I am cranky, yes, to put it mildly.   I am making a conscious effort not to post too much or get overly involved, so as not to come across the wrong way.   I'm at that point.

I don't see any solution outside of firing Brad Treliving and possibly hoping for new ownership.

So, I will spare you all an elaboration.

Eventually, I will get my wish.  And I'll be back with a better attitude at that time.

    Breath, buddy.

We all wonder the same things.

Step back from the ledge. We get it.

For me, do players just play dumb hockey in Calgary, is it the altitude? WTF?

Outside of that, we're pretty much on par.

Outside of your extremist element, lol.

You don't strike me as an, "instant result" fan.

    Then their you are, lol.

It wouldn't matter if we got him, our biggest problem is how we manage goalies.

Had we acquired MAH we would have played him 70 games and he would have tailed off the same way Smith did.

(that said, BT's comment that we "have the right personnel" is still a shockingly blinded denial of reallity)

Even by your standards, you are not particularly happy!

What would you do to change the team around?

I don't have a problem at G, as long as Smith is reined in.

At D, I'm putting Brodie back on Gio's right. That was never broken but we fixed it (real good).

Too many RSD, I'd be looking what I can get for Hamilton. 2 top 6 RS and a left D would do it for me.

We wouldn't have to rely on Hamilton's timely scoring if we were better up front.

Most of all, we are totally a one trick pony with Gaudreau and zone entries. Every team knows it, so it's obvious JG is going to have a lot of turnovers.

For all we get pissed at his turnovers, it's coaching's fault, not his. That is one of the biggest things that needs to change imho.

I knew this offseason was going to be a very difficult one. Hopefully mgmt knows this is more than a couple tweaks.

Hamilton, Ferland, likely Rittich(package) are key guys I'd move.

Not because I don't like having them, but we have to figure out how to get better.

I just don't think Brodie and Bennett scapegoated gets us the type of returns we need.

Saga continues to be ridiuclous but at least there is hope they can get back to the table.

Unless i've read otherwise I beleive part of the motion is that Nenshi is now long allowed to be invovled, which is smart. Try and get rid of/reduce, some of the egos involved here.

    It's headshaking.

Go look at the airport area. It can't be worse than that dive known as the Stampede Grounds. Edge of town sure, start fresh. The airport upgrades include fantastic roadworks.

Easy in, easy out. Wanna get impaired, lots of hotels. Not a flood plain. Come from any direction, good infrastructure.

I think he started away from Kane, but impressed.

3rd line I could deal with.  4th line, not so much.

I know for sure he was 1st line with Toews for a while, I'm just unclear on the bulk of his season.

Mangiapane's usage was retarded, he created a few chances right away, but you've got him with low talent anchors.

The terrible part of that is you put such low expectations on him, for him it's gotta look like little faith and he'll get little chance.

    Which is what it was.

That's the big thing isn't it.  Breadeater was played in exactly the wrong role in CGY.  He was a leading AHL scorer playing on top lines.  Why would we consider even using him on the 4th line playing 8 minutes?  Perhaps a simple answer is a line of Mangiapane-Janko-Bennett.  Shelter them a little.  We can still upgrade a RW on Backlund's or Monahan's line.

It's funny you mentioned DeBrincat.  I was hoping he would be on the board for us in the 2nd round.

Up till we traded with STL for Elliott.  I hadn't heard anything about Kyrou, but probably still would have picked DeBrincat knowing what I know today.

I might be wrong, but I believe DeBrincat spent a lot of time on the Kane-Schmaltz line.

    Their coach is Quenneville.

Calgary has a long history of making guys learn the bottom 6 first, I really hope we get away from that.

I would say give Lazar first chance at the 3rd line RW and if it isn't working we have Foo, Gawdin and maybe a few others.

Should the speculation of Derek Ryan happen we could have a 4th line of Klimchuk, Ryan and Shore possibly with others as well. Depth is building finally.

We need to decide on Eatbread likely before anyone you've mentioned. You just have to look at DeBrincat and see how he was able to transition his game, because for all those jr points, I saw an NHL-long shot. I see Mangiapane in a similar way, and Peters sounds like he likes to put young guys in roles they were acquired for.

Mangia doesn't really have much to prove in the A any longer, does he?

