  1. There are a # of teams that have the talent & firepower with the skaters to be a contender if they had a top end goalie. Dallas is 1 example. Flyers & Jets are 2 more. We saw a top end goalie like Kipper steal games we should have lost not that long ago so should recognize the value of the position. The dang thing is you never know who will be the next to move from backup to star & which promising 1 plateaus. It's a crap shoot where you pay the $s & take your chances. Over paying for a current top ender works the same as what's clicking with his current team may not translate to a different system.
  2. Regardless, any A goalie should keep you in games & not need the team to score a lot to make up for weak goals allowed. Elliot allowed 12 goals in 4 games on only 100 shots. That's the worst of any playoff goalie while facing less shots than any other starter. We took 138 shots @ Gibson/Bernier & they stopped all but 9.
  3. Philly is in the same situation we are. They also have a couple of goalies in the system (Stolarz & Lyon) they are big on but aren't ready to be starters just yet. IMO Neuvirth was signed to be exposed to meet criteria. We have Riitch & Gilles waiting in the wings with McCollum as our sacrificial goalie. Either team can trade for Darling's rights so the 1 that moves 1st has the best odds of signing him (both cases 2-3 years would be ideal but 4 would probably be needed to keep cost down. All the UFAs know there are usually a lot of them available every year so term/stability comes into play. $4 x 4 trumps $5 x 2 & wondering if the next 2 involve backup money or AHL money.) As I've mentione the Jets will probably pursue him as soon as they can but with Hellebuyck & Comrie viewed as the future have to wait until after the LV draft if they want to protect Helly. With Elliott it depends on his ask. If it's backup $s he'd suffice but that's 1.5 per or less. I'd rather deal with Montreal or Vegas for Montoya & his 1.062 x 2. Elliot may give you 30 quality starts but is so inconsitent you can't rely on those coming when he's needed.
  4. As the teams I could cheer for without gagging fall by the wayside I'm going to have a heck of a time picking a team to root for in the 2nd round.

I'm going for Ottawa for Anderson, and St. Loo for Army. I don't have any problem with the Ducks now that it's vs the Oil.

Let's go Ducks! ugh. I am cheering for Washington tonight, and the Rangers to take out Ottawa. Calgary is the only Canadian team I want to see win the Cup.

I kind of thought that OV saying he was going to the Olympics no matter what, was a way to stick it to Bettman, so I like it.

  5. I doubt LV uses their 1 pick off the Hawks roster on a UFA. Like the other 30 teams they can just use $s. I think we can now legally trade a pick for Darling's rights as neither asset will be in the playoffs. I'd give some futures (picks in 2018 or a prospect) to Chicago for 1st right of negotiation to try to shut out other teams before the bidding starts.
  6. Darling is a Hawks asset until July 1. He appears to be the main target for the Jets so I was saying what Wpg. would likely offer (& why) as opposed to your low ball supposition.
  7. I'd make that my 1st offer but re-visit it since Wpg would likely offer 4.0 if it's only 3 years term (allowing Comrie to mature in the AHL & Hellebuyck to find himself as a NHL backup. If we're willing to pay Elliott 3.5-4.0 I'd rather take the chance on Darling.
  8. Not a chance Darling signs for $0.9 as many teams (including the Flyers & Jets will offer more). With his big chance to be a starter & get a payday he's not going for ELC money. Chicago will get a pick better than a B prospect just for right of 1st negotiation. Elliott's showing @ the begining of the season combined with his playoffs move him back to good backup territory. $2 million or less on a 2 year deal. As you said, you are going out on a limb but the 1 you picked has dry rot.
  9. They'd probably be very open to trading Crawford & keeping the younger Darling as Chicago is always shedding cap to ice a team. The 3 years @ $6 miilion is the snag as there are so many goalies looking for a team this summer & Crawford never gets his due as a top goalie. He has more SC rings than Price but isn't seen in that light. Thing is, why give up assets when you can get a goalie almost as good as a UFA for less $s.
  10. I have a good feeling about Darling being the next Talbot type going from backup to starter. From the local papers so do the Jets. The Flames have the upper hand if they trade even a conditional pick for the rights of 1st negotiation since we have 0 goalies to protect while the Jets need to wait until after the LV draft since they want to protect Hellebuyck & run him as b/u or in tandem. If we do trade for & sign him the next step should be trading for Montoya (2 years @ just over $1 million) as backup from the Habs or LV if they happen to select him (which I doubt as they'll probably pluck a skater off the Montreal roster).
  11. Nice. Just curious if there were any ties in Vernon's streak.
  12. But I remember @ 1 time you posted an assortment laid out like the instruments in an OR.
  13. There's that & the fact Kulstad mentioned something about wishing to swing the big hammer. Been a while so he's getting itchy. Carty knows the 1 I mean.
  14. Gee Carty, I'm taking that to mean it wasn't in the romantic sense we thought when you asked for the hostess to come alone.
  15. Minny can only lose 1 player. It'll be interesting to see who they expose. ******************************************************************************************* The NHL isn't answering if they'll allow the protective lists released to the media. If they don't I hope there's a leak by 1 team as they all get the list once submitted to allow for formulating trades prior to draft day. Seeing those will give us armchair GMs recommending moves BT should make.
  16. While watching the Flames & Jets tomorrow maybe do a little scouting of the young guys. The Jets have so many dang good prospects @ forward they'll have to trade a few to make room for those in the pipe like Roslovic & Connor. The honeymoon is almost over for the fans & some of the vets are getting antsy as well.

