  1. I feel 2 points bad. But I also feel 5 points happy. So I am 3 points happy! I am closer to a sim then a human though. Gingers are like that.
  2. Now that I think about it your guy was Setoguchi, then my guy was Setoguchi, then your guy was Setoguchi again. Uncanny.
  3. That is Setoguchi? I thought that was some lazy guy sitting by himself trying to figure out if he has the energy to go order a drink at the bar or if he will wait another 11 minutes for the waitress to come by because he is a notoriously bad tipper. Your guess makes more sense, but you can see where I could make a mistake.
  4. There are potentially better options available to us in trade (not necessarily as part of the Wideman trade). Myers, Larrson, Schenn, etc. But I agree, unless we pick up someone else I don't expect to see Wideman moved anywhere.
  5. Brodie is either leading the Flames or tied for the lead in points, plus/minus, and ice time. He is one goal away from being the goal leader as well.
  6. JJ, as it stands right now the Flames are in a playoff hunt. I don't believe we will finish the season that way, but that wasn't the point. The team is asking for the playoffs, we are in a playoff spot, so we aren't going to start trading away assets

Hiller won the job... For now. There is no way he can sustain their numbers. Barring him having an 03/04 Kipper like run eventually he will hit a rough stretch and it will be Ramo's turn.
  8. That's why you and I don't agree on this one. His D isn't questionable. He shuts down the other teams top lines and status in the positive in terms of shots and chances. As for Wideman, we aren't trading him right now. We don't have the depth to replace him and the Flames are in the playoff hunt. That isn't to say I disagree with trading him for the right return. I personally would. But the Flames won't. Not now. Maybe near the deadline if we drop out of contention.

It's still early. But I don't even try predicting goalies. Every year the best goalies come out of no where and the can't miss guys fail to deliver. Pick them late in the draft, have a bunch in the system, and don't be afraid to trade or sign an NHL proven tender. That's my opinion.
  10. Giordano had a career season in his 30s and he is getting even better as Brodie is getting better. A lot of people give Giordano a lot of credit for Brodie play. I think it is more the other way around

I think this is less a situation of a goalie winning the number one spot. Someone will have to lose it if both keep playing well I think the rotation will and should stay.
  12. We won't see Wideman, Glencross, or any of our vets traded unless it's in a hockey trade (vet for vet). Not until we are clearly out of the playoffs.
  13. The player we want Engelland to be isn't redundant. But a physical bottom pairing D that lacks mobility is redundant. Regardless of the hand he shoots with. I agree that options weren't there. But our bottom pairing is a liability.
  14. Credit to Kent Wilson from Flamesnation for pointing this out. Giordano/Brodie = $6.2M Smid/Engelland = $6.4M https://twitter.com/Kent_Wilson/status/527112323584884736
  15. The guys is redundant. We didn't need to overpay for a physical bottom pairing D. I agree the salary isn't an issue from the perspective of our cap. But it does make the contract immovable. I don't see Smid and Engelland getting better as a pairing. Watching the two of those trying to clear the zone is painful. They keep putting the Gaudreau line out with them and they can't get anything going because they don't have a strong first pass or decent zone exit. Both of these guys need a mobile partner, but that means putting one of them on the second pair and that isn't a smart move. I think Hartley started the season with them apart because he knew they weren't a good match. But he has recognized these guys weren't able to manage the top 4 minutes and he was forced to put them together.
  16. Brodie has played at that level most of last season. Plus he has been put in circumstances that are tough to fake your way through. Young guys don't tend to flourish when thrown against the toughest competition. I think his play currently is an accurate reflection of his ability. I agree that D is our weak link though. We have zero marquee D in the system. On wing we have guys like Gaudreau, Baertschi, Poirier, etc. At C we have Monahan, Bennett, Granlund, etc. At goal we have Ortio and Gilles. The only D in our system that looks like an NHL player is Wotherspoon, and he looks like a depth guy. Our other guys have a long ways to go to show they can even play in the NHL.
  17. Russell and Wideman work together. They were good last season before injuries struck the team. They have been good this season. They complement each other really well. I agree that it is in issue that it leaves Smid and Engelland together. But that is more an issue with those two players. The second pairing was dreadful when either of those guys was on it. The Engelland contract is proving to be a huge mistake. They gave a career marginal third pairing D a 3X3 contract that they can't move. They might be able to move Smid and bring a guy like Wotherspoon up. I think Smid is a horrible partner for Engelland. I think they need to move one of those guys and pair him with a better match. Either that or bite the bullet and put Engelland into the AHL.

It might be early. But Ramo is starting where left off a season ago. He looks good.

As long as he sticks with that. The goal tending rotation early last season was difficult to explain.

Sounds like Hiller gets the start tonight. Thought they were going with a win then play model. Ramo deserves the start. Maybe they are just rotating each game. If that's the case it's fine. Hopefully this isn't like last season where the other goalie starts getting multiple starts when Ramo is earning them.

Thiesen can take on the starter role if Ortio gets called up. I think that is a big reason for the signing. To have that insurance. Hate to have bad goal tending for our AHL team given the number of kids and the strength of the roster.

I said before, my biggest concern over getting a veteran is that he automatically pushes Ramo out. This isn't a bad thing on paper as relying on just Ramo was a big risk. We will see how to goes in practice though.

I don't get too excited about goalie prospects. Half the time the obscure prospects end up the better players. As far as I am concerned Ramo, Ortio, Gilles, and guys not even on our team are all in equal running for the Flames goalie of tomorrow. I am cheering for all of them.

Ramo played very well once he established himself as the starter. This is why I don't like debating goalies with you. You have your guys, and they can do no wrong. And you have guys you don't like, and they can do no right. Goalie SV% in Bottom 5 teams teams (SV% qualifiers on NHL.com apply) Miller (.923) Ramo (.911) Enroth (.911) Thomas (.909) Nabakov (.905) Berra (.897) Poulin (.891) Dubnyk (.894) He was comparable or better (using SV%) to Quick, Fleury, Lack, Hiller, Howard, Bryzgalov, Thomas, Ward, Brodeur, etc. Now consider that Ramo wasn't given consistent starts until Nov 30. From Nov 30 until the end of the season Ramo's SV% was .919. That was over 31 games (about 75% of the season) so it isn't a small sample. Also consider that Ramo had a winning percentage on a team that finished 4th last and was significantly better than the other 3 goalies that played for the Flames. I am not completely sold on Ramo as it was one season. But he just turned 27. There is every reason the Flames should be looking for him to be an NHL starter.

Gilles had a monster start but really cooled off at the end. He wasn't good at world's. Some of that may have been injury related.
