2020 World Junior Championships - Flames prospects

Recommended Posts

Teams starting to be named. For the Flames:

Jakob Pelletier was named today to Team Canada's Selection Camp.  He's expected to make the team. Cool thing here is he's eligible next year as well.

Dustin Wolf should be on the roster. Not likely to play a role as Spencer Knight is the guy for Team USA right now.

Dimitry Zavgorodniy would have very likely made Team Russia but an injury will take him out of the tournament.

Demetrios Koumontzis did attend the US summer camp but was a cut. So on the radar, but would be a surprise if he was on the team.

Ilya Nikolaev also could sneak his way in there for Russia. He's having a solid season in Russia's Junior league but Russia is deep and tends to take veteran teams.

The rest of the Flames prospect who would be eligible but would be unlikely adds:

Lucas Feuk - Sweden

Josh Nodler - USA (good potential for next year)

Emillo Petterson was eligible to play for Norway in the D1 Championships but has chosen to stay in the NCAA and not participate.

Pelletier, Wolf, Nikolaev, Feuk and Nodler are eligible next year as well. Zav and Koumontzis, this is their last chance.

Was watching TSN last night when they did the Team Canada preview.

The guys they had ahead of Pelletier on LW was typical of TSN beliefs.

Must be able to play all 3 forward spots.

Must have a name that resonates with the public or is fun to say - Connor McMichael (actually he's killing it this year).

Must be 6' tall or more.

Yeah. McMichael is looking great this year.

Pelletier is as well though.

I missed that TSN segment, who'd they have ahead of him?

See link:

https://www.tsn.ca/hockey-canada/video/who-is-a-lock-to-make-team-canada-s-forward-group~1844709

On LW, BobbyMac has the following as locks to make the team:

Lefrenier

Foote

Foudy

Byfield

And the following dark horses in this order:

Holloway

Newhook

Pelletier

No player other than Lefrenier is outscoring Pelletier.  Even then, Lefrenier has the same number of goals.

On RW

Xozens

Dudas

Thomas

Team USA named this afternoon at 2PM Calgary time.  Dustin Wolf expected to be on it with Demetrios Koumontzis a maybe.  With Pelletier out looks the netminder could be Calgary's lone Wolf representative this year.

i'll show myself out.....

It's a shame that both Zav and Pelletier were injured before the final teams were named.

They would have been explosive for either team.

Somehow, Wolf will be lucky to play any meaningful games for USA.

He will have to play his way into the starter role.

Wolf officially named. He will be the only Flames prospect there.

Knight likely the starter though. Wolf will have to battle for starts.

they say the US groom goalies for the following year. They bring in a guy who they think will start the next Year. Maybe they give him a start or two to get the feel of the tournament so he has experience from this year to take with him next year.

i think it’s a good sign for next year.

fantastic tournament experience for him.  really happy about this, and nice to start behind Spencer too.  Less pressure more learning.

That's good.

I personally think he's better than Knight, but that's just my homer glasses perhaps.

Not super impressed with Knight's year to date.

1.71 GAA and .940 SVP and 4 SO's in 15 games for a freshman is impressive.  Thinking Wolf is better is fine, but Knight has some damn good numbers this year.

He's improved his number over the last month.

He's no longer getting blown out with 6 ngoals against.

If you check the goaltending thread, you would see his stats from when they were meh.

Besides, he's playing in Hockey East, not a powerhouse division.

He may turn out to be a good prospect, but I don;t look at college hockey as a great indicator of success.

Right. Gillies had fantastic numbers at the collegiate level as well.

IIRC, 930, 931, 930 over his career.

I was just saying that when I was looking earlier in the season he was like 913.

It's really hard to tell with the college kids.

They play once or twice a week and practice the rest of the time.

The CHL plays closer to a NHL schedule.

Demko looked good at BC, but you can't even say he is a bonafide backup at this piont.

Knight has 1st round status, so you never know.

Right now, I would say that Wolf is playing against superior talent.

I am curious to see who gets the meaningful games in the WJC.
