  1. I think Kessel will cost more than you think. Phaneuf probably won't. But I think Kessell will be expensive. On another note, welcome back. Where in the heck have you been hiding?
  2. I agree. And I think Treliving is looking. He will want someone that we can get without unloading big young assets. He will also want someone that he thinks can be a long term option. I still like Franson. I get he is a pending free agent and will be expensive to sign. But I think he fits the bill nicely for the Flames and I would be okay with giving him a decent contract.
  3. We are fragile at D. Our top pairing is really good. Our second pairing is okay, but we rely a lot on our top pairing to put the second pairing in favourable situations. Wideman is also inconsistent and can go through pretty rough stretches defensively. Our biggest issue is depth though. Having a strong top 4 goes beyond simply having 4 good guys. We don't have anyone below them that can play up if we have an injury. Not on the bottom pairing and not in the system. That makes our top 4 very fragile as a single injury could derail us.

Ortio looks very human tonight. My guess is he is sent down and Ramo is activated. He will be back though. Probably pretty soon.

I don't think anyone is saying it is too soon for him to play in the NHL. We are saying its too soon to anoint him as the next Kipper based on 2 NHL games this season. I am fine having him back-up Hiller this season if we get a decent return on Ramo or if Ortio keeps earning starts. I am also fine with him doing that next season instead.

Hiller is tough to trade because he is paid as a starter. Even if we retain half the contract I think that is a tough move with another year on the contract. Besides, I would be concerned with just Ortio inked past this season. I think you can move Ramo and I think it may happen. I am still not sold Ortio is the goalie of the future. I am not saying he isn't, but I need to see more. Sure he has been good in two NHL starts this season. But look at his 11 games over the past two seasons and it isn't as rosy. Keep giving him starts until he loses the baton. Then assess. Putting hin back to the AHL doesn't hurt anything. Unless you get a 2 round pick or better for Ramo (which I doubt you do) there is no rush.

Sounds like Ortio will get the start tomorrow.

I think my people are positive. Most just aren't ready to start trading away players based on his success in a single game. I wonder if he gets another start though. Ramo didn't sound serious and we have a rest until our next game. I hope they let Ortio start next game and see how he looks. But if Ramo is good to go he might not get that chance.

Ramo may not have anything to do with lots nights game. But he does with this everything you speak of. It was one game. Let's see number 2.

Smid and Engelland are a TERRIBLE pairing. Worse, when they are playing poorly more of the burden falls on the Wideman Russell pairing and they are exposed. You can't really split them up because neither can play off the bottom pair. Either player is fine (barely) on the bottom pairing when with a mobile and competent partner. But they can't play together. But yes, Hiller was terrible last night as well. He is allowed a bad one once in awhile though. But it's the second of a back to back tonight. Give Ortio the start.
  11. We can debate what type of character he is on or off the ice. But none of us really knows. Burke knows him as well as any NHL executive. I am not worried the Flames are going to trade for him if he is the uncoachable player many are making him out to be.
  12. That is what people said about Carter and Richards (especially Carter). They seemed to do okay while LA won the cup twice. I am not suggesting he has the type of attitude you want to build a culture around. But Calgary has the veterans to establish a culture around. If I was Edmonton I wouldn't be interested. But as Calgary I am. To FF and JJ. I get the cap hit is high and he is a winger. He is also a point per game player and one of the best pure goal scorers in the NHL. That is worth his cap hit. He also plays a position at which we are weak both on the team and in the system. And he fills an age group that we are lacking.
  13. Absolutely. Attitude issues are almost always overblown. He is in a bad environment where he is the guy. I think he would be fine in Calgary. How many didn't want Seguin because of his attitude issues? This is the ultimate buy low scenario if they are actually moving him. He would be expensive. But I can live with that. Baertschi, our first, and Russell?

Right now he is merely decent. That is probably his ceiling. But with fewer then 100 games played I wouldn't say that with certainty. He may not be a prospect. But there is still a chance of progression. I also don't see any value in putting Ortio up early. Right now it is working in Calgary. Let it play out the season.

Goalies are voodoo. At best projecting them is like betting the horse races. At worst your playing craps. The next big thing rarely is. It's usually some guy the average fan hasn't heard of. Even established NHL goalies commonly jump between the penthouse and the dog house. I don't see any point in getting attached to a goalie prospect. I prefer a numbers game. More guys with potential = better chance at developing a stud. Ramo, Ortio, Gilles, and MacDonald are all guys in the running to be a future starter. I don't see any reason to move any of them. Not unless we can't sign Ramo to an extension.
  16. It is too bad. I was hoping he would get a game or two. My guess is either Smid is ready or they want to sit Diaz and are calling up another D prospect now that there is a spot to play in.
  17. I agree. Engelland has been much better as of late.

The great thing about being a Flames fan right now is you can enjoy both.
  19. Why? That was a disaster when they tried that. Russell Wideman has been really good.

As long as the Flames are winning games and Ramo looks good I doubt the coaches disrupt things this season. Even if we lose Ramo for nothing.
  21. I don't think you could have picked two different types or players or two different types of eras. I don't think anyone is denying that Kanzig could improve. But many, myself included, are really sceptical.

Agree with Cross. Ramo had one bad game where he came in after a long time on the bench.

I agree. He hasn't been bad the last two games. But he hasn't been magnificent either. Time for Ramo to get a game. See how he does and go from there.
