They are only concerned with scoring goals and individual awards.

AT least they added depth at C by signing Turris.

But it will be fun to see them lose games 6-5 or 4-0.

Mike Smith is 38 already.

Holy Crap.

They don't appear to be to concerned with next years draft either, with 2 picks in the top 5 rounds.

A flooded goalie market and the best you wind up with is to return the same tandem that wasn’t good enough last year?

Never change Oilers.... never change.

The funny thing is Smitty wants to retire real bad, but hey, for 2M he'll dust off his Kimona.

Well, it's actually a 1.5m deal with performance bonuses.

The point is the same.

The Oilers improved center depth, though they probably use him on a top wing spot.

They added a PP specialist and offensive D-man, but that was not a problem.

Not sure we can throw stones, but goaltending was an issue for us.

We addressed that.

The enthusiasm Joey Moss had while working for the Eskimos and Oilers was remarkable, and no one sang the Canadian anthem louder or prouder...

RIP Joey Moss...

I did not realize this, but he was the brother of a girl Gretzky was dating and Gretzky approached Sather about offering him a job.  Must have been a dream come true for a hockey fan.  For all the Oiler fans out there, he was genuine.  Big loss to that team and their fans.

That's right, Gretz was 20 at the time, and dating Moss's sister Vikki...   and whenever we saw him throughout all those years, Joey Moss looked like he loved every minute he spent with both the Oil and the Eskimos...

It sounds like the Oul have made some decent small signings this offseason that might push them a bit further. It might be something to be concerned about because they’ll have a few guys that can fill out their top6 and just need to be ok. Draisaitl and McDavid might not have to play on the same line in order for the team to be successful. For them, they’re the type that can make lesser players better.

Aside from Kahun, what have they really accomplished?

Kelfbom out, Barrie in.

Kahun was a decent signing, but Rieder was a similar producer when they signed him.

AA out, Poolparty in.

How much better will he be than the last time he played as an Oiler.

He was outscored by a defenseman in Liiga that has less than 25 NHL games

Turris in.

Last chance for him to really show he has anytihng left.

An aging Smith replaces an aging Smith in nets.

Scoring goals was not the issue there, scoring 5v5 was.

McD and Drai on the ice accounted for a lot of goals against.

They did well with Nuge-Drai-Yam but it meant that the top line had McD with Kassian and Ennis.

I just don't think they did enough to fix the issues.

Maybe a bit better 5v5 scoring.

Less defensive ability.

Pinning their hopes on a inconsistent tandem in nets.

yup their goatending will be their achilles heal.

Poolparty could be better, could be the same. I don't really take note of what happens in other leagues. Some guys absolutely suck in other leagues but can play better with better players. Some have said it's easier to play in the NHL because the play is cleaner and faster. Sloppy play sometimes scew the numbers. Not that Pool is gonna suddenly be a 20-30 goal scorer. If he does, it's because MCD or Drai has made him look better.

You're right, I think their biggest problems are on the D.

But they do have probably a better top9 forward group. It depends on how they fit...

Looking at the top 9, I can't figue out what makes sense from a lines perspective.

Nuge-Drai-Yam was their best line in the 2nd half.

They have McD, Drai, Nuge, Yam, Kahun, Ennis, Neal, Turris, Kassian, Chaisson, Poolparty, Archibald.

A deeper top 9, but they are banking on a turnaround by Turris and Poolparty.

Neal only produces when he gets at least 3rd line plus top PP minutes.

Pooly is not ready for top 6 yet (if ever).

Kassian is only remotely worth his contract by playing with McD.

3rd line should by rights be Neal-Turris-Poolparty, but that means Kahun and Ennis on the top line.

Or Kassian up there.

No idea how they make it work.

Even with two NHL top scorers, they still struggle.

Load up the top line with Nuge-McD-Drai and the 2nd line has no C.

Nuge-Drai-Yam was their best line but leaves McD with crap.

Oilers suck

(missed saying that with the message boards down)

The Oilstains have done a lot in the off-season.

Replaced a guy who will miss the entire season, or so was recently decided.

Brought back Olli, er I mean Puljujarvi.

Signed a couple of guys that they can hold accountable for missing the playoffs.

Signed Turris after a season where he was a minus player and bought out.

Said to be high on fixing the goaltending situation.

Solution - re-sign Smith.

For me, the Oilers are not better than they were last year. The big problems I saw with the Oilers last were 3 things:

1. They don't defend well

2. Their goaltending is bad

3. They get nothing out of their top 6.

Their D core is returning unchanged and IMO actually takes a step back with the loss of Kelfboom. I liked the Barrie signing but all that does is replace Klefboom on the PP (which was already one of the best units so how does it get better?)

They returned the exact same tandem and Smith continue to get older.

I like their signings of Ennis and Kahun as well there is a bit of a wild card there in Puljujarvi. however, Ennis was there at the end of last year so you are realying on Kahun and Puljujarvi to move the needle? Pretty tall task and while the talent may be there in Puljujarvi the odds of him become the impact player some thought pre draft would take a pretty unprecedent turnaround.

So i'm not see where they are better, I see a team that had major flaws last year and addressed none of them. I can actually see a team that goes backward just as easily as i can see them going forward given the fact that special teams really carried the Oilers last year. Tough to sustain that year after year.

Puljujarvi has a chance to come in and impress.

He's coming in from 2 partial seasons in a lesser league on big ice.

Sure, we were impressed with how Valimaki has played there, but he's also outscored Puljujarvi.

As a defenseman.

And Valimaki had looked NHL ready even two seasons ago, while Puljujarvi hasn't.

I like the Kahun signing, but are the expectations even higher than when they signed Rieder?

He was just a couple years removed from back to back 30+ points seasons.

Expect a fight between Puljujarvi, Kahun and Yamamoto for top 6 minutes.

I tend to agree that the Oilers have not really improved.

The holes are still there.

They have added some offense, which really wsn't their problem.

Maybe the bottom 6 was bad, but I don't think the minutes are there to improve them that much.

As in he moves to LTIR or what?

The "unit to play" designation" is a very vague title designed to give some players privacy/protection around COVID. It could mean an injury or it just could mean something COVID related.

LTIR isn't relevant during training camp so we likely would not know anything about the long term implications, or potential cap implications, until later in camp. This early in Camp it would likely be related to COVID but we'll see.

I hope he’s ok. I don’t with too much ill will on him. He sucks as a guy in the locker room but, hope he’s healthy. Plus so that he doesn’t have to go in LTIR and then his cap is saved.

I wish we could get new radio announcers. As guys, they're some of the nicest you could get, but they talk too much and far more into nostalgia than what is actually happening on the ice at the given moment... Which is supposed to be what theyre talking about...

Honestly, I have no idea how you can listen to hockey and get anything out of it.

I watched tonight with Loubo and the other guy.

Doesn;t do the game justice.

I'm the type to watch a game with the sound off just to enjoy the sport without the talk.

Had to do that whenever I watched the Oilers play.

Quinn was Mr Catchphase who would announce the McD or Drai goals even when they missed or the goalie made a good save.

Worse homer I ever listened to.

Glad they moved Debrusk to full time Oiler shill.

And got rid of Quinn.
