  1. We've got 3 of 4 top D but no goalie. Given my druthers I'd rather have a dang good goalie rather than that 4th top D.
  2. Goalies are hardest to develop. Either they come in great like a Dryden or take years. Ortio trended upwards in meaningless games. How does seeing how he does in games that mean something early next season sound? You know, rather than anointing him our savior between the pipes.
  3. I hope some of you got in on the $35 tickets.

On the main page the Flames are advertising those.

  4. League average is 0.915. Wow! Ortio @ .908 sounds great (if you want to pick early). jj, we need a real goalie if we intend to go anywhere. Ortio might become a decent backup but as of now he's barely a good AHLer.
  5. 3 years without being drafted. Many teams (Jets come to mind) see college players as their future. Free development & walk away possibility if not up to expectations. I'd sign him & add him to the prospect pool but certainly not expect him to be an NHLer next season. College #s are suspect due to the fewer games played & different rules (closer to Euro hockey). Even AHLers are a of different mindset than a college kid. If the Flames expect to be within sniffing distance of the playoffs next year they need NHL caliber goalies. Teams can break in a few rookies every year as skaters but with only 2 goalies you want @ least 1 with a resume & hopefully the backup has played pro games @ some level.
  6. I agree. JJ's love affair with Ortio will disagree. JJ, Ortio is not that good. If he is he'll take a qualifier & go for the big pay day next time around. Right now he's still trying to prove he belongs in the NHL.
  7. The year before he was 0.915 with a GGA of 2.49. Sutter was familiar with what he was getting.
  8. I wonder if they are looking @ Backstrom as goalie coach/associate coach.
  9. 1) BT could ask Gaudreau & Monahan to take bridge contracts for 2-3 years with the big $s waiting @ the end to surround them with better players including a goalie that gives them a fighting chance to win. 2) I like both players too but really what have they done to earn a bump from EL to $7 million? We also did Johnny a heck of a good turn by burning the 1st year of his EL by playing him in that 1 game. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I saw a lot of posts about Trouba calling him down over a rumor (denied by both him & his agent) he wanted 6-7 long term as his 2nd contract. Does it make a difference if the $s are expected by a Flame?
  10. A lot of this thread seems to be posts about backups. Heck, some say go to camp with 3 or more backups & hope we get a 1A/1B tandem. Backups are easy to find every year but the Flames need is a starter. Unfortunately goalies are a roll of the dice. Last year's hot hand can cool or get injured. Out of nowhere a Tim Thomas is suddenly "Super Goalie". A Dubnyk goes from 0 to hero. Even past performance is little indication if hoping for youth. Few Gold Medal goalies on TC live up to anywhere near that. Anyone remember Jeff Glass? I figure the best bet is to trade for someone with a track record (preferably recent but looking @ Steve Mason since he hit Philly a reclaim can work) & hope his backup develops behind him & takes his job. We were pretty well gifted Kipper but we can't pin our hopes on that. Play the odds but keep your good luck charms handy.
  11. If Chevy stays the course with the kids (Kosmachuk is the 6th to play big league for the 1st time this year) probably a high pick or a left D prospect. BTW, if he does stick to that plan BT should put in a big offer for Wheeler. 5.6 x 3 more & the RW the Flames need. If the Jets go kids the NTC shouldn't be a problem. The cap might be but I can see Burke offering advice on how it could be done. Heck, if Smid retires on LTIR ala Pronger, etc. that's 2/3s of the cost. A buyout (or 1.05 retained on Raymond as that's the buyout x 2 but this way is shed in 1) takes care of most of the rest. Heck, retain 1.5 & trade a prospect in return & it's covered.
  12. Pavelac is only 28. Chevy & TN seem to have confidence in him. I find him frustrating as he can be lights out when playing up to his talent but the pits other games.
  13. I mentioned it as well. I think Hutchinsons RFA rights will be made available. He had good #s in the OHL, ECHL, AHL & has looked pretty good in the NHL.
  14. There is not a no trade rule in effect. Players can be traded (if someone wants Drouin he can be traded). They just can't play in the playoffs.
  15. Neurvirth was the hot hand recently but now it seems to be Mason. Mason rediscovered his form since coming over from the BJs & is well loved in Philly. Doubtful he's traded as he has been the 1st goalie in ages to play that well for the Flyers. Neurvirth is a fine backup @ 1.625 so the combo makes financial sense as the goalie pipeline looks pretty empty. I could see Neurvirth moved for the right offer & replaced by someone like Montoya but I'd rather the Flames go for Montoya as backup as he'll probably come in a bit cheaper but I see him as more reliable.
  16. All charges were stayed in the Mike Richards court case after all these months. That means no record. Expect the Caps to re*sign him as Trotz really likes him.

So how does that affect Mike's NHLPA appeal of the dismissal? They turfed him because of the events.

      Flyerfan52

The appeal was settled. LA gave him $s & he along with the NHLPA accepted. He's just trying to rebuild his career & under Trotz is in a good place for it. He won't be an Olympian again but will likely be 1 heck of a depth player. The kind you want on the ice when it's late & the score is close.

  20. I'm looking forward to that Young Stars prospect tourney. Real hockey with all teams young players trying to impress the brass. Beats the heck out of football or any other sport.

  23. Correct. Last year @ this time the Flames were an unhearalded bunch expected to be closer to the McDavid sweepstakes than even close to a playoff berth. They were also short of the floor so overpaid a few players like teams in that situation normaly do. Gaudreau was expected (@ least by us on the board) to need @ least a year in the AHL to adjust if he ever made it. Monahan might/might not have the dreaded sophmore slump. Depth on the farm was an unknown. The progress of the name kids & the unknowns (let's face it, few if any expected what Brodie did) showed that the cupboard was fuller than the paper roster led us to believe. Combine that with a "don't care what the talking heads say about us, we can win" attitude & it did make those signings redundant. Adding Hamilton & Frolik makes us even better. If Sam Bennett can play like he did when he finally got to play it's another huge plus. Especially with the 3 California teams looking weaker & the Canucks looking confused we are setting up well for the Pacific. I'd love to dump 1 or all of those place holder contracts but for now we can live with them.
  24. If called up due to injury I'm pretty sure we can play him while the injured goalie is on IR & doing a reconditioning stint in the minors & send him down without waivers. Teams can call up players from juniors on emegency basis without burning a year of EL under certain conditions so logically the same would appy here. That or St. Louis.
  25. Yep. But Boston would be disappointed if Dougie Hamilton becomes Duncan Keith. Griffin Reinhart is 21 so can still turn into a top 2 for the Oilers. Kipper was 27 when he came to Calgary & is a Finn. Ramo is about the same age & nationality but your reasoning is a stretch. Gio was 26 before he started rounding into form so do you want to stock up on undrafted D, hold onto them for a few years of minor league duty, see them go KHL & hope they've grown into the next Gio?
