  1. Lucic protects your stars. I don't think we need him as much now. There are teams that had to get young guys punched out to see how a liability it is not to protect them. What did Anaheim learn? The cap is the only thing I am concerned about now. He's worth $1M in actual. Many teams would see that as a decent tradeoff. Okay, some teams would. Ottawa could probably save Tkachuk's fighting. Or having no real mean people to protect the Cat or Stutzle.
  2. Both Weeger and Hubie are high value assets signed or unsigned. Considering the return that lesser players brought in TDL trades. The intent obviously is to re-sign them.
  3. It comes down to what you ice and expect those player are able to do. Lucic was not that useful in the playoffs. Monahan was a 4th liner and not really helping much. We would like to be better than last year, and to get there were can';t be just carrying guys.
  4. Maybe I heard this or imagined it, but I though both Little and Bishop were going to retire. We may not need to move either Lucic or Monahan because we have barely enough. Some decisions will be made about the D, which could lessen the need as well. I think you calculated the 11M based on carrying 7D, not 10. Not dire, but not ideal. If we can get cap savings today and replace with productive players, then so be it. Yeah, I'm in no big hurry to spend next year's cap. If we had a replacement for Backlund, perhaps we could trade him before he's a UFA. He's still an important player for us today and we have him signed to 35. Anyway, that's for future discussions.
  5. I think you misunderstood. When I said a wealth of cap, I was referring to if and when we traded Lucic and Monahan. That doesn't happen and we obviously don't have near as much. Buffalo and Anaheim both currently under. Buffalo has Bishop waiting to go on LTIR. ARI has Brian Little. Some other teams might have some interest in Monagan. Who knows. It's not quite the same as trading 2 years of his contract like last summer. I am not really suggesting we take on long term cap dumps either. One ending this year is ideal and might help a cap strapped team sign a player. At the same time, we can't really be paying a premium to get rid of anyone. So, Monahan and Lucic have to be moved only if it is a positive trade.
  6. It's an interesting chart. I would assume that Ras is the guy middle left and Hanifin is middle. Only Kylington had a successful break up number, but was high risk.
  7. Thanks Bosn for getting back on track. What you stated is succinct. We have excess in one place and not enough middle 6 in others. And we have a lack of middle 6, other than hoping young talent can stick and be positive contributors.
  8. Must have missed the azzes handed to us part. Blown out in one game and lost close games the rest of the way. If you like, the game 1 win is about the same as the game 2 loss. An incredibly stupid sequence of calls where we go from a PP to shorthanded on a nothing play from a ref looking to even it up. First series was a goaltending show and a gong show from one of our supposed best players. If your idea is to play power vs power, then your top line better be better than a consistent minus in games. Gaudreau had 3 points in the final 4 games and Tkachuk 1. That's pretty telling, considering we lost mostly 1 goal games.
  9. We didn't have the depth on D that we do now. Even though you point the finger at D being the cause, it was a lot more than that. Tanev taken out of the equation changes us to a 5 man group. But I point to bigger issues with the forward group in the loss to EDM. We lost one game from a poor performance by a 4th line. We barely won a game from a team so pumped by a ton of goals that they wet the bed on keeping the puck out of our end. We lose a clincher by a poorly ruled goal being waved off. One game was a complete shambles for officiating. The two guys that moved on were non factors in the series, except in game 1.
  10. Those two players are likely to move for sure, but I don't think a 1st rounder does the trick. Barzal is a decent enough target, but we get hung up in the usual RFA issues with QO. And long term we have big re-signings ahead. We can look at lesser targets that do the same thing. Valimaki + for Dvorak. Future considerations for Roy. Monahan for a 2nd. All we really need is a C to play a 3C or 2C role here. We have excess D and not enough impact C. Should be looking to trade at least Valimaki and Mackey or Kylington or Hanifin.