  17. I know how you feel. Until you posted a few the only visible comments were my last 4 or 5. Maybe nobody looks @ the sideboards anymore. I see it as a great place to put something that doesn't fit open threads but doesn't warrant a new thread. An example will follow in my next entry.

  18. The Flyers signed Neuvirth to meet the need to expose a goalie to LV since the only 1 they had under contract was Stolarz who they want to retain. If Neuvirth gets claimed that's great but if not he's a good enough backup. It sounds like they want Mason back but with the # of 'tenders looking for work it'll be a buyers market unless 2 GMs get into a bidding war. Why offer a contract of something like $5 x 4 now when the same player or equal might be available July 2 or 3 when the big offers aren't coming in. The Flames have the exposure need covered so I'd be fine with BT kicking tires & signing the 2 goalies that give the best bang for the buck.
  19. Anyone else have trouble accessing the message boards this afternoon?

Yes...   The boards were down for about half a day...

  20. I read an article in the Calgary Herald about this being the 40th anniversary of Slap Shot. I never knew that the original choice for Reggie Dunlop was Al Pacino. I can't imagine it with any one but Paul Newman.

    1. Carty

      Carty

Pacino would have made it an entirely different movie, that's for sure...   http://media2.giphy.com/media/9cbDzc591MSLm/giphy.gif

  21. So some are frustrated with iffy goaltending but prefer to stand pat because Elliott might improve. That's a pretty optimistic might. Is that the feeling in general? Don't take a chance on a replacement but take a chance with the current scenario.
  22. That does raise red flags. Probably better to offer a training camp invite so we can judge the intangibles that never show up in sportswriters profiles as you don't get those from stats. Scouts employed by teams look closely @ things like off ice behaviour & how he treats his billets (@ least the best 1s do).
  23. After an article I read about the Flyers goal tending an idea occurred. Flyers & Flames are both in a dog fight for a wild card spot. Neither has received great goaltending & both are running a tandem where none of the 4 are under contract come July 1. We talk of re-signing Johnson & the flyers will likely re-up Mason. Often a change of scenery benifits a player @ least in the short term. So how about a trade of Elliott for Neuvirth. Elliot is paid a bit more but not enough to matter. There could be an additional 2 players involved or done in a stand alone. I'm thinking Read for Stajan. Both are versatile up front & have 1 year left after this season. &s are also close enough to make little difference. If both deals are done the cap hit is almost equal.
  24. I see by the sidebar that it's yukonwolf's birthday. He was a good poster back in the day.

Happy birthday where ever you are Bud.
