  1. You made me think of Ken Dryden. Only after getting his degree did he decide to play pro hockey. Being a student of pretty well everything he watched Tretiak work on his reflexes in the hall way when they were both in the '72 Summit Series (aka Super Series) & incorporated it into his own training. Forgive my attempt @ coining a phrase but I'd say he "trained & brained" his way to 5 Vezina trophies & 6 SCs. Hard to believe he only spent 8 years as an NHLer. He had impressive size (especially for his era) but I see his targeted training regimen ( in a day when players didn't train during the summer so training camp was a quick boot camp to shed that beer muscle) as the biggest reason for his success.
  2. The ? is whether the Flames are ready to turn him pro immediately. Once he signs that contract his college career is over. If you draft a college player you own his rights but unlike a signed junior remaining eligible US colleges are strict about their players being amateur or (@ least give that appearance ).
  3. Same thing happened with Phillipe Myers. 30 teams passed on him 7 times in 2015.After a training camp invite he was signed by the Flyers only 3 months later. It sounds like getting a pre-pick for the next draft as most juniors do re-enter the draft. Few work out but it's a no cost chance.
  4. They have been but I've noticed that seems to go in cycles. PQ used to produce most of the top enders, communist Russia as the USSR did so for a while I've noticed the USA is a good source (remove Cary Price & Canada doesn't have 1 that can hold a candle to a # of Americans). I'd give Vehvilainen a bigger vote of confidence because he already plays against men but after seeing Laine & Puljujarvi said to be pretty much equal I have less confidence that it makes him pro ready. Remember Halley Wickenhauwer played in a men's league & that the Women's TC regulary kicks Canadian college men's teams butts using them as a warmup. ******************************************************************* It depends who is available when we pick but I certainly wouldn't hold on to a pick with his name penciled on it if that pick could be used to help sooner & long term (the D from the Ducks & Wild still occupying my thoughts).
  5. 1st year eligible for the draft so we'd have to draft him. Seldom do goalies go high but in a year where the skaters are considered decent but no stars chancing a higher than normal pick would be in order. The stigma of 6-8 years development has been shown up by guys like Rath. By the 2nd round he could be gone. With another year playing against men (under contract there) he could be ready sooner. The converse is the list of Team Canada WJC 'tenders who were good in junior & the WJC but a complete flop in the pros is long. I've already advocated trading our 1st & 2nd rounders but if he's hanging around in the 3rd (which I doubt) I'd chance it.
  6. The goal rush & points in the stats column continue. Next up is removing the position designation so all 6 skaters are rovers. If that doesn't lead to a large enough increase in scoring next they'll revert to the pond hockey ploy of my youth where the fattest guy on each team is goalie. Since there will be little equipment you have to count on his bulk to cover the net. Goalie equipment was getting way out of hand as to size but a big change should be brought in midseason so the 'tenders can practice in & acclimatize to the new stuff. I rather think there should be a corresponding change in the skaters equipment. Top of mind is those weapons grade elbow pads some are so proficient with. Geordie Howe (Mr. Hockey) was famous for his use of the elbow but his pads were leather & wool meaning he felt every impact almost as much on the recieving end.
  7. Thanks guys. Such a minor signing I forgot about him.
  8. I'm thinking the same applies in Winnipeg. Loyalty is nice but in both cities we see goalie graveyards.
  9. We've talked about acquiring goalies & re-signing Johnson but 1 thing I'm still wondering about is what happens if we remain without a goalie that meets conditions for the LV expansion. Do they get to pick 1 of our prospect Goalies? It wouldn't make sense for us to give up assets for 1 goalie only to have to expose him. If we do find 1 that's a fit I hope BT pulls someone like Ramo or Emery off the scrap pile on a cheap 2 way for next season so we have someone to expose.
  10. Since my last was months old I decided to update. We can play better & will. Kick it into playoff gear a tad early Flames!

      Carty

Agreed, they can and will play better...   GO FLAMES!!!

  11. Eh, I'm more impressed by your 1938 likes.
  12. Those 115 games are spread over a 6 year period. 4 games in Phoenix 4 years ago really drove his SV% up.
  13. That depends on if the GM loses his mind July 1 or waits for the market to settle. Players signed as little as a week after the initial frenzy come @ a more reasonable cost/contract.
  14. Hammond is on waivers. Any interest?
  15. That was a strange aberation as Montoya is usually 1 of the best backups in the league. Even now he's 3-1-1. ********************************************************************************************* Did any one see Max Domi drop Kessler with 1 punch? I didn't see the game but caught that @ the SN site. Kessler is an ex-Canuck but I still don't like that (.).
  16. Happy birthday Sheri. :)

She can still count on me to escort her to her seat.

  17. Hearing Bishop is available. So is Pavelec with his 1-0-1, 2.89 GAA & 0.918 SV%.
  18. Or we could make DL very happy & prorate the season. Canucks go 82-0. ************************************************************************************ Let's just give all the teams a participation banner & award all trophies to every player eligible by position based on their best minutes only. That way nobody feels left out (). From game 1 forward all games are funsies so no need for a scoreboard. & every player can be a superstar. No man left behind you could say. Imagine contract negotiations. Agent: My client is a Calder & 3 time Norris winner averaging 82 goals a season. GM: So is every D his age. Some had a prorated average of 80 G & 82 A.
  19. Prorating SV% & GAA average by excluding a bad game is like prorating points over a season had the player remained healthy or been more than an injury replacement with a few good games or 2nd assists. That's fantasy hockey.
  20. He's already passed you & is closing in on me. I remember when I joined the Flyers board many moons ago we required about 200 posts to start a topic. I had no burning need to start any as there is usually some existing thread that covers the point (saving the mods from having to keep merging them) but the old hands advise on posting in toyland (general conversations/off topic stuff). In those days they were fun 1s like trivia & the like (it was 1 of the more active boards) but for me the object was fun. Last change over (password thing) I didn't care about my count. I just wanted my name, avatar & signature back.
  21. What did you do with the horse hair when you groomed them? & was Bambi shot only so you had goalie pads or did you eat the meat? You know I'm lmfao but the kids will wonder.
  22. So as not to give any goalie an advantage as to his team's colors I figure the new goalie equipment should specify brown only pads. & those pads be filled with horsehair like the greats including Terry Sawchuk, Glenn Hall, etc. wore. (Maybe)
  23. Top Flames prospect. I rather like Hellebuyck, Hutchinson & Subban more.
  24. In the NHL a big (but not only) part of winning is goaltending. Average goaltending > horrible & gives a chance to win games. If skaters aren't playing in fear of the 'tender giving up a goal every time they haven't got got the puck on their stick they feel freer to pass the black disc. That only increases scoring chances & it's easier to protect a lead than play from behind trying to catch up. & if Ortio is your backup you better pray your goalie never suffers an injury. Think back to the Kipper days when players gripped their sticks tighter & wore grimaces every time anyone else was in net as they were scared the smallest mistake would lead to a GA. A reliable goalie has brought Chicago & LA Stanley Cups. I'd argue neither is a top 10 but the confidence the players have in them turns the trick.
  25. FFS. do you not understand that we went from horrible goaltending to what appears to be @ worst average! Ortio was & still is a 0. Other teams didn't even sign him as a backup for their AHL club. 30 GMs didn't think he'd be handy to have as a 4th option if in dire need. Ortio just isn't that good!