  11. I think Lucic by himself is an incredible value. He's got $1M remaining to be paid him. He easily one of the more impactful $1M players available. Cap mirage for teams need to hit the floor. Doesn't have to bring back anything to really make this a win. We lose the toughness, but if needed we could bring in Klapka to start up things. Asking Lucic to do it in his final year seems selfish. Monahan for sure needs a new lease on life. We have given him everything we can and his best bud finally left. He would be an ideal mentor and 3C on a lesser team. Buffalo, Arizona and Anaheim come to mind. Immediately, it seems like we have a wealth of cap space. Well, we can do what we want in the off-season or hold off and take some cap from teams wanting to rid cap. Or use the cap at TDL. Losing two players hits out depth, but replacing them with real depth players moves us forward. Saying all that, Monahan could be a TDL deal for a team. We build him back up. Lucic has to be traded in that case. He kills Monahan's offense.
  12. Looking back at the trade, I am still a bit shocked that we get a top 4, possibly top 2 D in the deal. It seemed like more of an add in at the time, but when you think about it, FLA got robbed just due to Tkachuk's age.
  13. Kadri would be a good choice for a 2C, if he could be had for something like $6M x 4 or 5. He wasn't top C in COL and we don't need him to be top C here. We need secondary scoring. Set him up with Pelletier and Toffoli and you have a good mix of players. That is a short term win. But TDB, Kadri isn't settling for $6M in CGY, so we have to resolve it another way. No, we haven't replaced a RW spot of Tkachuk, but moving Mange there has the potential to replace his scoring. He won't get the high assist rate, but it likely could mean Lindholm scores 50 and he scores 40 with Hubie potting 40 as well. Okay, so that takes care of the top line LOL. If Kylington (or Hanifin) could be used to get a C like Dvorak, then we have a 2C. Younger than Kadri and cheaper. If we can trade future considerations or a lesser prospect to Vegas for Roy, then we have another option and still have all the D. Only Valimaki and Mackie are really excess that we can't afford. Perhaps we use Valimaki to get Dvorak. That is less of an impact on our D. If we go into the season and we find Kylington is more valuable to us than Hanifin, we do an in-season trade. RD are rated higher, so we might only get a solid 3rd pair RD out of the deal. Or we get a solid RW.
  14. If we could get him for an excess prospect, I think it's a win. A pick is tough to give up this coming year. Perhaps a B prospect and a 2024 pick. Patches went for future considerations.
  15. It's a tough call. The last two guys listed are fringe by Sutter standards, even if he referred to Mackey as near ready. But the biggest reason that Weeger was brought in was that we lacked a 2nd top 2D. There must be a belief that Hanifin is at best a 3/4. That puts him up against Kylington, who easily was one of our top D. I hate to give up on a potential top 4 long haul player like Kylington. Haven't seen more than one full season. Hanifin has been quite productive with Ras, but would he drop considerably with Tanev?
  16. Toffoli is dependent on the players with him. He's not bad defensively but I don't think we got him for that purpose. We played him with all sorts of different players but none were really what I call playmakers. On the PP, he was parked in the left circle but nobody got him the puck in a good spot. Thinking about what we have to play with him. Backlund is more of a carry in guy. Takes away Toffoli's shot chances. Lindholm and Hubie are both capable passers. Coleman is best on defense and transition. Dube is a forechecker and speedy puck carrier. Bread is a Cy Young type that doesn't get as many passes away. I have to think we either look for a pas-first C/LW or use a guy like Pelletier. Rozie "appears" to be a good passer but funnels a lot of shots at the net. Monahan and Lucic's best days are likely behind them.
  17. Naw, I have kinda walked back on Kadri. Too expensive too long. I'm sure he would be a good player for about 5 years maybe. But that also has zero to do with a trade. I think we have some different weeknesses in the playoffs. In round 1 it was scoring and winning draws and PP. In round 2 it was depth D and lack of secondary scoring. And a burnt out G from round 1. I would be fine with trading a D for a D that can pass through waivers. But that doesn't happen too often with good young ones. But if you look at our roster right now you can see a couple of holes. Two holes have putty blocking them from leaking.
