The notion was that they tried to change Lack's game from where his strengths were.  We shall see

What an oddity that is too. You're supposed to scout goalies and list the qualities that are important to you. Not sign a guy and try to turn him into something different than you scouted.

But by all accounts, that's what they did.

That would be like telling Ramo to stay deep in his crease:lol: and then wonder why his GAA explodes and SV% plummet and then blame him for it.

I find it insulting that Ken King thinks people are stupid enough to believe that the ticket surcharge would/should be Flames revenue.  That is like complaining that:

    1. GST charged on tickets should be considered Flames revenue.

    2. Ticketmaster fees charged on tickets should be considered Flames revenue.

A surcharge is a way to pass on the arena cost to consumers who choose to attend Flames games (a very reasonable idea, in my opinion.)

    The math is simple:

[(expenses  - other revenue) + (capital investment)*(1+ROR)]/[(# games per year)*(avg attendance)] = avg ticket price

    where:

expenses = salaries, travel, equipment, advertising, etc. for the year

other revenue = beer, concessions, parking, merchandise, etc. for the year

capital investment = what the owners paid for the team

ROR = the rate of return the Flames owners want on their investment

    # games per year = 41 + 4 (because they charge full price for all the exhibition games)

avg attendance = average number of tickets sold per home game

avg ticket price = the average price per ticket the Flames need to charge to make the owner's investment profitable.

The ticket surcharge, Ticketmaster fees and GST are added to the cost of the ticket.  Consumers then decide whether or not they are willing to pay to go to a Flames game.

Anyone one who is siding with Ken King/the Flames ownership needs to consider this:

Eric Francis is siding with Ken King and the owners.  That almost automatically makes KK and the owners wrong.

I side for neither side, if that was directed at me.

But I sense your rage (best yoda voice).

And if you don't mind, can you just call him EF, his full name sears my eyes.

  3. Frustrated by bureaucracy? I'm guessing could be one cause.

The said, King is right. Victoria Park is a terrible plan.

The CSEC is right with their location, just overshooting an all-in-one plan.

Build your arena, do some extraneous development of restaurants and hotels, if it turns into a football/field house down the road great.

    One burning question.

Do we have to host a multi-bilion dollar Olympics every time our own home city's most popular team needs a new arena?

But you're right cross, KK, that statement was a trainwreck. Very apparent when the 1st question was, "why don't the billionaires and millionaires just pay for it"?

This is definitely political now. It's definitely off the tracks.

2nd burning question. Why is city council dictating location? East side of downtown Calgary? Really?

That's a bigger seedy area than even the west side of downtown Calgary, I've been around.

Our team needs a new arena. Incompetence ensues from all involved is what it boils down to for me.

Pump you're chests out boys, you're both, and likely all, too enamoured with yourselves.

Again, this isn't remotely considered an investment, nor does it seem any attempt is being made to make it one.

No I certainly didn't. The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is collecting property taxes from the downtown area (not just from "nothing was there" neighbourhood) and using most of them towards funding for schools in Detroit. This property tax is public funding and now a huge chunk of it is going towards funding the new arena and therefor less amount of public funds are going towards schools. There's a lot of good info on it in DDA's and the Detroit City Council's websites.

The idea here is that public funds are for the public. A brand new arena will never pay for itself. The CSEC needs to share revenue with the City of Calgary, because it is a very affordable loan when public funds are used and it needs to be paid back rather sooner than later. The ripple effect has been researched numerous times and it never comes even close to boost the public portion of the economy than what was proposed.

One could ask: "Where is the capitalism when it comes to privately owned professional sports teams?"

Fair enough, you have an anti agenda.

    I'm just discussing.

The Ilitch's and Olympia got $200mil in bonds from the city. $250mil from the state. That doesn't cover half of the $1.2bil tag.

If I remember correctly, Olympia pays the state bond off and any interest on the city bond.

    Seems extremely fair.

Council just voted 8-4 to make details of the negotiations public. Sounds like in the next few days we will learn details of both sides the proposal but rumors are, and Nenshi confirmed this was part of it, was the breakdown was a 1/3 -1/3-1/3 cost split between Flames - City - and a ticket surcharge/tax.

    https://twitter.com/meyer_lucas/status/908030850121351168

Yay ticket surcharge, they aren't too expensive already. To build in the same big flood plain area that is devoid of any kind of positives, oh yay.

Just build it near Cross Iron Mills, for that matter.

None of this is viewed as investment, at all. Just loss.

KK can't pull in investors and the city wants the cheapest solution.

Please, do sell the Flames, to the downtown conglomerates, there's enough of them.

There are times I feel the Flames are more a hobby than a business.

There's a lot of good info on it in wiki and the Detroit Free Press.

Why can't we be owned by the Ilitch's, hahaha.

They got $250mil from the city in bonds sold to Merrill Lynch. The city intends to pay it off with increase in tax base in the pretty much "nothing was there" neighbourhood.

