I am not supportive of this idea. That is, to be more concerned with pairs rather than lines. It seems to me that when you focus on pairs, that means the third individual on the line is an afterthought or easily replaceable. I would rather see us build four solid lines rather than constantly mix up players from different lines. I understand that you need to experiment a bit and change things up when they are clearly not working. I think that the more integrated players are, the better they will play because they can quickly react impulsively rather than overthinking every move. I think that was one of our biggest problems this year. We move too slowly (I mean passing as well as actual movement) because we were trying to think through our move.

It comes down to how it is executed for sure you're right. however, I find with pairs it doesn't necessarily mean the 3rd person is constantly rotated all the time it just means your open to it. Personally, I am a pairs guy too because it allows you to keep a bulk of your lines together but still allows flexibility to move guys around depends on who is going. I'm a believer that it's not very common to have all your line up going at the same time every night you are going to have guys that are on and some that are not. By having the pairs it gives you the flexibility to change your look without having to change every single line but I would agree if it means your constantly in a blender that isn't ideal. I have heard from a few people that Peters is sometimes too quick to switch up lines so we'll see how that plays out.

So one of the rumours I've been seeing around is that Bill Peters is apparently planning on meeting Marco Sturm who is trying to break into the NHL as a coach.

this would be very cool. I was incredibly impressed with Germany at the Olympics and Sturm should get a lot of credit for that. Plus, was actually a real good player in he day too.

Many criticize coaches records in a rebuild, they never had a winning record (here) and then use it as the same excuse for Peters. It can’t work both ways.

But at the same time, the pro Hartley crowd's rebuttal was Hartley was a good coach who got let down by goaltending. Peters record in Carolina is similar to Hartley, actually better, and Hartley actually got better goaltending than Peters did. so does that mean that excuse can't work both ways?

I dunno, marginally better.

I liked hartley and then I didn’t like him in his last year.

His system was bad, but also at a time when we didn’t have much to go on. Has his system always been the same, or did he play that way because he wasn’t going to really have anyone that was a long term player, but wanted to give the fans a show? That was what he preached when he got hired.

It idoesn’t matter, I also hated their defence when he was coach.

I think something hybrid could work, not all run and gun, but a mix up.

The puck luck moves faster than players do, so we can speed up our team play using the system.

In vancouver, the twins arnt speedy but could play fast up ice by passing.

I am am changing my idea on Peters, because I like the idea of having the puck. We just have to move it faster than we have.

I dont see the Johnny carry PP changing much for zone entry. I see a lot of teams use the drop back to enter the zone with momentum... it just needs to be tweaked.

If Peters can get them playing fast in both ends of the ice, that’s awesome!

The guy is hired.  He is bringing some very necessary elements that the Flames were sorely lacking under GG.  His team never made the payoffs in Carolina.  Focus where you will.  As for me, I'm behind it, I believe he addresses most of the issues I had with GG.  We'll see if that translates to wins, which I suspect it will because I like our line-up.  Ultimately there is no one right answer, and as for coaches, what works one place doesn't the next and vice versa.  Next step-assistant coaches.

I'm still taking a firm show and prove stance with Billy P. Why crown him before he's coached a single game for the Flames? Sure, he said a lot of the right things but so did GG during his presser...talk is cheap. I'm neutral until I can identify the style of play and identity of this team. Coaching Canada to another gold at the Worlds would be a nice start, anything short of that will only intensify the questions surrounding his hiring as Flames HC.

I like what he said, now it’s time to see if it translates onto the play of the team. Hopefully it does. I don’t even give him a year though. With what we’ve paid the past few years for failures, I am still going in with high expectations. The amount of draft picks used in trades in the past two - three years and counting needs to translate into success.

There is never a guarantee with draft picks, but having more tickets gives a better chance at success. We need to see results now.

You guys are starting to sound like the hiring and firing committee. LOL

There will definitely be expectations involving both BP and more significantly BT. BT as been bold enough to spend on players using both cash and high draft picks to get us where we are today. I still think our team has another season to go before we see the experience and maturity to find the consistency required to win as a team. Timing is everything and one thing the team does have now is the core will also be moving into the Leadership roles which is important. Having said this we still need Tkachuk, Bennett and Jankowski to have growing success in order to be a better team.

You've been saying this since training camp last Fall, and it seemed like a built-in excuse for failure, and a pass for GG.  Over the season the excuses came home to roost but I'm putting most of the blame on GG, and other issues and less on maturing.  Having said all that I agree at this point very much with your last line, and think that Bennett and Jankowski making a jump would be huge for this team moving forward.  Of course, trades are likely to happen and these guys might not be here.  It will be very interesting what happens over the next 3 months.

I think it is our reality which you keep wanting to deny and pretend it doesn't exist. I will use TOR as an example because I see them in the same boat as ourselves. The big difference is the experienced players they have incorporated such as Marleau, JVR and Bozak along with having a topnotch Goaltender. Mathews is an exceptional player from the get go which as been their saving grace where as Nylander and Marner are similar to our Bennett and Tkachuk situation. They have a fairly young defence that could use some maturing and a few better pieces. There are no short cuts to gaining the required experience so leadership and team work put you into a winning position.

Experience is great, but don't use it as an excuse.  Chicago won their first of 3 cups when their kids were still on the ELCs, I believe....

You go check that out because I doubt it. I have already told you it is no excuse it is our reality. Can't help you if you think a bunch of kids can win a SC. Good luck.

Anyone else more excited to watch the World Championships than the rest of the playoffs? I am really interested to see how Peters coaches team Canada, and I really could care less about any of the team's left in the playoffs.

No Sir, I don't share this sentiment at all.

I realize that our boys are out of it, and it was painful to watch the last couple months of the regular season, but there is some excellent hockey being played right now. While I couldn't care less about another Penguins/Capitals storyline, I am really looking forward to seeing how the other series' pan out. Winnipeg/Nashville will be fanBlockchainintastic, Boston/Tampa will be excellent as well, and San Jose/Las Vegas will be fast, and should be loads of fun to watch.

That's not to say that the World Championships are unworthy of attention, but if you're ignoring the playoffs because your team isn't in it, you're missing out on the best hockey that's going to be played in the next six weeks.

I'm not that into NHL playoffs anyway, i'm bitter. I'll probably watch Jets-Preds but that's it.

I view the World Championships as a lose - lose for Peters so i'm not too interested. If Canada doesn't win it will bring all the naysayers out who will call Peters overrated and tell us it was a bad hire because he can't even win with Canada.  If he wins, it will be "well it's Canada we are supposed to win and he has McDavid".

I'll tune into the odd game like I always do but i've seen enough of Peters over 4 years that a short tournament won't change my mind.

Love.

Exceptions to every rule and I would say that is an exceptionally talented roster  throughout, ours is not presently.

I admit that I have not watched much of the playoffs either. With Canadian teams not doing very well, I wonder if Rogers overpaid for their media deal with the NHL.

Love.

Is it mean of me to admit that I followed the Toronto series a bit just because I wanted to see the Leafs lose again? I am always fascinated at how their fans seem so surprised when the same thing happens over and over for decades. Like, are people from Toronto shocked when the sun sets and rises every day?