  18. Maybe, but it depends on what they sign him for. I believe that an arbitration award walks him to FA.
  19. First off, I would like to say that if anyone has a player breakdown comp btween Dube and Mangiapane that helps pain Dube in a better light, that might help me get a better sense of his value. DOn't have to, it's my problem. Secondly, what does WPG have to offer to get Crouse? I think we could offer a player to get him. Just what we need another LW.
  20. As much as I like Dube, he's an enigma. Hasn't been able to grab the rings. Hasn't made a name for himself as a defensive specialist or a transition scoring guy. His minutes bounce around and he doesn't add much to his totals. Perhaps that is because he is not selfish and passes off. He hasn't really shown that he's a C or LW. He's looked good on RW for some reason. My issue is that he gets pushed off or knocked over too often. Mangiapane pops up and gets a 2nd chance, while Dube seems to end the play. I don't even know if it's him, his line or the routes he takes. All that in context, I just don't know where he fits in the lineup. What is his role. What do we need him to be. Trading him for a sideways move makes little sense, unless they feel they need a different style of player to work. Hard to tell with Sutter. In the playoffs he had one assist averaging between 13 and 15 minutes.
  21. I was a little reluctant if we hadn't got Weeger. Hanifin was the player CAR wanted to get rid of that entire season. I was actually okay with the way he played for us the last 2 seasons. But I don't see him being a top 2 guy. And he doesn't seem to get any better each year, just remains solid. His spot in the lineup means that he should be worth a top 6 C. If that was a top 3 RW, no problem, but I prefer a RHS C. A top 6 C means we can contruct a 2nd scoring line. Pelletier lessens the need for a middle 6 LW. We roll Ruzicka and Rooney with Lewis on the 4th line. Rozie can jump to the 2nd scoring line as needed or earned. A RHC C allow us to move them to RW as needed. I don't hate Hanifin, but we have to maximize assets. I don't see Valimaki being worth much other than for his age and perigree. Mackey has little trade value, but could be NHL ready. Meloche is just a depth guy that could prove to be decent enough. Hard to tell coming from SJ. If Kyl is the odd man out, whatever. Get the most you can.
  22. I wouldn't have a problem with 10x8. It's not a big deal to me. He could be easily worth that final year actual salary. I mean sure there is some risk that they don't re-sign, but I think that is limited. Show them you are willing to spend on the team to improve it. Not just on these two. Excess D? Okay, so bring in a forward. The country club has closed membership. No room to carry 10D and then lose a couple for nothing. We won't have the Tkachuk vs McD or Draisaitl antics. It will be more of best on best. And their best better show up. The last BOA of the season and first of the playoffs was embarrassing. We might still score 8, but I doubt they get more than 1 in that kind of game. We may soon be able to restart the Positivity thread up. Let's see what the summer brings with it.
  23. Sheltered and playing top 4 minutes with Tanev. Hmmm. Seems to me he was playing directly against McDavid in the playoffs. In 12 playoff games he only was a minus player in one game. Please tell me which games he was the reason why we lost. Every D-man has some warts, including Zaddy, who we just signed. Now, if you can get Chychrun for Mony + Hanifin + Kyl? Sure no problem. I'm not adverse to trading any of Hanifin, Kylington, Valimaki or Mackey. But I don't buy into the idea that Kyl is not worth it to keep.
  24. I don't know if I would sign him for the extra year. The only reason to do it with Gaudreau was to bring the AAV down a bit and to ensure he retired a Flame. In hindsight, had we been able to just sign Gaudreau for the extra year, we may not be talking about Gaudreau at all.
  25. This season seems to be another where the big money to a few leaves less for the little guys. Still quite a few guys waiting for arbitration and some regular RFA's unsigned but qualified. Also, Jonathan Dahlen. Decent numbers on a really bad team. Should be an expensive player to sign.
