  1. I think I can get on a lot of what the article is saying. I always had a problem with the shots for against argument most anal-ytics cling to. Russell is a decent D. When paired with Wideman, what do you expect? Plus, remember the first year he was in Calgary? We suffered really bad without him and then he came off injury and there was a noticeable difference. I think he is tops, a #4 D guy. But he'd be a great #5... but he will probably get paid as a #4...
  2. I was and have been worried about the player(s) we possibly gave up by trading our 1st for Hamilton in a deep draft. If we could shore up another top4 D for next season, I think I will be happy with what we have. Not having Hamilton makes me wonder where we'd be on D. I guess I am coming around in this one. How many dynamic players do we need? We have Johnny. Hopefully Mangiapane can develop into a complimentary dynamic player for lower lines. Right now i like how our Top6 forward pairs are shaping up. Gaudreau Monahan Bennett Tkackuk Pair the wings with a center. It is a matter of getting some speedy skilled enough wingers to compliment those lines. But I, like you , want another threat.

Is it time for the Flames to start Elliott? Has Johnson fell from grace? Or is it the team play? Again?

I think Johnson is a starter and this not not just a hot streak. Nothing in his game tells me it's a fluke or a streak. He goes about every play the same way, makes a 1st save, controls the rebound, and that's what you ask of a good quality starter. When you've been a career backup, what games do you usually have to play? The 2nd game of back-to-backs. Games where the team is tired. Plus the rthym is usually off, and the team doesn't know what to expect or have chemistry. Communication with the players is important. We are witnessing a goalie coming into his own.

It wouldn't surprise me if Gillies takes two more years to develop. Maybe one or two more year in the AHL. He could come up when he is 24 or 25. Is that considered a failure or good developing? Is it that we have bad developing or bad drafting of goaltenders?

They are calling an ex Oiler "probably" the 2nd best goalie in the NHL. I know he didn't become that, they did almost ruin him. The spot was there, but they also had so many other holes in their game that there was no way Dubynk would look good. Talbot is doing ok, but wouldn't they want dubynk now?

Exactly. I was just defending Johnson's play. I know that he had a lot to prove still, but he is playing really well, close to a #1.... i want to get Elliott going as well. I hope to get an even more intense battles between the pipes.

I think it's just too hard to judge. Even though the game has changed a lot recently, and in the time of Roloson. But he came into his own in his 30s and played competitively until he was 40. Even if Johnson is turning into a #1 - not saying he is, but it's possible - he could still have a lot in him... If it is only 6 or 7 years, that's still a pretty decent amount of time to be a starter, around 300 games.

Can't deny that he has been playing well for the past two seasons and it is possible that Johnson has just figured it out. Johnson is very calm and composed and uses his size to his advantage. He barely gets rattled and rarely gets out of position. For goalies it takes a little longer and the fact that he only played 115 games in the NHL tells me he had to pay his dues and figure out the game in the AHL.
  10. That probably does look a bit better. Gio seems to need Brodie though.

This is what I've been saying the last two years in here. We needed better goaltending. The goalie's we have are better than what we've had the last 3 seasons. It is the team D that needs to improve now.
  12. Play Giordano Hamilton on the PP. I just think everyone is trying to do too much now and it might be time to preach a simplified approach. Or are we going to get to game 55 and realize we are out and then all the weight is off the shoulders and just play? Then there is another false sense of improved play and only 10 points out of a playoff spot.
  13. And that's what I mean, to get into openings and positions is a skill. Getting into passing lanes is hockey sense. It is good to see. I was worried he wasn't progressing.
  14. Not saying Klimchuk will keep it up, but scoring opportunities are also products of the linemates and what scoring position he gets himself into. It probably means he is getting into good places.
  15. Until they change the way they pass, we can't tell what is going on. I think they have to preach some simplified pp.
  16. I like what you did there! But I think he's a bit of a bigger ( . )
  17. I actually always thought that was how Gaudreau's line always played, only they had higher percentage scoring chances. It really looks like Monahan and Gaudreau have never played on the same line before.
  18. The one thing I notice with the pp are the decisions made in forcing passes. It was the same with Hartley so I think it's a personnel issue more than the playbook. Paases are consistently being made through the other team's guys and it is easy to stop. It is hard to judge what is making it so bad.
  19. The PK may look better,. But taking penalties changes momentum.
  20. I've seen about 3 games all year. But the ones I did see, it seems like most are going through the motions, no great opportunities or big excitement. Sure they have the puck, but the scoring chances aren't high quality. The D still have mishaps that cost the game as well. Plus untimely penalties hurt us too.

I say see where he is at at the end of the year. Evaluate and let him fight for a spot in camp. He will earn it when he is ready. Could be two years, but he isn't super young with his college experience against young men.
  22. I would say for some of us, it was exposed a few years ago, but that year we made the playoffs it was in spite of the numbers, while goalies made key saves atvthe most opportune times. I've been preaching team D as a problem the whole time, and that lies directly on our offensive D guys. Teams are going to check the #1 line harder and I wonder if the offense will struggle because of it. It'll be imperative for the team to play picture perfect D in order to get wins. Do we have the D to do it?

I just wonder if the problem will be fixed by next year.?

I don't want to run with Gillies until the team improves the overall team game. It could ruin his confidence if he gets shellacked like we do now.

I agree Phoenix, plus I think it is asking too much to have the goalie always having to bail you out all of the time.
