Personally, I'd leave Poirier in the AHL this season unless/until we really need him.

A whole year in Adirondack lighting up the league will give him a lot of confidence.

That said, he should at least get a taste of the NHL before the end of this season.

I predict good things for him next year.

I hope Poirier stays in the AHL right now and lights it up, get a injury call up possibly after christmas to see where he's at. And every kid we possibly can send down will for when(Hopefully) Addy gets into the play-offs at the end of the season.

Very curios to see how his game translates to the NHL.

Early on he has translated junior success to the AHL.

Dude, you have posted one line posts in about 20 different threads in the space of about 10 minutes. Do you have a points to this? Are you just wanting to up your post count so you can enter a stupid contest? If that's the only reason, then why don't you just stick to posting in the contest forum.

I enjoy reading posts from Flames fans new and old, but you don't seem to be saying anything. One line posts that either agree with somebody or ask an obvious question (like is Coda Gordon still a prospect).

Somebody please let me know if there's already a thread on this and I've missed it?

I think we've got a real good handle on the Keegan Kanzig discusson, and it might be time to start talking about our first round picks.

I'd actually hoped someone else would start this thread that was a bigger fan of Poirier.  I'm sure those fans are out there (somewhere?), so please speak up.

I have to start off by saying that we passed over Hunter Shinkaruk, generally ranked 12th overall, to pick Poirier with our 22nd pick (slated for the 2nd round).

After witnessing the strength of Chara in the Stanley cup playoffs, we saw a huge shift towards larger players this draft, sending mid-sized players such as Shinkaruk significantly down from their original ranking.  Nobody seemed to notice that Chara didn't actually win the cup, and that the playoff MVP was a smaller player by the name of Patrick Kane.

With that preamble in mind, behold Emile Poirier:

Thoughts?

Love watching him in junior

I'd like to see Poirier given a taste of the NHL before the season ends, but want him lighting up the AHL for most of the year.

Next season, I hope that he shows enough to play RW on the Flames 3rd line.

If he is the top prospect on the farm, and we need to bring one up, he gets the call. Not to play on the 4th line, though. That better suits a Hanowski/Knight/BVB.

If our existing call-ups get sent back down at some point, you have to reward guys that stayed and put up decent numbers.

I don't like to see any of our prospects play 4th line minutes; unless the Flames are forced to by injuries.

It's very difficult to get a proper read on any prospect when they only play 5 minutes per game.

They should all get a shot at the 3rd line when deserving of a call-up.

The point of having a 4th line is to have the ability to roll 4 lines. In that scenario, we are talking 10 minutes a game without special teams time. We are just used to restricting minutes because McGrattan or Bollig can't be on the ice for too long. I have no issue with Jooris or Knight or Hanowski (assuming he can keep up) or BVB playing on the 4th line in that context.

I'm all for the concept of rolling 4 lines, but Calgary hasn't had the talent to do so in recent years.

My comments were reflecting that.

I do see it changing slowly and will be happy when it can be done.

Keep an eye on ice time tonight for the BRB line (Bollig/Reinhart/Bouma). That could give you an indication of trending that way. With Big Ern in the lineup, that goes out the window.

Man, Poirer is still tearing up the AHL. He has 9 points in 8 games. For a 19 year old going right from junior to AHL, he sure hasn't taken much time to adjust. How long until he gets a call-up? I want to see him have sky-high confidence before he does.

Most fans myself included were not happy with the pick. As of right Porier is producing more than Shinkaruk. Poirier was out with the shoulder injury and he has been able to step in and produce. Very excited to see what he will be able to do in Calgary when his chance comes. I thought he was gonna be the next call up but I guess that the larger sample size from Knight was more attractive. I am pretty confident that he will get a chance this year. So far the team has done a good job rewarding good performances.

Poirier is doing amazing and I was pretty happy with that pick. Preferred him of Shinkaruk but was hoping Kirby Rychel would fall to us on that pick. So far though, I am more than happy and quite impressed with Poirier. Frankieboi, as for Knight being more attractive: I think it was because they wanted a centerman (notice how Reinhart got sent down at the same time).

I was more then excited that we passed over Shinkaruk in favor of Poirier.

Shinkaruk has a attitude problem, if he didn't he could of been picked earlier, and we don't need that in our dressing room. I honestly wasnt impressed with his interview after he got passed up by us and it further proves my point that the flames chose right by picking Poirier.

Poirier on the other hand seems like a kid that will give his all to be on the main roster and that's exactly what we need.

I agree with the center thing. And isn't Knight becoming sort of a face-off specialist down with the baby Flames? The big club has been getting killed in the dot lately.

I think if a fan tells you Poirier is exactly who they wanted the Flames to pick they would be lying. He was projected as a second rounder and we gave up our second first round pick in what is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts in recent history.

But so far it looks to have paid off. One of our top NHL prospects and our best RW prospects. Looks like a great pick.

Those projections aren't consensus.  The Flames knew what they were doing (can't find the source, but read that the Canadiens had the inside track on him as well), also he wasn't as 'mediacized' as the other popular first rounders.  Especially with the likes of local boy Hunter Shinkaruk.  Most Flames fans, and the Canadian media played up the whole skipping over the local boy scenario for 'another' unknown from the east.  Especially the Q.

Most of the media/fan frenzy stemmed from the Jankowski pick.

I agree. But it was a "huh" "who" moment for most fans when the pick was made.
