I know, it was an ironic observation. I like a short term deal under the circumstances. Good work from BT

I think Ortio believes it is time for him to play full time in the NHL. He may see that not qualifying him shows a lack of commitment that he will feel is symptomatic of his treatment last year. Being third wheel from the start and leaving it so long to play him despite abject goaltending from the other two probably demonstrated his future lies elsewhere. I don't think he signs a 2 way or anything else in Calgary. He can test his options is a few days. He might get a backup job somewhere or may end up in another league. We need to move on from Ortio if the organisation doesn't rate him highly enough to qualify him. I think BT will be looking at a young guy with potential who can learn alongside Elliott. It will be exciting to see what he comes up with...

I agree that if the Flames have no confidence in Ortio, there is no point in keeping him around and we need to bring in an alternative. I just listened to an interview from BT and he said someting luke "we will still be looking at other options. That's no disrespect the the guys we ready have, like Ortio". Burke also seemed pretty luke warm saying he had a terrible forst half but the form at the end of last year shows he could be a capable back up. Maybe they have already made up their minds.

I think you always need a contingency. But, in my opinion, he needs to be given a chance at the start of the season. Showing confidence in him could make a big difference, cos he's never really been shown that. A new coaching system may also be a benefit (although teething problems may be an issue early on). If he can't cut it given the right opportunities then we can trade for an alternative back up.

I think we should go with Ortio as backup. His NHL opportunities have been limited and in difficult situations. Had a great 5 game run then didn't get a look in for 12 months. Go with him as your backup from Day 1 and give him the opportunity to prove himself. You need to back him after the debacle last summer. He may be a genuine starter in 2-3 years or he may be a decent backup or career AHLer in 1. Time to find out...

With the Elliott acquisition there is no immediate need for another goalie, and with his cap hit we are solving another problem.

Gillies is a very good prospect. He really could be another Matt Murray. But our search for a goalie cannot be just paving the way for his inevitable ascension. There is nothing inevitable about him reaching his ceiling. This goes for the vast majority of prospects and Gillies has missed almost a year. We should be looking to find a starter long term. That may mean a short term stop gap if the solution isn't available now rather than giving up assets and salary for a lesser option long term, but it shouldn't be a stop gap for Gillies to take over the reigns. If we have a good starter long term and Gillies does develop the way we all hope, this is not a bad thing.

BT can afford to play the long(ish) game for a goalie as the market stands. If supply is greater than demand the cost will go down, not up.If he doesn't feel there is much to choose between some of the available options, aggression won't do you much good. Look at the Andersen deal! His preferred candidate may be a UFA. He may feel the expansion announcement may make more goalies available. I am glad he hasn't lunged for a deal.

Despite the posturing, I think Wideman and Matt Murray for MAF is a pretty good deal for Pittsburgh. Vasilevskiy is a very good young player coming off an ELC who should be inexpensive to resign. Tampa have no need to trade him so we would likely have to tempt them with tasty a bargain which makes it tough to come out even

I always liked Brossoit and hated the trade. He has been consistently good since we drafted him. But that boat has sailed.

He is an emergency call up. He has to go down. The decision is then whether we use one of our 3 recalls, carrying 3 goalies when we have a bare roster and 20 games to play. I think with our goalie situation, if the decision has not been made as to whether he is qualified, he should be recalled. But we will see...

Yep, my error. I misread an article about Hamilton's first start in Boston fot Calgary and thought Freddie had been recalled!

Mrazec is their number one. $1.8 would not get it done.

Wotherspoon back to Stockton. Emergency loan cancelled due to Kokipakka's arrival. We have 2 call-ups left!
-
I think Ortio is heading to Stockton. We have 20 games left with a bare roster and two recalls left. We can't carry 3 goalies under those circumstances. This was avoidable and unnecessary. When Hudler went, we were down to 12 forwards. Yet they waited til after Jones was traded to make the first recall which was past the deadline. This has hugely compromised flexibility with call ups which is crucial at this time of year in our position.

The only potential negative for me is if we have to send Ortio back down as he is on an Emergency call-up and we now have another goalie on the rosater. But I am not sure if we do. Can anybody confirm?

If you're trading from first overall, even to second, you would want more of a return than a pick in another round.

I have just noticed, Ortio is shown on Cap Friendly as Emergency Loan. DDoes this mean we have to reassign him now we have another goalie on the roster?

I am not saying their ceiling or potential is lower. I am saying that they have a lot to do before they reach their ceiling. Not everybody at their stage of developement reaches their perceived ceiling. This is not a criticism. Erixon has so far failed to get close to his perceived ceiling whilst Brodie has exceeded his. Ras and Oli have the potential to be top NHL D men but they need to develop into that.
-
They are further away in their journeys. If all goes as they and we hope, they will make it. Brodie made it. He got his chance after a more highly rated prospect went to Rangers. You wouldn't trade Brodie for Erixon now! Which is a good example of how prospects don't always progress as projected

Agreed, Ortio should definitely start. Over to you Bob....

They have less chance because they're further away. They're good prospects with great potential, but that doesn't always come to fruition. We often look at our prospects in terms of when they'll be in the NHL rather than if. If wasn't so long ago Pat Sieloff was a when rather than an if. 3 years ago, these boards were touting Sven as the Calder winner with 60 plus points. Kylington and/or Anderson may become very good players in the NHL. We will have to wait and see...
