Byron's biggest asset is his heart. Not the most skilled guy, but you notice his skating and his hits.  I am yet to see Poirier play in a pro game; was disappointed he wasn't ready for pre-season. Considering he played injured last season, he may be a real gem of a find.

Looking forward to see him get a callup this season.

I have watched almost all the Adirondack games this year (missed 3 at the beginning of December), and Poirier has been for Adirondack as Gaudreau has been for Calgary. Obviously the most dangerous player on the ice every time he's out there. If he wasn't a first year pro coming off a long injury, he would already be in Calgary.

The biggest stand outs this season for Addy have been Bill Arnold, and Ryan Culkin. Other players have had hot streaks like Ferland, Hanowski, Baertschi, Knight and a few others. Sven is finding his way and looks more and more like the guy that first played for Calgary instead of what he's been the last couple seasons.

I see him a future goal scorer for the flames. This is a player that can put up 20-30 plus goals in the NHL as long as he stays healthy.

Poirier and Ortio have been named to AHL All Star Team.

This is great news.  Poirier is back strong from injury and back on track with his development.  There's talks that maybe he should get a cup of coffee in the NHL for a few games before the season is over but i think there's no point because there's the chance he might put up a ton of points and then the pressure will be huge on him next season to score.  Just keep him in the AHL playing well and get him ready for the Flames for a full season 2015/2016.

To me, Poirier is our top prospect ahead of both Sven and Bennett. I am not saying Sven won't one day play full time in the NHL nor am I saying that Bennett won't end up being an impact player in the NHL. What I am saying is Poirier fills the position we are IMO weakest. I watch him play and I see a player that will come in and be the winger we need for years to come.

Some may not agree with me but I think him playing with a NHL center be it Monohan or a future Bennett will give him even more production. I think he could play his best hockey with a guy like Jooris.

Poirier may even be Iginla 2.0 I know I know, but listen he is a very offensive gritty guy that has ( from what I have seen ) a faster game than Iggy did, I know some will get made at me for my next statement but I think Poirier has a more rounded game than Iggy at this age. Poirier plays a full game on every end of the ice and if he can continue to develope he will sell ALOT of jersey's in Calgary.
