  1. That is the joke though. Approach is the same but because the name is cool now we are good. I just find it funny.
  2. I've always viewed it that it was a ploy to try and get more money and perhaps Van was balking at it. The flames gave him a very rich deal for a 3rd rounder, it rivals what first round picks get. for reference Brzustewics got 950K total/year,a 95k signing bonus each year and 82.5K Minors salary. Porier, Flames 3rd rounder 2020 got 823k with 85K signing, 2 K less on his minors salary Gurshnikov, a 2nd rounder, got 814K, 92K signing bonus and 2K less on his minor salary Brz's deal is identical to what the Flames gave Honzek, their first rounder last year. Flames paid him very well for his draft status.
  3. I have no idea. I don't really prioritize position, I'd advocate BPA. I just think it's funny that a BPA approach that has led to LS wingers was criticized and now that same approach is cool.
  4. So to be clear after spending years ripping the Flames for taking LS wingers we are now good with them taking them again? Just trying to keep up
  5. Which I would agree with him on. The Flames are shallower at both the NHL and at the AHL level than the Canucks so there is more opportunity. Especially along the Right side. I'm not expecting to see him for 2-3 years.
  6. He actually didn't at least not in that article or any article i've seen. Even if he did he also says he's fine with AHL or NHL so i'm not sure where the controversy is here.
  7. Not sure how much weight the rumor held but he did comment that he is more excited about Calgary then Van. Don't think that means he can't play in the AHL and I also don't think for a second the Flames would have signed him with any type of promise. Calgary's blueline, post trade, is quite a bit shallower at all levels vs the Canucks so there is definitely more opportunity here at both the NHL and AHL levels. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/flames-mailbag-what-to-expect-from-hunter-brzustewicz/
  8. Small clarification, Miromanov already has a contract. Signed right after they acquired him. So at the NHL level your looking: Weegar - Anderson ??? - Miromanov Okhotiuk - Pachal Hanley Really it hinges on Kylington. I think if he wants to keep playing the flames will sign him but there is a possibility he doesn't. If he's back then I don't see the need to pursue any UFAs. it's not a good crop this year so you'd be looking at stop gap types, signing someone to a 2-3 year deal or less to solidify. not sure I see the value in that when next year the focus should not be on getting better, but rather trying to see what you have. Don't get me wrong, not suggesting that is a good D core, it isn't, but I don't see many UFAs that are going to help much. If Kylington were not to re sign then that would change things and I think they'd need to target someone. People of interest to me: TJ Brodie Brett Pesce (althought a LS would be preferred) Alec Martinez Ghost Ian Cole not pretty....
  9. This one hurts me. Remember how excited I was when the Flames acquired him before the 04 run. He was a force during those playoffs and it was always sad to me his Flames tenure was so short. He was tough yes but he could impact the game in so many ways. More skilled then he got credit for. RIP. Pretty sad day.
  10. For the roster? why do anything. Remember there is no more roster limit after the trade deadline.
  11. It has also been said that Craig Conroy and Fitzgerald have a great working relationship. They worked together in USA hockey. And also NJ called about Saros as well as other goalies too.
  12. He needs waivers. Don't think the Flames would risk it. I don't think Gilbert views himself as an AHL player so keeping him up here is best for him too I think.
  13. Especially considering the GM made comments about feeling extorted.
  14. Your not locked in if the player doesn't work out, which most College FA don't.
  15. Probably don't want to lose anyone off waivers
  16. I'm not sure why Treliving has to come up so much around here. Everything seems to need to be Conroy vs BT and I don't get it. He chose to leave so let's move on with the new GM. I don't view this is as a Conroy error it's a front office error. European players have a later signing age (up to 27) due to the International agreement. That would be my understanding is that now they would be free to do a longer term deal if they wanted to. Not sure why they would though.
  17. September 15th has long been the date they use to determine signing age. That's a miss from the Flames. Not a serious one but they 100% should have known better. It sucks for the player because biggest different between ELC and SPC is bonuses. So the 95K bonus he was set to get is out the window. Be hard pressed to think this means he won't sign something with the Flames but it's not as favorable to him as it was before. But worth remembering the rules are the same for everyone.
  18. Not a surprise. Hasn't been very good since coming back from surgery and probably should have spent more time in the A post operation.
  19. 9th overall. at age 27 A 34 year old goalie is not going to net you a top 10 pick. Not unless the Flames want to add to the deal.
  20. outside of Kadri and Backlund none of those players you listed are currently playing center nor have they played center for multiple seasons now. Never mind the age of Backlund and Kadri. of course they need a number one but they also need depth so they can have some guys rise through the ranks as there isn’t much to offer. Flames are just a part of it, Wranglers are thin too In terms of prospects I think the only center the Flames have that has even minimal NHL potential in their entire system is Jaden Lipinski. 4th rounder from last year
  21. Because they weren't centers. Drafted as such doesn't mean that's your position in the NHL Flames need true centers.
  22. Center depth is the next big area of focus for the Flames. Conroy did a nice job of building up some depth in defense and I think center is the next position he needs to target, so this is a nice start.
  23. You can see why the Flames liked Miromanov and why he wasn't just a throw in. Still not sure he was the best target but I do get why they wanted him. I like a lot of what I've seen but there are red flags too. He is a very heavy foot skater so in transition, change of direction and acceleration I think he is below avg. Straight line speed is fine but in the D zone I do see times where he gives up chances or get's beat on a rush because I just don't think he has the footspeed. What he's done a nice job of so far to compensate is he's got a fantastic stick. So in order to avoid getting caught with his skating, his stick can shut down the play and turn it the other way. Pairing him with Kylington has also covered up some of his as well. Working so far, but IMO skating like his tends to cause issues at some point so we'll see how it goes. Michael Stone is a pretty good comparison so far, which leads me to believe he's more of a 3rd pairing guy then a top 4 one, but that will depends on if he can adjust once the league adjust to him.
  24. I personally thought it was classless to boo Hanifin. Guy did nothing wrong. You are a UFA you get to pick where you want to play and he didn't want to play in Canada anymore. Told the team and they moved him. The whole "agent hijacked this" thing is ridiculous and such a media driven story. No reason to boo him. Made the fan base look petty.