  7. 3 minutes ago, redfire11 said:

Watching Lazar play I really like his effort and you see flashes of higher skill. But it just hasn't translated effectively on the ice. With a new coach and some consistent line mates he could realistically be our 2nd or 3rd line RW that we talk so much about trading Brodie for.

That would be nice. Perhaps it's just a case of him needing to find some swagger, the hard work is there, but the skillset doesn't seem to be.

I think BT with this offseason is only limited to his own imagination. We have assembled some good to great players, now is the time to compliment them and get the best out of them. I know we all have a tendency to get trade happy with the idea of getting rid of what players we think are no longer a fit here. Undoubtedly you have to weed the garden however one has to ask what ingredients are missing in order for us to have a winning team.

One think I noticed from comments made was surrounding Leadership and Emotional Investment from the players as a whole but Tkachuk appeared to escape this criticism. He should get an A or even a C as one of the team Leaders was mentioned and I say we shouldn't put that on him just yet. This is where I think going all out for at least one proven winner such as Tavares or Neal will be money spent wisely.

MAC, do you work for the Flames? Wtf is this hodgepodge?

One think I noticed is the master plan is to get Tavares or Neal?

    That isn't a plan, it's a prayer.

If that's what you'd do, look at backend years on Gio, Tavares, Neal on deals you'd have to ink.

Not into that at all, get ahead of the game, don't be the golden years contracts team.

Avoid it like the plague. Too many good, young players. Go that way.

Where did you put him up on RW ? LOL

Didn't trade him, just his position lol.

In my mind, I had three options

    1. This a terrible idea

    2. This is a bad idea

    3. This is, well, an idea lol

It's a slow time for a Flames/Wings fan, tired of redundancy, lol. Didn't someone actually discuss moving Mony to wing?

Too many RD, not enough RS RW, especially that like to shoot and have long sticks.

  10. Just to add. The last thing I want is a coach telling me "we did a lot of good things" in a loss.

Just the way I view it (I played net), that would be the ultimate insult.

"We lost, don't tell me we played well".

Any goalie or guy with a letter should be able to tell you that.

When it starts at the coach, it becomes difficult to be honest.

So you get everyone parroting, "well we did a lot of good things".

I think we need a coupla Russians, because they accidentally tell the truth.

Imagine Smith, "well I faced 48 shots and we lost 2-1" being honest about that?

"well my coach just said we played a good game overall, so I guess I'll be needing 40-odd shutouts this year".

That would be my parting shot to GG, "stop being everyone's buddy, a loss is a loss."

If you're going to pull the positives from a loss, use your inside voice, pack it away until tomorrow.

Don't spill your guts, for godsakes.

Everyone isn't your buddy, put your thick skin on and get pissed.

I think GG will be fine, he'll learn, unfortunately, he has to spare his players no quarter.

At this level, there isn't a single player that hasn't been ripped on hard along the way.

    Kinda the way it works.

Your feeling has been hurt long before this, lol.

    Demand more.

GG needs to find his aggression gene, he's going to need it.

  11. I can't help but think Peters was BT's first choice off the hop. He became available, BT acted quickly.

Peters has quite the task now in visiting the roster and what he needs to help him coach. He could even change the dynamics, it's hard to say.

But I'm guessing that he's going to have a lot of say in what he'd like to see.

Honestly can't hurt to put a fresh set of eyes on our roster and where we need to go.

If Peters can bring a lot of backbone to make tough decisions, it'll be a win.

  12. I'm in complete agreement with cross.

Would I have liked to be able to have watched prospects in the playoffs?, most definitely.

I'm disappointed that I can't. But it's more precisely a development league. The +26 yo's, the Calder Cup is their chalice because they likely aren't going to be playing for a Stanley.

For the younger guys, it may even be better that they get their month off early and get busy in the gym and working on their strength and conditioning.

I watch the CHL much the same way. I have my team, just got beat out, but I don't get too down about it. It's 16-20 year old's so I treat it for what it is. It's loaded with mistakes but you have to expect that and not get too worried about it, they're just kids. Every team has great ones so I don't have much room for hate, outside of London, but that's jealousy, lol.

