  1. I can see that... is it worth it to trade sideways to get someone more defensively aware, all-round?
  2. Our D could be the best offensive minded D in the league if it was utilized to its extent. But our D has always been brain-fart specialists. I don’t know if that’s systems or our personnel? We aren’t tough enough defensively. Finally I see Hamonic making guys pay for the extra shot/stickwork on our goalies... but still, there’s something about our coverage...

Its a known fact that the chances of being a contender these days is by building your team through the draft rather than free agency and trading away futures. Sure we don’t know what the players will be like, but it still cost a lot to get Player’s we weren’t able to develop ourselves. So it’s still a question of our development system? Drafting? When teams like St. Louis are able to cycle through Player’s and stay competitive and Stanley cup threats? I think JJ has a bit of a point, but so do you. It’s tough when we are chasing our own tails, so we have to go outside... i feel like we’ve been JUST mediocre so far. Why is it that a team can’t play better and more sound when they don’t have confidence in the goalie? Why do they forget how to play the game when they have no confidence in someone? Ive only ever played beer league... so I just know I try be more structured in my own game when we get a sub goalie who looks shaky.
  4. They can sign him and trade him in a year or two after. There is absolutely no succession plan as Bennett, Jankowski and Lazar are not going to replace Backlund (hopefully yet). If the Flames think they can compete for cups, that’s not happening without Backs at the moment... BT has the Flames “all-in” with this group so-to-speak. Unless Bennett has a breakthrough, he has to re-sign Backlund.

Right now we stand about 18th in Goals Against Average, and that's where we are in the standings. That's not on Smith as much as it is on the team. Smith has a high SV%, so there ya go. But we are tied for 18th in league standings. It's early, but the Canucks are in the third spot in the Division.

I am saying a kid at other positions to push us over the top. We gave up how many picks for goalies and D? Ive been pushing for Hamonic, and now like Hamilton enough... just saying i can see where JJ is coming from. i think we could've tanked better and went for a Matthews? But we have to work with some good players, just not elite...

I feel like JJ is saying we paid a steep price for goalies and are not getting a go at drafting a kid who could push us over the top. We have an offensive minded D, but are showing that we could be better defensively, plus we also need to keep stocking the cupboards of fresh young talent who can possibly turn elite. I like what I've seen of Smith, we should've went for him a few years ago. Our next wave wave of youth is close, but not really busting out. I dont think our goalies are a sure thing either.

I played Ted on a hockey team where the goalie was passionate, yelling compliments and letting us know we boardinged up. It didn't change how I viewed him. I respected it.
  9. I think I am 50/50 in what I saw. The team had good possession stats but I felt like threats weren't too high. But defensively I remember brain farts once in awhile that cost us. Hoping another year of experience helps us. The thing that I think killed us were the mental mistakes. Hopefully the possession stats lead to better, more fruitful scoring chances.

Like you said, the best of the best... look at Carey Price. Everyone in Montreal wanted his head when he had bad games, and they wanted Halak over him. Early in his career it didn't look good. But luckily the fans weren't the GM and he didn't get traded. Where would they be now? Bottom feeders. let Gillies develop. Over-developing isn't a terrible thing. It is when you dick someone around and not play them properly. He still has to prove it.
  11. Building the arena will bring in new jobs for how many years? Where will they shop and buy things? Who else benefits?
  12. Do you think the cost of materials are different? Labour? Detroit's economy is down, but the cost is a bit lower, no? Alrhough, I guess that means $450,000,000 goes further?
  13. For the forward group, it looks like we will have close to elite top 3 on our team. Gaudreau, Monahan and Tkachuk. That is not saying they play together, but it could be an option. Tkachuk could be the player that makes space for them, and might bring them into the grit like he did with Backlund and Frolik; which is why I am hesitant to break up the Backlund, Frolik, Tkachuk line.

Isn't it too early to be negotiating term? I thought it was just talking time?

I remember that too! i listen to both the Fan and 1040 here in Van and I wasn't sure if it was here in Vancouver or on the Fan. Was it Noodles? Hirsch? Or the goalie that got injured and had to retire, Brent Krahn?

Wasn't Carolina terrible last year? At times at least? I still think we can tend to blame goalies for their teams' inadequacies. It's gotta be on both.

I agree and he is almost like a sideways move, from Chad Johnson, someone who can back up but give you some extra starts if needed.
  19. What round would that equate to? We had no 2nd or 3rd this year. Is it like a round 1, 2 or 3 next year? Does this make up for any of the picks we just traded?

To me it sounds like an excuse on Elliott's part. I get it, you need to communicate. But that doesn't account for being cold and not being able to make a routine save, which, if your team is dominating, you better be able to do.

Which is such a catch-22, because they'll speed up a rebuild to be ok with "just making the playoff." i agree that they are a very moral team, to a fault sometimes, probably.

420, i agree, but the price was a bit higher than it would've been to re-sign smith. We added Hickey to the price. For me, it's too much when you account for what we paid last year as well. i am ok with Smith, but it is the accumulation of both deals, everything we've paid for when we could've done these deals for more return in a Talbot, maybe an Anderson?

I would've been ok with this deal a year ago. But it's the accumulative costs that are adding up.

Plus whatever we could've gotten in a Hickey trade. Maybe not much, but that's what, another 3rd rounder? All currency we could've used on a better longer term fix.

I am tired of spending assets on short term fixes. In an era when picks are currency, we spend freely on these goalies who last a season or two. Elliott and now Smith... I'd have preferred to trade them for possibly longer term goalies.
