  1. I doubt we do Ras as well. The thing is we traded Lindholm, so the present group wasn't going to last. Tanev is getting a bit old for the team at this stage. You want a re-tool or rebuild, you need to burn it out. There are a couple of guys that have said there are players that just don't do what needs to be done. I think we have to root out the old culture guys. Can't say who still fits that, but we only have 4 guys in the top 9 that we had last year. The D has 4.
  2. But why would they need Tanev? They have cap. A rental? I suppose. I think the ask is higher than a 2nd plus a prospect unless we are talking A prospect.
  3. I think Vanacek could be good here. Having a bit of an off season. Young and a Czech. Fit in with Vladar. Pick the better of the 2 and run Wolf the end of the season and next year. If you do it now, you may be able to trade Vladar or Vanacek by TDL. Or in the summer when teams are looking to change.
  4. And we have an old G and an old D that work together. We have a young G and some young D (on the farm + Kylington). And a few young G developing elsewhere. We are on the road to turfing our starter. That's fine. We would need to at some point anyway. We may still end up building out from the G, but we have already begun on the D.
  5. So, what happened here?
  6. I don't think Tanev helps them. The retention is more about next year. Dougie out allows them to take on Markstrom with zero issues. I like you suggestions though to get a better return. But overall, I think we can deal Marky by himself. Tanev should be worth a 1st as well as Hanifin. Not just a 1st, but can't be greeedy. If BT was here, would we see the same team? Would we have Sharky and Kuz, or some 30 year old? Would he be trying to add at TDL?
  7. If they are not looking at him, they should be. I don't know if he is really top C ceiling or not but sometimes ya gotta take chances. Assume you think Hanifin for him ++. The + could be Englund and/or a good pick. Steep price to pay, but I think teams will try to make this level of offer.
  8. The timing may have to do with that, but also Markstrom playing at home for what could be his last game here. Makes sense on both accounts. I think NJ would prefer to have the guy that practiced outside playing in this game. Also, whatever is coming back is able to help them in the stadium game. I got the sense that they were working the phones after coming so close to making the deal. It's a big ask to have a team retain salary on a big contract for near 3 years.
  9. Korky seems to be a solid player, while Pachal was a freebie they let go for nothing. I don't want to become Vegas, but they are one of the hardest hitting bunch of D. They can get away with Marshmallow and some smaller players on F. I find we have gotten a little soft. Hanifin is not tough. Ras is only as big as he is, and loses battles against big players. Weegar is one of the few guys that plays bigger than his size. Kylington is tougher than Hanifin but isn't super aggressive. Tanev is like a good natured Gio. We need to be a little meaner. I think we absolutelyt need to be target C's from our D trades. Or through a G trade. We still have Kuz and Solo, in case we want to give solid D a chance. Not adjusted to the NHL game, but they are at least solid hitters. If we were to offer up Marky, Hanifin, Tanev, even Mangiapane it would help a lot. Maybe then we then have 4 NHL lines and 3 pairs. And a semi-replacement goalie. Maybe then we don't have to use Sharky as a C and lose his scoring. Maybe then the 3rd line can get back to scoring. Maybe then we aren't serving up pizza to the other team in our zone.
  10. Are we up or down? The three best goalies IMHO are Helly, Shesty, and Vasy. Not this year, just in general. Each one of them 30/31, 28 and 29/30. Only Shesty has a short career in NA so far. The rest are already 9+ years in. Helly is signed for another 7 years. My point is we don't need one of them, we need the next thing. We have a couple guys that could make the jump at the same time we get good. Or we sell a F for a good up and comer. Just saying that the sequence isn't always build from the net out. The tendency is to get a solid guy that can give you 3 years. That's building from the net out, but not a great idea. Having a stable of goalies that might not be ready while you plan the D may not work either. Mind the G, build the D, find the F.
  11. The only thing that cause me pause about Edstrom is the transfer issue with the Swedish league. Does he not have to play for a certain length of time there? Not sure. The number seem good for the SHL at that age. Maybe really good. Vegas D castaways are better than some guys we wasted contracts on. I have no interest in seeing Oesterle play again here. I only like Gilbert because he's the last fighter we have. We could do worse by trading with Vegas. If we traded Tanev elsewhere, we would need a RD and a LD.
  12. I don't think trading Markstrom is even the end of the world if Wolf's game isn't quite NHL yet. We barely had game last night against the 2nd last team in the league on a B2B with travel. Wolf was shakey after a couple bad giveaway goals. We did nothing to score to turn the tide. Whether Vladar is any good or not, same issues. And as good as Markstrom has been, he only wins with 3 or less GA. We score so little that we need goalies to be perfect. I would wrather not be perfect and look for the eventual replacement for Marky. Now, but internal replacement, now by a okay goalie coming back that we can work with. In the future by building the team from the D out, and perhaps making a trade for a younger guy? Having Markstrom at the top of his game now, and the team re-tooling, makes no sense. BY the time this team is relevant again, he would be retiring. And maybe we haven't even given Wolf enough starts to be ready then.
