  1. I view it as negotiation tactics. We don't know the thought process other than we reportedly balked at the cost of the salary retention. That doesn't really sound like we had no intent to move him. That sounds like a hard bargaining strategy. I may not agree with it, but it sets expectations for the retention at least. They could climb down from it and make it happen. NJ is 5 back of Philly in the division for 3rd and 5 back of Tampa for WC. 5-4-1 in their last 10 with 3rd tier goaltending. They are on the bubble. 4 games before TDL. They play ANA on Friday. Unless traded, Markstrom is playing Saturday night 100%. If I am NJ, I am making the best pitch now so that Markstrom is available for Sunday against LA. This is their make or break week coming up. A trade before Friday gives them a good shot at 4 points on the rest of the trip. And it gives them a top goalie in 3 of 4 starts before TDL.
  2. I get that we are in a playoff race, and are battling with teams near us in points (SEA, MIN, STL) or the next tier (NAS, LA, EDM, VGK). The largest gap today is 10 points back and the closest WC spot is 5 back. With 24 games left, the highest possible total is 109. Last 10 games - 7-3-0 Previous 10 - 4-6-0 Previous 10 - 6-2-2 Last 30 games 0.600 points % If we maintained that over final 24 games that would give us 61 + 29 = 90 points. Not really a playoff team. And that is getting 14-9-1 over 34 games. Players hate to lose. They might be less willing to sacrifice if they se the GM has thrown in the towel. That also works in reverse, where players want to prove they are part of the solution. Either way, I think the GM has a duty to protect the future over short term wins. If you feel that you are getting value from trading Markstrom, consider that the summer trades doesn't get you any picks in the 2024 draft.
  3. That would be fine for NJ if they has a #2 or #3. They really don't have anything other than Vanacek. Daws etc. may be something down the road, but not now. Maybe it's too late for them to worry now, or maybe the pressure to make the playoffs is intense.
  4. Those seem sky high. I wouldn't expect more than just a 1st for Tanev. Maybe a prospect or additional pick to retain 50%. I would be over the moon if the Markstrom trade resulted in that. The trade with the Oilers is pretty funny. Maybe I don't follow the implications of the trade properly, but EDM is trading Brown, who has a bonus owing of $3.2M and SJS retaining Eberle salary, all for the low price of a 3rd.
  5. I wouldn't expect them to pull the offer. Up to a trade, the possible extension exists. Whether there is a firm offer for either player, you have to protect the asset. Not Chychrun level of protecting, but if you have no fall back plan then you do something. If you have explored signing Tanev and he is far away from a deal, you can't risk losing him UFA. If Hanifin's answer is he wants to play in the US next year and has said no to the offer, you have to trade him. There's 4 games until TDL. Sitting both for all 4 games in off the table, as they are already in for tonight. The Kipper retirement game is one that should be off the table. Even though only one player played with him. The Seattle and Tampa ones are the real decision for sitting them. I get the closeness to a WC spot is tempting. But we have to go something like 15-5-4 to reach last year's WC cutoff. Just to get in. Just my thoughts.
  6. Listening to the Big Show is annoying AF. Good thing neither of these guys are the GM. I thought EF was bad to listen to, but these guys (George & Matt) are total fools. Both think Markstrom is not getting traded. One guys thinks you play Hanifin and Tanev right up to the point of being traded. No worries about any possible injuries. Trading would signal you give up on the playoffs. The other thinks he should sit after the Kipper game. Both think they will keep going back to Hanifin to re-sign. This after many reported they had made their final offer and either knew the answer or were waiting. They called in Francis as the expert.
  7. It's a brutal injury. I'm assuming it was his leg, possibly tendons, considering the length of recovery. He had a good year last year and started this year with a bang. If he can round out his game to more defensive smarts, he could be a really good D for us in the future.
  8. I saw this pic of Stankoven and thought it was like the "it was in" goal in 2004, and how the great minds said it was paralax effect that made it look like a goal. I know Stanky is like 5'9" but that makes him look like a Hobbit. No way are those guys a foot taller. BTW, congrats on his first NHL goal and assist in his second NHL game. On his birthday.
  9. I don't know anything about the RW dude, but DeAngelo and Honka and Anderson are very unexciting returns. So, what I'm trying to figure out of this was what is Hanifin worth in this? Necas? 1st and RW dude? That makes Markstorm worth either a pile of nothing or a 1st plus nothing and taking a cap dump. I had heard that CAR was shopping Necas, but I don't know that it was real. If that is the case would they really take Hanifin back in a trade? Maybe Markstrom for Necas and some junk makes sense, but why then give up 1st and other stuff for Hanifin. I would leave Hanifin out, and only consider trading them Markstrom or Tanev, perhaps both but would have to be a more concentrated trade than that, plus no goalie coming back. Anderson has played 6 games and is on LTIR with a season remaining. Haven't liked his play in some time. Honka is in Europe if I am not mistaken. DeAngelo is a pending UFA. He was also bought out by NY because of his comments to the goalie there. This is just opinion. I have no idea of values when you combine players. I think it's been said that CGY wants to do single players at a time to get the most, like the value of a car is higer is you sell the parts.
  10. Saw this trade suggested by Rob Ellis on a rumor blog, so I have no idea how reliable the source is. He is saying the Devils are interested in Hanifin and that Hanifin is open to signing in NJ. He mentioned that they could offer: Kevin Bahl Chase Stillman 2024 1st 2025 2nd I'm not sure I love that return. Bahl may be okay but the win seems to be the picks. I haven't watched either prospect, so I have no idea.
