Realistic (and unrealistic) Trades - 2024 Edition

I've posted about this before, but two years is a long time in the NHL. Look at the Flames in 2022, vs 2024.

In 2026 Vegas will look like this.

30yr old Ivan Barbashev

29yr old Jack Eichel on an expiring deal

33yr old William Karlsson

Marchessault would be 35, if they keep him, Stephenson would be 31

36yr old Pietrangelo

30yr old Theodore will be UFA

33yr old LTIR mainstay Mark Stone may not even be playing in two years

32yr old Tomas Hertl

It's not a stretch to think the bill may finally come due for VGK by 2026. That's going to be an old team and a frachise that has traded most of their high picks. I joked that it's going to lead to McKenna, but it's a prety good chance that the VGK 2026 1st is higher than the pick in 24 or 25.

Can't wait for the post-TDL "well, we heard that Player X could have been had for a nickel" or "Team A was definitely in on Player C, but the teams couldn't come to an agreement" bullpucky from the "NHL insiders" over the next few days/weeks (and the unbridled debates arguments conversations by armchair GMs that inevitably go with it)

</sarcasm>

Their D already isn't that mobile. 1 -2 years from now?

I'm not sure the bottom will drop out, but I woudln't write down a 20s pick in pen.

VGK could look pretty brutal in 2026... but there's still enough there to keep them off the bottom.  See CHI and SJS right now to see how bad a roster actually has to look to tank to #1 overall.

But still, might turn into a 13-20th overall pick.

Scorched Earth rebuild.  Doing it right.

Wish the Flames would find a way to move everyone older than 30.  Start over again.

If that is what you are looking for.. oh boy.

Sign up for ALOT of pain then.

So there it is. Flames will get an unprotected pick in 2026 now

Yeah, that piece I was hoping for in the Hanifin trade.

Oh well, Vegas is not concerned about SJS competing with them next year.

Same here but I’m hearing he’s projected as a 3rd line Ctr…that said Backlund is not going to play forever…

Depth dman. Big, physical.

Build out some depth for sure and gives them some more toughness.

Typical flames

TDL move…also, he’s young so he could be a diamond in the rough…and what’s with Conroy’s love affair with Russians lol?!

Can't say I saw this coming..

I don’t think anyone did or would have…that said he’s played well, it’s not a horrible price or cap hit, I think Ctr depth it’s a good sign

Max pain is being stuck in mediocrity and never having a real chance.

The funny thing is there are fanbases would take stuck in mediocrity over what they have.  Not saying I like the mediocrity, just never fun when the basement seems impossible to get out of either, for all the building and drafting high that Buffalo has done over the past 12 years I still don't see them maxing out as anything besides a mediocre team.