  13. I was a little miffed that they put Wolf in front of the camera post game. He was visibly shaken and basically said that he can't do certain thing in the NHL. Regardless of the emergency recall and subsequent sending down once Vladar came back, Wolf comes off a bad game and gets sent down. If we are trading Marky, then yes we need a goalie back. We have to be careful with Wolf. Winning is not the only thing when you are below the playoff cut line. You have to continue development. Maybe get him a string of games and live with the results. We will never know otherwise.
  14. We play like crap with scouts in the building. Hanifin and Tanev not exactly sharp. Markstrom not playing. Let the selling begin. Too many teams better than us now.
  15. Well call that an extreme fail. Picked the guy that played with Seth Jones. We seem to have issues in the 2nd round: McDonald (Demko) Wotherspoon, Granlund (Kucherov) Kuznetsov (nobody to date) Parsons (no real standouts) Hunter SMith (Montour, Dvorak)
  16. Scouts are making their plans before they hear the starter. We play Saturday early, so any scout could stay for an extra day and get back Sat.
  17. That helped 2 teams win cups, did it not? Took awhile for Dallas to win it, but then again we traded him to STL.
  18. As the only player that is elite? Not unless you have high level players on their game. Perhaps our best team was the one that lost to COL in round one. 2nd best lost to EDM. Coaching and player letdowns led to both of those exits. Who is to say what the results would have been with a win in either series. A retool comes in several forms. Trade for picks and young prospects; crap shoot on selections and development. Trade for players and picks and prospect, well you are re-tooling the current team as well. You may not see the results right away and you may not see them work. It depends if you trade a Tkachuk for a Necas. Or a Erat for a Forsberg.
  19. I don't think we claim him. He chose to sign in WAS. Sets a bad example when we are not willing to ply our newly signed RW. When Coronato is ready, he will easily pass what Phillips could do. I was more ticked at the treatment when he belonged to us. We moved on, as did he. He will get back to the big team when he is ready or needed.
  20. Small update. It looks like Vladar is not able to come off IR yet. Wolf is the starter and Markstrom backing him up.
  21. So, just to add fuel to the fire.... Markstrom not on the ice today (optional skate for him). Wolf in starter net and Vladar backing up. Wolf was on an emergency recall due to Vladar being on IR. So far Vladar still showing on IR. But if he's on the ice?
  22. Interesting trade fodder. I've seen worse. Marner has 1.3 years left on his contract and goes UFA last making $10.6M on the cap. Bert is 28 and a UFA this summer, where he took the deal in TO to set up for next deal. I can't really tell if the three new players make us better. Re-signing for all three players: 2024 - Bert $5-7M depending on term. 2024 - Liljegren $2M ? 2025 - Marner $12M ? That's a lot of cap for just 2 players not referred to as the best in the league.
  23. Well not in all cases will we get roster players like Kuz coming back. We will likely be trading 2 D in the next couple of weeks. You can't really trade a Tanev for a yonger Tanev. You can perhaps trade a D for a C or a winger. Maybe at Zary stage if you are lucky. I doubt we see anyone coming back older than 25, unless it's a cap dump. In which case we get an asset for taking it.
  24. It doesn't matter how we view the player as it does how NJ views him. 1st year in the NHL 17 goals, 2nd 27 goals, 3rd 15 so far. RHS C that can play the wing. Zary may be close to him in numbers, but they are the same age; one in his 3rd NHL season.
  25. I probably scoffed a bit too much at the burn it down crowd, but the season has turned out to support the fact we are farther from being a contender than a basement dweller. Two years in a row that we are trending in the wrong direction. Marky has a good season and we are points out of a WC spot. Marky had a lesser season and we were points out of a WC spot. If the point is to get better, and we have already traded our "top" C, then we have to go deeper than just a Tanev or Hanifin. Huberdeau and Kadri will need to remain at a high level to bring along the kids and new prospects. Whether we just go with Wolf and Vladar or pick up a more likely starter, we have to seriously consider trading Markstrom. I don't know how much of his struggles are with the team in front or his usage or how he plays the puck. I think he will last his contract, but then what. By 2026, will he be that relevant? I believe it's a matter of time before 2-3 players are traded. It would be safer to trade Tanev now, but the offers may not be there yet. Not much time for teams to deal, so they need to up their offers or risk losing out. On our side, they also need to be careful they don't overplay him or wait too long. Game of chicken. Hanifin is in a weird space. Like Lindholm, they know that he is wanting out (if he isn't signing). But you can't lowball a 2/3 D-man.
