  1. Your not locked in if the player doesn't work out, which most College FA don't.
  2. Probably don't want to lose anyone off waivers
  3. I'm not sure why Treliving has to come up so much around here. Everything seems to need to be Conroy vs BT and I don't get it. He chose to leave so let's move on with the new GM. I don't view this is as a Conroy error it's a front office error. European players have a later signing age (up to 27) due to the International agreement. That would be my understanding is that now they would be free to do a longer term deal if they wanted to. Not sure why they would though.
  4. September 15th has long been the date they use to determine signing age. That's a miss from the Flames. Not a serious one but they 100% should have known better. It sucks for the player because biggest different between ELC and SPC is bonuses. So the 95K bonus he was set to get is out the window. Be hard pressed to think this means he won't sign something with the Flames but it's not as favorable to him as it was before. But worth remembering the rules are the same for everyone.
  5. Not a surprise. Hasn't been very good since coming back from surgery and probably should have spent more time in the A post operation.
  6. 9th overall. at age 27 A 34 year old goalie is not going to net you a top 10 pick. Not unless the Flames want to add to the deal.
  7. outside of Kadri and Backlund none of those players you listed are currently playing center nor have they played center for multiple seasons now. Never mind the age of Backlund and Kadri. of course they need a number one but they also need depth so they can have some guys rise through the ranks as there isn’t much to offer. Flames are just a part of it, Wranglers are thin too In terms of prospects I think the only center the Flames have that has even minimal NHL potential in their entire system is Jaden Lipinski. 4th rounder from last year
  8. Because they weren't centers. Drafted as such doesn't mean that's your position in the NHL Flames need true centers.
  9. Center depth is the next big area of focus for the Flames. Conroy did a nice job of building up some depth in defense and I think center is the next position he needs to target, so this is a nice start.
  10. You can see why the Flames liked Miromanov and why he wasn't just a throw in. Still not sure he was the best target but I do get why they wanted him. I like a lot of what I've seen but there are red flags too. He is a very heavy foot skater so in transition, change of direction and acceleration I think he is below avg. Straight line speed is fine but in the D zone I do see times where he gives up chances or get's beat on a rush because I just don't think he has the footspeed. What he's done a nice job of so far to compensate is he's got a fantastic stick. So in order to avoid getting caught with his skating, his stick can shut down the play and turn it the other way. Pairing him with Kylington has also covered up some of his as well. Working so far, but IMO skating like his tends to cause issues at some point so we'll see how it goes. Michael Stone is a pretty good comparison so far, which leads me to believe he's more of a 3rd pairing guy then a top 4 one, but that will depends on if he can adjust once the league adjust to him.
  11. I personally thought it was classless to boo Hanifin. Guy did nothing wrong. You are a UFA you get to pick where you want to play and he didn't want to play in Canada anymore. Told the team and they moved him. The whole "agent hijacked this" thing is ridiculous and such a media driven story. No reason to boo him. Made the fan base look petty.
  12. That whole "agent is hijacking the process" got so over blown.
  13. I would have preferred they never call him up to be honest. I agree, he needs to gain a step. I think he's played solid and just been a bit snake bitten in terms of his results. But you can see his foot speed and strength get exposes a bit at this level. Quite a few pucks a game where if he could get there, he'd get more chances and/or increase the quality of chances. Can get knocked off his spot a bit too easy now, and doesn't have that agility yet to get to open space which is really where he needs to be for his shot. He's played solid though so I don't think there should be troubling signs, but he's really got to just work on getting stronger/quicker in his initial stride I think to reach his potential. He should work with whomever Zary worked with.
  14. I do hope, and quite frankly I expect it now, the Flames to get into the 8-10 range. outside the top 10 is not bad in this draft but I don't think it's as exciting. Yes the Iginla factor is cool but as a prospect it's not as exciting as some of the other names that should be going top 10.
  15. Late first round picks are IMO the most overrated asset their is. It is, wrongfully IMO, assumed that a first is a first but when you get outside the top half of the draft the odds of you grabbing an impact NHLer drop quite a bit. As Brewcrew states, the odds aren't that drastically different from the end of the 1st to the end of the second. So value wise I don't think a 1 and a bad contract is better than a 2nd and a B/B- prospect. So I think the Flames were fine to pass on those offers but ultimately going to come down to Grushnikov. Said this at the time and still rings true that I do think it's fair to question if taking the prospect value was better than taking the draft pick value.
  16. Felt like a typical afternoon game to me. Flames just not fully engaged in it. im sure there’s gonna be a few of these but I didn’t see alarming things. Just saw a team not there in terms of details and execution which happens in these afternoon games.
  17. I don’t like Francis and I don’t like this style of reporting but unfortunately it’s what people want. I don’t think he’s inventing the idea of trading Kadri but many fans are asking it so he’s just doing his job i think and have heard Kadri is really happy here though and is excited about being part of this. Be surprised if went anywhere.
  18. I'll give this team a lot of credit, they battle hard. I know they won't give up. But I have a hard time seeing that d core being able to get them into the playoffs. I don't think the bottom is going to drop out, but over 20 games I just don't think there is enough there for them to keep their heads above water night after night. I think they stumble and wind up playing slightly under .500 hockey from here out and wind up in the 10-13 range of the draft.
  19. I don't think the price goes up the longer you wait, because you risk having teams fall out of the race, you risk teams not having cap space etc. Plus you also have the risk that if Markstrom doesn't play as well or you have the risk that he does and he plays you outside the top 10 and your giving up a mid first to Montreal. Actually it's built on the premise that the Flames should WANT to move him. We don't need to go back and forth on this again but I will say it is 100% a mistake if Markstrom is on this team next year. Makes no sense for me to not take the future assets. Yes, mentorship blah blah I get it.. but that isn't more valuable than the future assets they've been offered. this team is building for 3 years from now so keeping a 34 year old goalie is illogical to me.
  20. Have to admit, the Oilers forwards are looking good. I think they are deep, well balanced, and now they have lines they can use outside of just McDavid/Draisitl. How they got them is questionable, but they are there. That d though.... I really like the Ekholm-Bouchard pairing but past that it's pretty yikes. Think in the playoffs that core is gonna get exposed and i'm still not a believer that Skinner is good enough to cover that up.
  21. I agree, this is why I wonder if the Flames over played their hand. The assumption is the goalie market will get better but i'm not so sure I see it the same way. There are going to be options and if the Devils thought Calgary's price was too high yesterday, why would the suddenly pay it in the summer? I do think Ilya Sorokin is a pretty interesting free agent. 29, wasn't that long ago some thought he was amongst the better goalie in the league. Ullmark is really interesting. Sounds like there was a deal in place yesterday to go to LA and he said no Will he say no again in the summer or did he just not want to move at the deadline? What does Florida do with Knight? There were some suggestions they were open to moving him. Lots of moving parts to the goalie market. Flames might have more options to negotiate with but i'm not so sure it's going to lead to the type of deal they are after.
  22. To clarify, Montreal gets the option to take the pick. It's not automatic and 100% their call to make.
  23. Are you able to add to that, or are you basing this off of "reporting"? Just curious if you do because IMO, this is not what happened so I don't think we should be speaking as if it's fact.
