truth is. Mike Smith has outplayed Markstrom the whole series. And that can’t happen.

i agree on Toffoli. He looks odd. Has looked odd since the excitement of coming here has died down.

He was so clutch his first two weeks.  Sniping goals and looking dangerous consistently.  He made you overlook all his flaws.

But now, he won't score even if he's got a chance point blank.  He passes when he should shoot.  He shoots when he should pass.  He goes off the glass and out when he's got a linemate streaking full speed up the middle.  He can't handle a simple pass cleanly.

We're talking shades of James Neal here... only saving grace is Toffoli can defend.  He's still defensively capable and aware.  He's still willing to come back and be responsible.

Gonna hear a whole bunch of “It’s do or die!”, “We just gotta win one at home”, “Win the next 3 or go home”, “It’s another game 7 for us” but will this team show up on Thursday ? Haven’t played a complete game let alone complete period since Game 1. This game was better?…but we still lost. 3 in a row now. Maybe this will spark more of that urgency we caught throughout this game but this Battle of Alberta has been one sided so far. Shame we pretty much battled ourselves this series

this is unfortunately the fear I had when they acquired him. He’s made more to score goals than create them and in order for him to score he needs someone to get him the puck. Who does that on this team?

to be fair I think he’s actually played fairly well in these playoffs he just cannot buy one and now he’s probably clutching it too much. That shot he missed in the slot was big. That has got to go in.

Even though Markstrom came back in a big way after the 1st period, i still dont think he deserves the next start, he just doesn't, period.  He cost us the series.

I can think of two guys wearing striped jerseys that cost us game 2.

19 players that cost us game 3.

5 guys that cost us the GWG in game 4.

Maybe we can't win in EDM not having last change.

Or maybe rehink the whole idea of rolling 4 lines against a team that rolls 2.

The two lines that scored the important 1st and 2nd goals were off the ice for the GWG.

Sure they just played, but so what.

Your best players generally are your best players.

Big gaff on Markstrom but it balanced with the gaff by Smith. Tanev loses a battle becasue of his shoulder nad every Oiler ran tanev because he was hurt. Kylington loses his positioning on the go ahead goal.  There are some simply truths to this that can;t be denied. Lucic love the guy waste of a roster spot, Kylington is hugely disappointing, Stone and Lucic out for the go ahead goal, not a wise choice.  The fact is that Tanev is a soild puck moving guy stablizes the D core. There was a chance but the players have been 100% responsible for the loss. Sutter has been great this year, but there is only so much you can do with average. We have some pieces but the largest holes we have are on Defense.

Yes, Toffoli was the wrong target from the beginning.

He's looked okay on a line with Dube-Jarnkrok.  Two players with good speed and good ability to cycle.  That line has been dependable in a defensive role.  That said, Toffoli is in over his head on the top PP unit.  Plays are dying on his stick and he needs to get off that unit right away.  It's literally an instant turnover when he tries to make moves and stick handle.  So sad to see.

If you are looking for positives, this series has been relatively close and the flames have not found their game, their Vezina caliber goalie has been 80% his normal self and your rival has played 3 straight excellent games. Their is a recipe there for being able to win 3 straight if a few things go their way.

with the level McDavid is playing at it’s going to be awfully tough but it’s there.

Even Sutter stopped coaching after we tied the game.  Whole team just stopped playing.  I don't know why.  Why would you go Stone-Kylington to bring the game to OT?

But ya, Sutter can only do so much.  Kylington has had flashes of good play marred by big mistakes on defense.  Stone just isn't an NHL caliber Dman anymore.  He's only a PP specialist with a great shot.

Our hopes hang on Tanev's shoulders... slight pun intended but it's true.  We don't have our best Dman to pull off 3 straight wins.

We have too many small guys that can't pass and a defensive C.

Bring in a Pelletier, and Toffoli is a stud.

As much as I like Dube, he's done almost nothing for the 3rd line.

Even Coleman would have helped.

There are things to be said about being the toughest team in the league.

But that means nothing unless you use it and aren't constantly scored on.

I have in no way given up the series.

Just like a game you spotted a 3 goal lead, it just takes a win to start clawing back.

A bad line change gives up a tie.

A D pinching on the wrong side of the play creates the penalty that killed the rest of the period.

Even playing this poorly for long stretches, we were still within a period of going up 2-0 in the series.

Imagine what we would do if we played a full game.

I feel good we can win the next game back home.  Just have to start there I guess.

We did some good things tonight like shut down McDavid and limit his chances.  We had some good o-zone pressure for long stretches.  Although we were kept to the outside, it was still a positive change in momentum.  We scored a fluke goal against Smith so it's got to be in his head now.  We have to build off that.  That's the only way.

It seemed that once we got the tie, we just had barely enough to get to 15 minutes.

After the Backlund line, it should have been either the top line or the 3rd line.

Dube isn't getting through anyone lately.

Playing with Lucic, they are trying to push the forecheck and cycle.

But Dube is too small with the heavies.

Ricthie would have been a better choice in that situation.

Really the best choice is parking the 4th oine on the bench at that point.

Unlikely, but there’s a path to a comeback.

As phenomenal as 97 has been, 2+ pts a night is unsustainable. Edmonton scoring on 1 of every 5 shots is unsustainable.

Flames have yet to have .900 goaltending from Markstrom in the series.

Maybe in game 5 the Flames hold McDavid to a single point or less and win. Maybe you get a stellar performance in a game 6

They always say the 4th win is the toughest and I believe that. On the other hand, when down 3-0 or 3-1, the first one is also the toughest. Just win a game and the task becomes less daunting. If they can get it to 3-2, it doesn’t matter that it was 3-1 at one point, the series is either over or 3-2 after 5, just gotta shift the focus to the next one

Worse than playing the 4 line was playing them with Kylington-Stone, our worst pairing.

We can talk a lot about depth but in the last 3 games Gaudreau and Tkachuk have combined for 3 points and have been held scoreless for 2 games now

combine that with Markstroms play and it’s not hard to see why it’s 3-1 and what’s going to need to change if they want to come back.

They felt the same pressure as us and folded once they got the lead up 3.

Folded is not quite right.  Bent under pressure.

They did not look comfortable at all.

Too few playing too many minutes.

5 guys playing 20 or more.

But maybe a better strategy than just rolling 4.

Markstrom was not tight on his post on two goals.

Not problems if your D can handle the rebounds.

Tanev lost all strength on one play.

Kylington lost position, but that happens.

No real soft goals though.

They were obviously resting Tanev at that point.

Just a cruel joke that our best D that brings out the best in the other guy is off the ice.

Maybe Tanev gets beat to the puck behind the net, but letting the little turd walk out like that was just so wrong.
