2 goals on 10 shots so far. Terrible.

Ortio isn't our saviour. He might not be any better the Hiller or Ramo. I don't think anyone is suggesting that he is the savior. But having him sit in the press box while the Flames struggle with poor goaltending from their vets didn't make sense. I am fine with him playing backup Friday. At least he is "part of the equation" now. That assumes they send Ramo down and don't keep running with three.

We have 3 goalies. We are waiving a goalie so we can get to 2 goalies. It's not message that goaltending has been bad. I mean it has been. Terrible really. But this had to happen at some point. It was just a matter of who and when.

Ramo let on his classic weak goal and was ultimately pulled. Hiller gave up two much net playing out of position on two goals. Both goalies were poor tonight. This season our goalies are 0.867 and 0.879 for save percentage. There have been 4 or more goals against in half of our games. We have won a single game. It is inexcusable that Ortio is sitting the press box. I understand there are other issues. But that doesn't mean you ignore this one.

If that is true, and I think it is, then why is the coach so insistent on playing the guys that nobody else in the NHL wants. He said it. He is loyal. These are the guys he has won with. Ortio is a third by default and as such not part of the equation. But sorry Hartley. Your an NHL coach. Ortio is available and as such needs to be part of the equation.

Yup. Hartley made it clear that he doesn't like having 3 goalies. For him Ortio isn't even there. This is on Treliving to mix things up. That said, I still think Hartley needs to get over things. You have 3 goalies. Deal with it. Two are struggling. Play the third.

I don't think the Flames are intentionally sitting Ortio in order to showcase a goalie. I think the decision on who to play has been the coaches who is doing the best he can with 3 goalies. Treliving needs to waive a goalie if he can't trade one.

It isn't just about Ortio. It is also about the extra roster spot. We have a lot of injuries. We also have a bunch of players that need to be sat. But we don't have the roster space to do it because we have it wasted on a third goalie. Also, the fact that the team isn't good doesn't excuse all of the issues noted above (young goalie needing playing time, weak goals, 1-year contracts with no future, needing to know what we have in Ortio, etc). You are correct that it is only 5-games. It could be as early as tomorrow that this is no longer a problem. But until it is resolved it is a problem warranting discussion.

Especially with all of the injuries. We need that roster spot. I don't get it. We are losing. The goalies are bad. Ortio "earned" the roster spot as he was the best guy in camp. I get that Hartley is in a tough spot. He is sticking with his guys that got him there last season and he has that choice because he is forced to carry 3 goalies. He doesn't want to split games 3-ways because that disrupts everything. It's also tough for him to put this on the goalies because the team in front has been terrible. But he needs to get over that. And Treliving needs to intervene and fix the 3 goalie problem. EDIT: On waiving Ortio. All respect to Hartley, but he doesn't have enough info to not have confidence in Ortio. The kid looked good in the A and he looked good in preseason. He also looked good last season during his NHL call up outside of an Anaheim blowout. He needs to play him to find out what they have in him. I am normally a fan of letting the coach coach. But in this case Treliving needs to intervene. If Ortio doesn't work out they need to consider trading for a goalie who is a better long term option then Ramo or Hiller. We aren't rebuilding anymore and we can't be okay with sub par goal tending with no future. Sticking with Ramo and Hiller this year and then trying to figure it out next summer isn't acceptable IMO.

Can we play Ortio now? Please?? Pretty pretty please??? Sometimes Hartley is downright stubborn.

Keeping Ramo was the right decision. It protects and asset and forces competition for the position. Especially Ortio. But Ortio earned starts in the preseason. And here we are with mediocre tending and three goalies with Ortio not even getting back up duties. It's not an ideal situation and the GM needs to fix it pronto.

Losing the game wasn't Ramos fault. But regardless of how he played, you can't have goalies letting in goals that soft in a tie game with a couple of minutes to go. Ramo is incredibly inconsistent. In his first game hr makes the save of the year and follows it up with a weak goal a minute later. The point isn't to blame Ramo though. It's to point out that we don't have Price in net. Our goaltending was mediocre last season and weak this season. No reason to keep the kid in the press box.

    Goaltending

Classic Ramo tonight. Great game, but then he let's in a horrible horrible goal at the worst possible time. Goaltending is a weak spot for the club. I don't understand why they don't give Ortio a shot. How many times do we see a kid like that step up? Happens every season. Give it a shot. Goaltending has been terrible for the Flames. Why risk Ortio on waivers so you can keep mediocre goaltending? Especially when both are free agents after this season. It isn't just about Ortio being waiver eligible. We need a change. We need to know what we have in Ortio. And there is zero reason not to give it a shot. Ortio should get the start tomorrow. If he doesn't I am concerned.

Horrible decision if they do that. The Flames have two mediocre veterans on 1 year contracts. Keeping both of them over a guy with a future is the wrong thing to do. If Treliving is absolutely sure he clears then fine. But otherwise no way.

    Goaltending

Looks like Ramo gets the start Friday. A bit disappointed that Ortio doesn't get the call as neither Ramo or Hiller have been good. But Hartley hates running three goalies. With the occasional exception, expect him to run two barring an injury or trade.

    Goaltending

Considering the coach wasn't part of the historical issues and he is the one making the decision, yes they are competing hypothesis. But that fact refutes you hypothesis (aka conspiracy theory) entirely anyway. I don't like the fact that Ortio hasn't started yet. I don't like the fact that the Flames are carrying three goalies. If Ortio is traded, waived, doesn't get future starts, or if they carry 3 goalies long term then I will be concerned. But it's too early to be crying wolf. Using past history of a different of a different regime to justify the cry is silly.

Occam's Razer and all of that. What is the simplist explanation? That the coach, in the first two games, started the guys he is familiar with and had last season? Or that there is a systemic organizational feer of young goalies that has persisted through multiple GMs and coaches?
  19. kehatch

    Goaltending

Let's not make something out that isn't there. This isn't a systemic issue. Anyone involved in hockey decisions from the past is gone. This organization also has a first year playing starter in the AHL and Ortio is still with the big club. I think this is simply a situation where a coach has his guys that got them in the playoffs last season and doesn't have any incentive to change things up. But sooner or later the decision will be taken out of his hands (injury or trade) and Ortio will get his starts.

    Goaltending

From a GM perspective I would like to see Ortio play to see how he is doing. It will help with decision in who to trade. From a coach perspective you play who ever you think gives you the best chance to win. Hartley at least doesn't have the faith I Ortio he has in the other two. I though Ortio was really good in the preseason. I would have preferred to see him get a start early.

Hiller looked food tonight. I am conflicted. If I had to decide right now I would keep Hiller and Ortio.

I am a little surprised Ortio hasn't got a start yet.
  23. I have always compared Wotherspoon to Butler and I stand by that comparison. Meh would be the most complete description of him. He lacks bite. He isn't great at anything. He could play in the NHL, but if he is on your roster it's because of a lack of options rather then because he is bringing anything to the team. Harsh comments for sure. But he hasn't done anything to dispute them. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Flames move him for another troubled prospect.
  24. Adirondack missed the playoffs last season. Sometimes you need players like Walter, Street, Kolanos, etc to provide stability and experience to the team. Hamilton is also still a prospect. He was drafted the same year as Bill Arnold for example. I can't remember ever watching him so I can't say for sure what he could be. But from what I have read he looks like what you want from a fourth liner. Defensively responsible with good size who can play the PK. I doubt he is going to be a scoring forward, but he might develop into a depth forward. But even as a career AHL player he had value. The pick was also conditional. My guess it is based on the number of NHL games he plays.
