Looking towards next season, I can't believe we resign Hiller. I don't think we can sign Ramo due to his injury and our lack of depth makes it too great a risk, especially with limited rewards. If Ortio/Poulin get resigned, I believe it will be for back-up or call-up, as Ortio has been inconsistent this year and diesn't aplear to have earned a lot of trust and he was called up before Poulin. We are at square one. Going into free agency in this situation is scary. This is why I believe Treliving will be looking into possibilities now.

I think both Ramo and Ortio are questionable. Ramo has a serious injury that generally takes about 9 months to properly heal. That takes us way past free agency and it is a big gamble. Ortio's performances have been exceptional in the last two games. By exceptional, I mean they have been an exception in terms if his performance over the course of the season. His save percentage has been below .90 in both NHL and AHL. Our goaltending situation is bad. But I agree we need to be cautious before acquiring a goalie at the deadline. I would be happy to make a move for a good young back up goalie who is ready to step up, either as backup or starter, for the right price. I just can't see a deal out there. Getting our goaltending sorted out before next season is a massive task and a huge priority...

Indeed. Let's not forget his save percentage is below .90 in both NHL and AHL this season...
  4. 30? Tell that to Toronto!

He's definitely worth a run to help decide if he's worth keeping around. Alas, Hartley is apparently undecided. "Always earned, never given" is the mantra, and Hiller has earned his spot on the bench. We have no goalies signed next season. Signing Hiller cannot be a serious consideration. Ramo will not necessarily be ready for puck drop. We need to give Ortio a good run of games and decide whether he can stick in the NHL next year. Or maybe that decision has already been made.

It could beca real good solution to upcoming cap issues. We could resigb Johnny and Mohnny for top dollar and have in inflatable 4th line. It shouldn't impact too much on performance, as long as we have a coach who knows how to pump up his players

Being inflatabble has it's own issues. I am just worried he'll let himself down
  9. Treliving on Shinkaruk; "I want to caution our fans that he's still a prospect and not there yet." Feaster would have had him pencilled onto the top line and challenging for the Rocket. It's a refreshing change and, in my opinion, a far healthier environment for players to develop and thrive.

Why would we trade for a warm body to stop playing Hiller? There is no point giving up assets for this year. The few assets we have need to be used for longer term help. We should stop playing Hiller and give Ortio a run. He might even show he's worth an extension which would at least mean we have one goalie next year

Penguins don't want to trade him and have no reason to. It would take a more enticing package than tgat to change their mind.

I don't know how Ramo will perform, but I know Hiller won't take us to the playoffs. This is the last chance for the organization to see if he can do a job. If they don't play him now, they never will, and it would not send a good message to prospective signings of young goalies.

Intersting article, RocDoc. I am worried by our future in net. I think Ortio has been wasted. We wasted the opportunity to see what we have and he will very likely leave before we find out. Every GM out there knows we are desperate for tenders which will not help with trade negotiations. We should never have started this season with two average pending UFAs. If we really are to progress, we need a long-term genuine top class number 1, and they don't grow on trees.I can see Treliving overpaying out of necessity and giving up something we really don't want to lose. I have a feeling this us going to hurt...

Ramo had a good second half last year and I believe he had earned to opportunity to see if he can build on that this year and show he can be a viable option as starter going forward. But he definitely hasn't done enough to sign a career backup to keep his seat warm for when he fancies a rest. A decent goaltender always had to be a priority this summer. If Ramo plays well enough to earn a contract next year, he will be good enough to earn lots of starts. If not, we still have a goalie who we can rely on to carry the bulk of responsibility.

Chad Johnson is the guy I'd like us to target. I know we've already publicly said that Ramo is the number one and we're looking for a back up but it would be far healthier to have another youngish goalie who can challenge for top spot. He is local and may fancy his chances of beating out Ramo so we could be in a decent negotiating position..

Not only does this give Ortio a big chance but it also gives Olivier Roy a better opportunity with the heat. Unless Ortio and Ramo are both lights out I expect to see Burke acquire goalie before next season though.

Ramo has been decent after a shaky start and has outperformed Berra. If we were to acquire another goalie he will stay and battle it out for the starter role or act as back up. We wouldn't acquire one goalie and dump two. But we should definitely be looking for opportunities for high potential young goalies to anchor this team through and hopefully beyond a rebuild.

If the deals for Dubnyk and Scrivens are anything to go by this seems to be the time to get in on the goalie market. If he can get a youngish goalie with greater potential than Ramo or Berra on those kind of terms then he does the deal, no question.

http://www.truehockey.com/articles/Lehtera-Chooses-KHL-Over-NHL-Will-Stay-in-RussiaPlus-Calgary-Signs-Goalie This link suggests it is a multi-year deal. Hopefully his strong reputation in the KHL should give both sides an out if it all goes belly up!

But we have just signed the best goalie outside the NHL. On top of that, we have the rights to the best goalie outside the NHL. Hang on a minute...

Garrioch is saying Flames are one of 6 teams asking about Bishop! After signing Berra, this could be an indication they are not confident Ramo will ever don the flaming C! Or it could be that the newshounds are getting a little 'creative' in lieu of any actual trades to report.

Could just be a creative way of getting a shot at Ekblad or Sam Reinhart!