Another $200mil for state issued bonds the Ilitch's will pay back to Comerica Bank, that bought the bonds.

The initial estimate for the arena was $450mil. Actual will be around $650mil. From the getgo, the Ilitch's said they'd cover any overruns off of original, in fact, threw an extra $100mil in upgrades to it on purpose.

Olympia Holdings, an Ilitch company, has brought in much investment and developers into the area. The total cost of arena and surrounding "entertainment district" is expected to be $1.2bil. Much of that is private investors Olympia has secured.

Like that wasn't enough, the Ilitch's donated $40mil to Wayne State University in Detroit to build a new School for Business building...

Mike Ilitch was a businessman too, just like KK.

He just happened to be a really good one...

Detroit just got out of bankruptcy maybe 18 months ago, so the "economic climate" argument falls on deaf ears.

We have ginormous corporations in Calgary, shouldn't be hard to find investors...if you're Mike Ilitch...

    Page 17 of this thread.

xmiika, you totally read that article wrong. Why would they be relying on education tax base? That makes no sense.

Smith was pretty much the result of Burkes mandate for more truculence at the time. Dvorak had good numbers even before he got injured. It's pure hindsight now but reuniting Dvorak/Tkachuk and maybe adding someone like Foo on the RW would have been a pretty exciting kid line

No he didn't. He missed almost his entire draft year. The following year he turned into a ninja.

They took Max Domi the year before (Knights teammate). Just spitballing, but in scouting Domi, they saw enough of Dvorak to be impressed. Or as happens also, they had a little birdie in their ear. Those can come from a few directions, even a "concerned parent", lol, or their scout REALLY hangs around the Knights.

At any rate, I doubt it was a lucky guess as it appears to be.

You want your scouts to be dangerous, their O scouting is exactly that.

"Hey everyone, stay on task. We have to convince Johnny C to take a yr of Datsyuk at $7.5 if Chychrun's still on the board".

ARI has been very crafty at getting really good O players. They're ripping it, I'd say.

    Honourable mention:

Dylan Strome (aka not his older brother)

    Brendan Perlini

Clayton Keller - was mere hours away from the OHL setting, playing in Michigan.

Everyone keeps saying ARI will be a bottom-feeder again this year. I have this really uneasy feeling about that.

  8. So would Vincent Trockek, lol.

Draft picks are the biggest assets in this day and age. I'm worried with Hamonic, not gonna lie.

I'm always leery, the timelines on his game seeming to go in the wrong direction align with asking to be traded west.

I don't know jack squat so I'm left with assumptions, and about 7 different varieties.

My hope is he's going to be out there with Brodie and laugh, "wow, I can do this all season".

I believe BT is gambling on Hamonic, it's a good gamble, I agree with it.

I just think the Stone signing was an insurance policy on Hamonic.

    It rubs me that way.

  9. 31 minutes ago, cross16 said:

Dvorak is a really tricky one because he shredded his knee in his draft year. So not only were you taking a player with limited experience you were taking a major injury risk.

Good on the Coyotes for taking it but when it comes to hindsight you have to factor that in too. Could have easily gone the other way if his knee never recovered so that is a medical issue as much, or more, than a scouting one.

    Yup.

Still doesn't make Smith a very good 2nd round pick, though.

I think I am the only one wanting to see Janks with those 2. The more I look at it I see Poirier as a good tryout with the Backs line. Poirier is a fast straight line player. With Backs line getting the majority defensive end starts poirier would capitalize on dump ins forcing the opposition defence and goalie into quick judgements. Backs and Frolik are smart enough to capitalize on this. Definitely worth a look as Poirier is hungry to prove himself after a problem season.

(If successful would make a league wide feel good story)

I brought it up a few weeks ago but don't know if I was first. But like anything, it's for discussion.

Like kehatch said, it's nice to have some ELC's on the roster, but of course it is up to the player to show he belongs.

Most are slotting him as a 4C. Just thought I'd add in another scenario that seems like it could have potential, but again, for discussion purposes.

I'm still wondering if Frolik is our 1RW if we make no other moves.

We have so many wingers, I hope maybe GG can get creative, particularly to get Bennett someone higher up the talent chart to play with.

I played Ted on a hockey team where the goalie was passionate, yelling compliments and letting us know we boardinged up. It didn't change how I viewed him. I respected it.

I highly doubt a seasoned NHL goalie is playing subterfuge, put it that way.

If he's screaming, he just might be really choked.

I want US to have that in our goalie.

Get pissed off, be my guest.

I thought that Lack was a decent backup in Vancouver.

I didn't watch any of his games with Carolina, so no eye test there for me.

If his play can mirror his time with the Canucks, he should be slightly better than Johnson.

Exactly the way I view it.

I like what redfire is saying about Smith yelling at guys.

    I want that emotion.

    "You humiliated me out there"....boo-freaking-hoo.

    Don't come back for seconds...

If a goalie isn't verbally abusive on his D, he probably isn't doing his job. lol.

