  1. You might want to look up where Jankowski was actually playing before you throw a criticism in there that isn't valid. But agreed there was some bad process in there, most important of which was the size and breadth of the Flames scouting team at the time. Happy that's been corrected. It is fair to criticize the organization's scouting at the time for sure and I would too. It was getting better, but wasn't there yet. By no means suggesting the Flames were in good shape or handled that draft well because they didn't. Just that I think it should be pointed out that their evaluation on Jankowski was not near as bad as it's made out to be.
  2. Actually i said the opposite. I said Vasilevsky is the player that makes you scratch your head. I'm simply offering the possibility that it's likely the Flames didn't have a good read on him as they were not scouting Russia much at the time. I don't think passing on a few good, but not great players, makes it an all time bad decision nor does it mean they were way off on their evaluation of the player. It makes it a bad pick but bad picks happen all the time by every franchise. I wouldn't put Janko in the top 5 worst picks in Flames history, let alone call him an all time worst decision but if you want to go over the top by all means.
  3. What gets lost in the Jankowksi discussion, is you look at the actual analysis/scouting of the player I don't think the Flames were wrong on the player nor was Jankowski an egregious pick. Sabres traded up and took Girgenson. He's played more games sure, but in terms of their impact you'd be hard pressed to convince me he was a much better pick. He's had a better career than Grigorenko who was taken 2 spots before the Flames were picking. He was better than the number 8 and 10 pick in that draft. 30th in his draft class for goals. Outside of Vaslivesky who is the "OMG they passed on this guy?". Ceci? Hertl? Wilson? Good players sure but an egregious miss to take Janko over those guys? If you remove the hype and how the Flames handled him I don't think the Jankowski picks is near as egregious as it's made out to be by fans. It was a bad draft year. Obviously Vasilevsky is the outlier and I have no idea what led to them not liking him or having Janko higher. My suspicion would be is at the time they likely weren't well set up to be scouting Russia as that was pretty much ignored under Sutter but they clearly learned from that afterwards.
  4. I think lists should be arbitrary because not every team is looking for the same thing in terms of players, character, attitude, skill sets etc. This idea there there should be consensus when it comes to drafting is flawed and always has been. I'd much rather take a player that my scout(s) believe in or have conviction over than looking at some consensus list of watered down opinions. You'll win some and you'll lose some but IMO it is 100% the better way to go.
  5. Zary back in lines and working on PP2. Should be ready to return, or at least pretty darn close
  6. Vladar done for the year with hip surgery. Hope this means there is a plan to make sure Wolf plays down the stretch and they don't just hand the net back to Markstrom
  7. That is the joke though. Approach is the same but because the name is cool now we are good. I just find it funny.
  8. I've always viewed it that it was a ploy to try and get more money and perhaps Van was balking at it. The flames gave him a very rich deal for a 3rd rounder, it rivals what first round picks get. for reference Brzustewics got 950K total/year,a 95k signing bonus each year and 82.5K Minors salary. Porier, Flames 3rd rounder 2020 got 823k with 85K signing, 2 K less on his minors salary Gurshnikov, a 2nd rounder, got 814K, 92K signing bonus and 2K less on his minor salary Brz's deal is identical to what the Flames gave Honzek, their first rounder last year. Flames paid him very well for his draft status.
  9. I have no idea. I don't really prioritize position, I'd advocate BPA. I just think it's funny that a BPA approach that has led to LS wingers was criticized and now that same approach is cool.
  10. So to be clear after spending years ripping the Flames for taking LS wingers we are now good with them taking them again? Just trying to keep up
  11. Which I would agree with him on. The Flames are shallower at both the NHL and at the AHL level than the Canucks so there is more opportunity. Especially along the Right side. I'm not expecting to see him for 2-3 years.
  12. He actually didn't at least not in that article or any article i've seen. Even if he did he also says he's fine with AHL or NHL so i'm not sure where the controversy is here.
  13. Not sure how much weight the rumor held but he did comment that he is more excited about Calgary then Van. Don't think that means he can't play in the AHL and I also don't think for a second the Flames would have signed him with any type of promise. Calgary's blueline, post trade, is quite a bit shallower at all levels vs the Canucks so there is definitely more opportunity here at both the NHL and AHL levels. https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/flames-mailbag-what-to-expect-from-hunter-brzustewicz/
  14. Small clarification, Miromanov already has a contract. Signed right after they acquired him. So at the NHL level your looking: Weegar - Anderson ??? - Miromanov Okhotiuk - Pachal Hanley Really it hinges on Kylington. I think if he wants to keep playing the flames will sign him but there is a possibility he doesn't. If he's back then I don't see the need to pursue any UFAs. it's not a good crop this year so you'd be looking at stop gap types, signing someone to a 2-3 year deal or less to solidify. not sure I see the value in that when next year the focus should not be on getting better, but rather trying to see what you have. Don't get me wrong, not suggesting that is a good D core, it isn't, but I don't see many UFAs that are going to help much. If Kylington were not to re sign then that would change things and I think they'd need to target someone. People of interest to me: TJ Brodie Brett Pesce (althought a LS would be preferred) Alec Martinez Ghost Ian Cole not pretty....
  15. This one hurts me. Remember how excited I was when the Flames acquired him before the 04 run. He was a force during those playoffs and it was always sad to me his Flames tenure was so short. He was tough yes but he could impact the game in so many ways. More skilled then he got credit for. RIP. Pretty sad day.
  16. For the roster? why do anything. Remember there is no more roster limit after the trade deadline.
  17. It has also been said that Craig Conroy and Fitzgerald have a great working relationship. They worked together in USA hockey. And also NJ called about Saros as well as other goalies too.
  18. He needs waivers. Don't think the Flames would risk it. I don't think Gilbert views himself as an AHL player so keeping him up here is best for him too I think.
  19. Especially considering the GM made comments about feeling extorted.
  20. Your not locked in if the player doesn't work out, which most College FA don't.
  21. Probably don't want to lose anyone off waivers
  22. I'm not sure why Treliving has to come up so much around here. Everything seems to need to be Conroy vs BT and I don't get it. He chose to leave so let's move on with the new GM. I don't view this is as a Conroy error it's a front office error. European players have a later signing age (up to 27) due to the International agreement. That would be my understanding is that now they would be free to do a longer term deal if they wanted to. Not sure why they would though.
  23. September 15th has long been the date they use to determine signing age. That's a miss from the Flames. Not a serious one but they 100% should have known better. It sucks for the player because biggest different between ELC and SPC is bonuses. So the 95K bonus he was set to get is out the window. Be hard pressed to think this means he won't sign something with the Flames but it's not as favorable to him as it was before. But worth remembering the rules are the same for everyone.
  24. Not a surprise. Hasn't been very good since coming back from surgery and probably should have spent more time in the A post operation.
  25. 9th overall. at age 27 A 34 year old goalie is not going to net you a top 10 pick. Not unless the Flames want to add to the deal.