I'm sure every player has had playoff runs/international tourneys prior to turning pro and understand what pressure's all about. Same with the NHL, you'll hear, "playoff experience", but let's face it, everyone has it, just at different levels. But they were no less important to that player at that time.

I wonder if it's just a lack of talent around him.  Never had a true #1 Center to play with.

Another thing is, he was able to push guys around in Juniors.  At the NHL level, guys are too big for him to push around consistently.  I also wonder how many times he's been challenged to fight just becauseof his dad.  Must be annoying.

The difference between Domi and Bennett is that Bennett is great without the puck.  Domi floats around.

That's a part of scouting I'll never understand is over-estimating wingers with good centers on great teams. Domi's C was Bo Horvat in London and the ice was always tilted.

Good numbers are easy when you don't have to play much D. This is why I have a slanted view of Raddysh. He went from Dylan Strome to Boris Katchouk. The points come easy with players like that.

Bennett is being Bennett. He put up solid numbers in his draft year, not incredible numbers, but didn't have much around him.

I think his biggest issue is the fans. Let him develop without the hairy eyeball of expectation. His body language, imo, is defeat too often.

Mony's a 6 pick, Bennett a 4, to expect that means he's better than Mony isn't the case. I'm sure at least half the fans thought, "great, Bennett at 1C, Mony at 2".

That was never going to be the case. If drafted in the same year, you don't take Bennett before Mony.

In shot release alone, Monahan is a world apart from Bennett, always has been, and scoring goals is the name of the game. It's how you shoot, not how hard. Bennett always pulls it back and zips it. World class goalies get most of those.

We gifted Bennett the 3C and have done nothing but complain since. His confidence is eroded, the team needs to take a step back and work with what he can become, not what they expect him to be.

Just my 2 cents. At $2mil for another year, it would be silly to cut bait.

In my opinion watching Harmonic every game he is our best defense man behind Gio. I would like to see a d pairing of

    Gio/Harmonic

    Brodie/Hamilton

The problem is the 2nd pair, who will save them from themselves?

We saw it last night, Gio leads the rush in deep, Hamilton decides that's a good time to pinch.

Getting an experienced goalie won't cost much at all. What did Mrazek cost the Flyers? A 4th? We could probably get Lehner for something similar.

This is why you have developing guys. What kind of message are you sending with, "our goalie's hurt, we're in the market".

I think it's silly. Ride the farm like rented mules, it's why it's there.

Are you going to "ruin development" on Rittich and Gillies, or feed the hunger?

    I'd guess the latter...

Exit strategy?  Toronto purchased him for $50 million.  If Detroit would have been even close he’d still be there.   Datsyuk had a great career, he turns 40 this summer, how long did you want to keep him for?

    Longer than Babcock...

  16. 12 minutes ago, Flyerfan52 said:

That was a very odd trade with so many conditions attached. That 4th could rise to a 2nd.

There was also a conditional 3rd based on the Flyers re-signing Mrazek.

I wouldn't be surprised to see conditions like that attached by teams trading for other rentals soon. If the player produces the return goes up.

If I read that correctly, it could top out as a 2nd this year and 3rd next year.

    I'm a big Wings fan.

This downturn isn't from losing Babcock, it's from losing Datsyuk.

Babcock just plays his exit strategy. He's a piece of work.

Regarding Mrazek, he was a lights out goalie in the A, and great on the Wings...until Datsyuk left.

I'm glad he gets around Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds et. al. now.

    Hope he picks it up.

Detroit has some nice young pieces, but they've got some work to do.

I have to laugh at the talking heads really honed in on losing Babcock....No, full-tards, we lost Datsyuk.

Rittich anticipates well enough and flows with the play. He gets beat because the shots were just too good for his skill or his Dman didn't help with rebounds and that's forgivable because that's hockey.

Gillies though, he doesn't flow with the play.  Like he only cares where the puck currently is and there's no ability to read what's coming ahead of time.  You are so right he doesn't seem to know where he is on the ice. And/or there's evidence to suggest he only understands stopping the puck as a basic function of goaltending but doesn't understand his teammates responsibility in helping stop the puck as well, like for example, where is his Centerman when the puck is along the side boards for example.  This is evident because he just plays the shot without understanding space and time.  He doesn't understand his teammates have helped cut down space and time and he can come out to challenge.  He doesn't work with his D.  He has tunnel vision.