Send the entire D corps for Sensitivity Training in reverse. Don't get all sensitive because you boardinged up.

Ahhh, if only the world worked that way again, lol.

Lol.. Timmy is a free agent and likely cheap.. anyone for this former 1st round pick?

Tim Carl Erixon (born 24 February 1991) is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenseman who is currently a free agent.

Don't hold back.. tell us what you think.....

Is Erixon a Swedish word for entitlement over earning?

Perhaps we should have taken almost anyone else in the 2009 top 2 rounds...except Ryan Howse...oh wait...

While true, from November 15th on the flames had the 4th most wins in the NHL. That's a sample size of 66 games. So for 3/4 of the season they were a very good team and were terrible for 1 quarter. The bad start is the small sample size.

I dont get the "stars aligning or luck" argument because imo last year was he opposite. The flames had horrible puck luck at times and overal got avg to below avg goaltending, and their stars struggled so I'm not seeing how the stars aligned for them last year. They were very healthy though so it's very possible they get a key injury or two this season and that would have an impact.

Not to be a stick in the mud. But your 1st paragraph is to DD.

I had to go back in the thread to find out the 2nd paragraph is responding to jj.

I like both of those cats, but they are definitely varying cats.

Your post reads like it's all DD, that's why I went, wuh?

My general thoughts here, when reflecting on this current thread:   I think expectations may be a tad too high.

We made some upgrades to D, on paper at least.   But I feel like the mood on here is best-case scenario.  And maybe it should be.   But it definitely is that.

Do you expect us to have more points than last year? Last year we were loathesome out of the gate. That alone is reason for optimism. Last year it looked like a crime scene.

I truly believe it actually helps teams that have heavy workloads early to come together and get it together.

Good summary of the two players.

I think a lot of people would have liked to have Larsson, as a young guy with potential.  Had we dealt a 1st and 2 2nds for him, there would have been more complaining, though.  The Oilers paid big for potential, but as you say, also paid for a top 2.  They also paid almost as much for a player that Vegas took for nothing.  We have paid for two top 4 players with nothing more than a handful of draft picks.  And one of them is already a top 2.  We didn't have to send away our top scoring LW to do it.

I was listening to Stauffer on the CHED today, if you've got time for a funny story...

He was comparing the Russell signing to our Hamonic trade in a kind of, "we did better by not losing a handful of high picks" approach.

But let's face it, it's kind of a July conversation that even my ADD wouldn't think to drift into a comparison on that.

So his guest comes on, and Stauffer plies into this again, and I learned I wasn't the only one confused by the point he was trying to make.

When he laid out the Hamonic for a 1st and 2 2nds, his guest immediately responded, "that's like the Reinhardt trade to Edmonton, I think Calgary gave up one more pick, but they got a heavily experienced NHLer. Edmonton got a prospect that they lost for nothing".

It was classic. I think his guest was just as confused as I was when he was making whatever point it was prior to having the guest on.....Stauffer never did get on point with his guest about it.

    Sideshow Bob, is that you?

ummm are you saying hamonic is more physical then larsson?

Similar players. Both play a very simple "get the puck out" game that Oilers fans now love, and we're about to.

Larsson will always go body first into a battle, that's why he's the hit leader. Yet there is never that "devastating" hit like Reggie on Hemsky *ahh, memories*....

Last season was a real misnomer for Hamonic's career. It's easy to reflect on the W. Canada revelation timeline and become suspicious of all that went on afterwards.

He plays a challenge the puck carrier game like Larsson, just more reticent about over-committing and all around a safer game imho.

Where Larsson takes himself out of the play one-on-one against the boards too often, Hamonic doesn't.

He can be just as physical or more than Larsson, he just doesn't constantly play that way like Larsson does.

I like Larsson and always have, but he over commits, all of the time to taking the body. You can throw a decoy at him just to tie him up in the corner to test their forwards on D.

Our past D was brought up earlier. Reggie and Phaneuf and to a lesser degree Sarich....I hated them a lot when they blatantly over-committed to make the big hit.

    And it was constant.

Hamonic just plays D, plain and simple. If he HAS to be physical, he will. If he HAS to be calm, he will.

Unlike Larsson also, he doesn't have to come here as a #2 minimum, #4.

Not bad for a guy who has worn a letter on a good team.

We wanted a defencive dman, BT went out and got one of the best.

    Good for the Flames.

Burke said off the hop, "if we are paying you, you have obligations to pay back in our communities, that is non-negotiable".

This is a great signing for all involved.

A poster on here spoke of acquiring Larsson before "the trade" and it wasn't well received.

To him, and I won't mention The People by name, err, umm, where was I?

A year and a bit later, we have Hamonic, and god I can't wait.

Our O will get better just by practicing against our D...

    +1

They've also got De Haan to pick up the slack..

Not what I'd do, but seeing as it is such, Rasmus for Ho-Sang sounds fair, lol.
