I gotta say,

I don't think anyone on these boards has pumped Ortio more than me.

But....I still don't see him as our bonafide future.  I see it as a tie between him and Gillies.   An extremely close tie, that, if anythying, Gillies might have the edge on right now.

Gillies had a bad month.  So what.    Ortio had a rough start in the AHL a few years back.  So what.

I really think there is a tendancy here, especially within the organization, to judge young goalies by their worst games.

Judging Gillies and Ortio at their best, I think we have to call our goalie future promising, but undecided at this point.

Gotta call you out there....

You are willing to give those two goalies a pass so far, but at the same time feel that Ramo is not starter material. Both Ortio and Ramo have one current year in the NHL. Ramo is young by NHL standards, but he doesn't have any future as the Flames #1? What happens if he has a Vezina-ish season in 2014/15? Is that so far fetched? Why is it more likely that Ortio takes over in 2015/16 than Ramo being re-signed as the #1?

Don't get me wrong, we have some interesting prospects, but so far that is all they are. No point rushing them in if we have other options, or they aren't quite ready.

I don't get too excited about goalie prospects. Half the time the obscure prospects end up the better players.

As far as I am concerned Ramo, Ortio, Gilles, and guys not even on our team are all in equal running for the Flames goalie of tomorrow. I am cheering for all of them.

I love both the idea of creating competition and I think that should create an atmosphere again were the flames arent likely to get blown out in a lot of games. I think heir goaltending is good enough to keep then in it and thus competitive so win or lose they can keep battling and building the right type of attitude with this club. As it stands right now their forwards and offence are looking pretty horrific but this is a rebuild so I don't mind that but like that you compensate for that by being strong in the pipes

It all goes back to the way the Flames want to do this rebuild.....from the crease out.  In my opinion the goalie position is set for the foreseeable future.  Now its time to work on D.

That is correct.  I said we needed a real starter.  And the Flames attempted to get one in Jonas Hiller, who is effectively our starter now.

Sure, I imagine there will be much debate about this.  In fact I don't even agree with it.

But he is.

Actually, we have two starters now. BT is upping the game, trying to get both as bona fide #1's. I was preferring more of a backup, but the good ones all got signed pretty quickly. As I said elsewhere, if Hiller can go into Anaheim and win, then this is all worth it.

I duno.. dude didnt come into the league until he was 26 . wasted all his prime years in Europe.. only has a SV% of .916. I was hoping for a "real NHL Goalie" ..Everybody knows if youre not in the North American System by 22 you may as well just pack it in and go home, but I guess he'll do until we can find somebody good. :)

Well that's certainly the color of the kool-aid right now.

IMHO, two back ups don't make a starter.  And two backups definitely don't make two starters.

But it'll do for next year.

After all, it's a crucial draft year for our rebuild.  Probably the most crucial.

Um-um, good. Hiller can probably improve on the putrid goaltending we had with Berra and JoeyMac. Ramo can probably put up similar win #'s this season. I don't want to burst your Mc-bubble, but we may not be in the running this next draft. ;)

ok.. so once again the Flames have another "backup"

I'm really confused, but then I realized, there hasnt been a Goaltender you've liked yet ! outside of Ortio, who even you agree that hes still in development and needs time to grow, there hasn't been one tender in the system that I've heard you say you liked??

I'd really like to hear some names.. just who is it you would have gone out to get?

Here we go get the perfect guy.. a proven starter, consistent level of play.. able to steal games. Hes older so he has the drive to get his minutes, but he knows for now that Ramo is the guy. He will push Ramo, and be good himself.. and all see is "another backup quality goalie"

Do they have to win a cup?.. cuz theres a ton of very average goalies who have won cups  whos teams made them look good, sometimes even made them legends (Crawford,Dryden,Niemi, Osgood,Ward)

So, as you say we are in need of  a true starter, who would you go get , that would also satisfy the goal to bring a goalie up thru the system, and not bury them (eg.. a Kipper who backup means professional benchwarmer)

heck, the catch of the Day was Miller, who couldn't even get ST LOUIS thru the 1st round? some stud he is..

please tell me.. just who would be good enough?

The guy who started the last couple of season in Anaheim and pushed Giggy out of the #1 spot is not a "real NHL goalie".... ?!

Huh?

Can you reiterate? It reads like you're saying Hiller is no better than a backup?

I was staring at Anaheim's logjam at goalie this year thinking, wow, excess excess give us some.

It is still quite possible we got the best one for the immediate future.

You add in his "down year" last year was still quite respectable over 50 games, including 5 shutouts. Wipe out the true "backups" with <40 games started, Hiller is a bonafide starter in this league. The "down year", I believe, was a lot more about circumstances with the logjam, just like Burke had to unload Bryz because Hiller was requiring his seat. Wasn't long before he earned Giggy's seat.

Not thrilled with the Hiller signing. They better give Ramo a fair shot, which he didnt get last year until after the Olympics.

I agree. Hartley had a bit of a man-crush on Berra for some reason. I guess at ice-level he can see something I didn't. From on TV Ramo looked like he had better mechanics and positioning. The acrobatic saves looked good, but Berra put himself in those positions to have to make those kinds of saves...

I don't mind Hiller IF they play it out evenly. I think it could be bad development if they don't give Ramo the chance.

That's what camp is for. If Ramo outplays Hiller, he's the starter.

Not quite sure why the passion for which goalie gets the starts. Neither is a prospect.

Isn't cheering one or the other being a racialist? ;)

Ramo's the starter if he plays better than Hiller, why are we doling out the kid gloves for him?

Ramo had a good second half last year and I believe he had earned to opportunity to see if he can build on that this year and show he can be a viable option as starter going forward. But he definitely hasn't done enough to sign a career backup to keep his seat warm for when he fancies a rest. A decent goaltender always had to be a priority this summer. If Ramo plays well enough to earn a contract next year, he will be good enough to earn lots of starts. If not, we still have a goalie who we can rely on to carry the bulk of responsibility.

I guess we all underrated the goalies we had after Kipper cuz he was so good... IMHO Hiller is a good goalie IF he has his form (like the fist half of the last season)... I guess the Preseason games will decide who will start.

I feel like they are probably going to keep switching Ramo and Hiller throughout the season; it would be a shame if they just make Ramo as backup for he has a lot of potential for 1st goalie when Hiller's contract is up.

Hiller has not been quite the same since he had that bout of verdigo a year or two ago. I had it to and have never been quite the same, get car sick real easy on canyon roads. Time will tell, a good tandem in Calgary and I think it is Ramo's to loose.

From the time Burke said it , thru BT and now, one thing has remained constant. That was them stating they needed a Veteran Backup. Not a Veteran, but a veteran backup.is he there to push Ramo? You bet . If Ramo plays like a sieve will Hiller get the starts? Absolutely. But the organization seems clear that Ramo has the confidence of the team right now so im not too concerned about him being pushed out.

On the flipside, this isnt like last year.when we had 2 fresh goalies and they ran a guy who was not in the teams future (jmac). Hiller is a legitimate starter, if you dont play your level he will take your job and I for one, although I have full full faith Ramo will hold that job, will have no problem if Hiller plays more if Ramo falters. Now its a competition

On a side note gotta say was really happy to see Jmac sign in Montreal. Its a perfect place and the right situation for a quality backup like him.