Anticipating also gets goalies in trouble too though. You zone in on the puck carrier and the rest is peripheral vision to note a white shirt vs a red shirt.

Again, with Rittich, I think he's better than even Smith at this.

It's only 6' post to post, maybe 10 if you're at the top of the crease.

Rittich has made some huge saves coming across his crease.

There's only 6' there, know your laterals from post to post and know where to end your slide, he's good and fast at that.

I just don't see a downside with his mechanics.

    JG goes short-side, constant.

There's a reason. If a goalie pulls off of the post early, that's what every sniper looks for, especially a new goalie.

I've counted 1 against Rittich and about 10 posts/crossbars. Perfect shot, not enough space.

Rittich has a ton of great qualities to me, he has an almost adroit foundation as a goalie. He does all of the science better than most, imho.

  18. 17 minutes ago, The_People1 said:

Despite the win, I thought Gillies looked horrible in the Coyotes game.  His fundamentals are so bad.  The puck is not doing much along the side boards and he drops to his knees after a mild screen.  The puck is not even doing anything. And worse is he's frozen there watching the puck the rest of the time.

He generally likes to play goal from his knees and doesn't flow with the play.  Very Jonas Hiller like except Gillies doesn't come out to challenge shooters at all and stays static once set.  In comparison, Rittich would charge out to cut down angles which is what you want to see.  You want to see a goalie understand his D have the other guys covered and he can push out from the blue paint to cut down the shooters time and space.

His hockey sense and ability to anticipate, which is what separates the great goalies from the good, is so below average.

Gillies is still so unbelievably raw. He has the ideal size and butterflies very well but it's all looks and no substance.  He just doesn't get it.

Gillies is like a lot of big goalies, they play from there knees too much. Bad bounce on the 1st goal, but he was sliding to his left and got caught over-committing to the shot. That's a no-no for a shot from that far out, it can hit 4 different things on it's way to you so you can't slide to the shot direction. You have be in a position to protect the entire net.

The only thing I see is that you can't lose where your net is when you're in the blue paint. Angle drills are drilled into goalies when they're young. If they aren't, you miss the biggest component of goaltending. There is a goalie that I think is fantastic that gets by without being great at it is Luongo. I used to laugh at the look on his face would be like, "how did I get here?" when he'd let in a wrister due to cutting the angle down but being 2 feet off the right angle.

Every goalie in the NHL should be able to skate backwards, without looking back, and land on a dime anywhere in the blue paint. If you're out of the blue paint, there are countless markers, blue line, red line, hash marks, faceoff dot, team door. You skate those lines backwards, no look, constantly in practice, land at the left post, right post, mid-net, top of the crease. That is Bantam hockey, most important part of goalie, you can look past the puck between markers and know exactly where the net is behind you. It becomes 2nd nature. You also practice with parked pucks, "it's here, where are you"? I see net right there, as the puck whistles past you and in.

I spent 2 years on team and summer camp when I decided to trade in my stick for a goalie stick on these drills.

Not sure why Gillies doesn't seem to have that vs Rittich being great at it. Rittich is not this ethereal athletic specimen, his fundies make him a stalwart goalie, though.

I've been a bigger fan of Rittich vs Gillies for well over a year now for most of the reasons you've stated.

Rittich is pretty much an ideal backup, imho. You always know what you're going to get with him. He has a great foundation, as a goalie coach, I would just keep strengthening what he already knows, don't change a thing. He's a good counter-balance to Smith's near Hasek-like in scrambles. A science goalie vs a reactive goalie sounds like a perfect combo to me.

One total BTC. When the puck goes in and the goalie is sideways to his net, I go mental, lol. Were you hoping to butterfly the pass across your crease?

Yes Mr. Smith, I mean you.

That is True but Most of the time if the player wants to play and he is a Good player such as smith is he is gonna play if he is playing good now if he is playing like crap then that is were the Coach decision in lineup comes in cause if a player is Playing Great doesnt matter what coach you are you Remove a Goalie usually the player isnt happy unless it is a Back to Back

That's why coaching has to keep vet goalies in check.

You have to manage them, because they always say yes.

Smith has actually been our crutch, easily our MVP.

All teams get injuries, we'll be okay.