  11. You should not be sad, because if what you predict happens, we would be top 10 for the rest of his career.
  12. I'm pretty sure you mean Montreal not Florida. That makes sense to not risk the loss of a pick outside the top 10. The simple answer for me is we are not likely a playoff team this or next year. Hording a good goalie that only has a shelf life of 2 years at a high level is dumb. Just trade him. At the lastest this summer.
  13. I think you will always have an issue with a top 10 pick's value. When we drafted Monahan, the cost to go to a 1st overall was through the roof. And that wasn't Matthews or McDavid, but it was MacKinnon Kessel was traded for a 1st in 2010 (2nd overall), a 2nd (32nd overall) in 2010 and 1st in 2011 (9th). That was a high price and it wasn't lotto protected. I think that changed how teams viewed their pics. So, I have no idea how a GM values their picks. A RHS RD that is a top pairing guy on most teams. Seth Jones went to Chicago along with Columbus' final first-round pick of Friday's draft (pick No. 32, originally belonging to Tampa Bay) and a 2022 sixth-round pick. CBJ received defenceman Adam Boqvist, Chicago's 12th overall draft pick in Friday's draft, a 2021 second-round pick (44th overall), and Chicago's 2022 first-rounder. That's a haul, but you might argue Weegar is nowhere near that player.
  14. So, let it be know to the player and agent that you will sign him as a UFA to a specific term and dollar. Say you are going to trade him to a contender that likely won't re-sign him. He gets to chase the cup for a season and knows what the receiving team has to beat to keep him past the playoffs. I wouldn't say that's against the rules. It involves trust and honor between the player and team. It's unwritten of course. By not re-signing him now, teams looking for a rental would still be interested. They have the opportunity to offer an extension. We don't lose out. That team has a chance to win the cup.
  15. Merek quoted him saying that earler in the week, so Friedman is just repeating himself. National audience, so I get why he said it again. He did say it slightly differently, though. He said he understood the deal with NJ didn't break down over retaining salary. It broke down becuase the price for that was not being met. Thinks they will circle around on it again.
  16. Yeah I was looking at his bonus conditions. Play the 10th game. That is all.
  17. From what I understand, Markstrom is 0-7 against the Oilers since that playoffs.
  18. I'm sure they would rather be battling for a playoff spot with the possibility of a few players coming back near the season end, or barring that, when the playoffs started. The cost is going to be as high this summer for a goalie like Markstrom, and maybe the price heats up because of it. And they have one season less to work with. Markstrom is playing great this year. With a healthy defense next season, he could be as good or better. They are going exactly nowhere with the goalies they have. Almost 2 months to go on a decent run and get a decent seeding.
  19. I think we need to get out in front of the TDL with any trades. Teams will start dumping players as we get close. Maybe we hold one back to get the best last minute return, but that's risky. ARI is gonna start dumping soon. Probably teams like CBJ and SJS will as well. ANA could be looking to move Gibson.
  20. Maybe he fits the culture on the Oilers. I'm sure they could welcome him there.
  21. I don't even think it matters that we trade Hanifin and Tanev. Marky leads the NHL in high danger chances. We will see a lot of goals against without him. With him, we lose scoring from Hanifin and PK from Tanev. That means less wins. No point in keeping Markstrom just for sake of a 12 pick vs a 5 pick.
  22. What would you say if Kylington was wrapped up in that kind of thing, but sought out help to get out of it? For now, we know nothing about it. I neither excuse nor condemn Ruzicka's actions. I do think it leads to questions about his mental health. Tony Montana was a pychopath with deep seated rage issues. Is that the same thing? Weird conversation. I am sorry for your loss.
  23. Since you have no idea what others that have entered the NHL Player Assistance program were doing prior, you have no way of knowing this isn't the same thing. Did he get addicted to Oxy when he had the injury in the fall? Anyway, I don't like to watch car crashes, so I won't bother with this story. Too bad. He seemed like an okay kid prior to playing down the lineup under Sutter. Was always question about consistency, not anything else.
  24. I don't know if this was an issue prior to his injury in NYC, but the guys seems to have lost it since then. Post injury he was never the same. Hope he gets help with his mental health struggles.
  25. I'm not really getting the reasons to have half a NHL performing team and what some say is a star goalie. The two ideas don't mix. We have to fix the future goalie situation in 3 years or less. We don't have a playoff team constructed for this year, and really no plan to be one next year. What is the value in keeping a goalie that gets you close but the team overall isn't good enough? Times have changed. The idea that a 36 year old Miller or a 39 year old MAF is getting you a cup is pretty much flawed. They are supposed to be stopgaps to allow a good team to develop their new starter. We haven't used this year to even evaluate Wolf or Vladar. I don't think Vladar is the answer based on his uneven play. In the same game he can be a star and look like an AHL goalie. Plays one game well then the next looks like crap. He doesn't look even as ready as Rittich did as a 1b here. So the argument is really what are we trying to achieve and when does it make sense to trade him. The summer brings in more teams that might make a trade, but also has goalies as UFA's available to teams that don't want to make trades. The alternate reality is that only some teams will make offers now. But those teams are in a bind. Lacking a #1 and have seen their season teeter towards missing the playoffs. Or their depth consists of a rookie or meh goalie. What are we trying to achieve? A worse rank in the draft with no hope of a cup? Playing for pride? Depend on a goalie to fix mistakes by the other players? Short term wins? I would be happy that we make a move now. We get to figure out what our glaring needs are, whether that is on defense, lacking a #1C that plays both ends, not having goalie depth? We can pick up a goalie in the summer that would last as long as Markstrom's contract. Might provide us with a bit more time to find the next one. Allow us some time to build the prospect pool that was ravaged.
