  1. Like all others Copley isn't UFA until July 1. So he meets the exposure requirement. Grubauer needn't be exposed so might as well get something rather than expose him along with Copley unless you value less than the return & the player you expect to lose. (BTW, I'd give up a mid range 1st this year for Grubauer)
  2. Happy birthday 420

    1. Carty

      Carty

Happy Birthday 420, hope you have a good one...

  3. The problem with that arguement is that Washington could sign someone like Ray Emery in the month left to expose. That's a backup plan if Phoenix Copley doesn't meet exposure regulations (I believe he does). The Caps pocket a fairly high draft pick or @ lest decent player/prospect (more than worth it) rather than lose Grubauer for nothing.
  4. That's why I'm for slightly downgrading our forward talent for more heart & upping our D. With a better D & goalies it wouldn't cause hearts up front to drop going down a goal. When we had Kipper & an excellent D every game was viewed as winable. It was only when his backup (unproven because they were spectators) would let in a goal (soft or hard) that they were demoralized. With a proper tandem where 1 was a starter & the other believes he can be (isn't behind Holtby or Lundqvist) there shouldn't be that fall off.
  5. I see the prospective goalies as "birds in the bush" as we won't be sure any will ever be a starter. Therefore I want the "bird in the hand" to be more than a bridge. I lean towards a current backup (Grubauer, Raatna) as they are somewhat proven but #2 behind a top 5 starter. I do want to shelter my bet a tad with a goalie with more starts & let the duo duel it out for the starters reins. If we get MAF & a current b/p @ under the cost of that b/u & a UFA like Mason/Elliott I go for it but refuse to overpay just for the hope Fleury is the bridge & that our prospect is the next Price/Holtby/Rask/Rinne/Kipper.
  6. Actually they aren't. The team in front of the goalie has a huge impact on the # of shots that make it through & the quality. A defensive team allows less shots against but the corollogy is the 1s that make it through are higher quality/better %. Stopping 50 low quality 1s is easy but stopping 10 high probability 1s is harder. That's why I harp on a stronger defense even if we upgrade in net. Ideally I'd like every forward to buy into team defense but with our roster that's unlikely so I want the 1s that do to realize that dedication is noted. ****************************************************************************************** Strange but I've been reading the St. L fans are harping on JBo for not being offense oriented enough. De vu of what I used to read in threads here.
  7. Murray in relief has a shutout happening. That's right, a shutout.
  8. Don't be so harsh. He did stop 5 of 9 shots.
  9. Elliott cost 2.5 x 1 with a 2nd (& a conditional 3rd where I hope the conditions aren't met). Fleury will cost 5.75 x 2 & acquision price (even if another 2nd or 3rd) over twice the $s & double the term. I wouldn't do that kind of double down @ a casino as I view it as a sucker's bet. I'm talking small money when I bet & it affects only me. BT is betting big $s & it affects the makeup of a $75 million team.
  10. Where does he rank those years in the playoffs?
  11. Yes but you also weight the cost of the risk. MAF @ 5.75 x 2 & acqisition cost is betting heavy that he has more ups than downs & that his backup can cover the downs better than say Mason, Elliott or 1 of the current backups stuck behind a Holtby or Lundqvist would @ $4 while leaving more $s for a better backup. I'm not willing to give up much to take that chance. If the Pengies are ready to retain even a million I'd be more willing to give up something. If not I'd rather go with someone else rather than over paying for a name goalie that will be 33 shortly after the season starts. His stats are barely average but his salary is far above.
  12. True enough. The other 2 possibilities would be Winnipeg but Chevy again said the Jets are protecting Hellebuyck so it wouldn't be until after the draft which is too late & Philly where the Pens would ask much more so Hex would tell them to stuff it. I'd actually take Vegas out as well as unless Pitts is willing to lose both the 1 LV selects & MAF there is little incentive as Vegas also knows they are in a bind. McPhee could also risk MAF not waiving & Mario wanting to avoid the bad PR of buying out a lifelong Pen that's carried them to the ECF this playoffs (& Lemieux could well step in) so wait for Murray. Whatever the Pengies finally decide they have only the time between when their season ends & June 21 to decide & sign a different goalie to expose. If MAF is the 1 to go a 3rd looks pretty good if it's the only offer. As far as Backlund I'd save him for a different trade. I still want another D regardless of what goalie we add so still look @ Columbus as our best bet (other conference is a reason for us & the other team giving the D) with NYI a tad behind.
  13. I'd love to have Rask but 7 x 4 we can't afford.
  14. I agree on Mason. Like Elliott he has off games but when he's on he's much better. The rumors I hear about him though are that Hex intends to re-sign him @ a slight discount after the ED to avoid protecting him. Sounds like the Flyers are likely to start the same tandem unless a better option comes up before LV makes their picks. IMO Schneider is probably more possible after the Debbies won the lottery draft. As you mention in another post NJ has a goalie pipeline again (something they did.t need when Brodeur was playing) & adding a teenaged center doesn't make them a contender. Trading Schneider now should fill a few of their many holes as they'll want youth rather than vets to get players ready about the time 1 of Wedgewood/Blackwood is ready.
  15. I'm of the opinion that an upgrade is preferable & with the glut of goalies available now & after July 1 BT should wait for a good deal & then swoop in. For now those are unlikely to be the name starters but a few of the proven understudies like Grubauer, Raanta, etc should be available. By getting 1 now we've got @ minimum the back half of a tandem & possibly 1 ready to start. Those won't be available after the draft. After July 1 @ least 1 goalie to fill the other 1/2 will be available given the few probable landing spots. It could be Elliott or 1 better or @ least equal & the want to stay in the NHL as @ least a probable starter lessens the contract expectations. Unless a Holtby, Rinne, Price is suddenly being shopped in a misguided house cleaning it appears a good, safe way to approach knowing we get @ least the 'tending that fell short last year.
  16. I'm hearing a lot of chatter about the Flyers & Jets adding Elliott on a 2-3 term as their "goalie(s) of the future" get a bit more experience. Just long enough that 1 can mature then tandem & take over as starter. The $s in both would reflect that so probably in the 3ish range. I think CJ has accepted his role as backup. He seems to prefer it be as a Flame. Didn't he build his retirement home in Calgary?
  17. LV (or any other team) can make trades for players now. Even the playoff teams can but the player(s) obtained can't play this season. Darling or Bishop were only UFA rights as their teams were already eliminated but the contracts are in place until July 1. Had they been traded to a contender they would be on the payroll (cap doesn't matter in the playoffs) but couldn't play. So LV could trade anything Benning accepts for the Sedin clones if they waive.
  18. But every team he put as allowable (18 btw) is/was to him an acceptable landing point. The gist is MAF can not be traded without agreeing to waive. He could be asked to go to a top 4 team in the playoffs, say no, be bought out pocketing 2 x 4 million & sign any where for 4-4.5 gaining a raise as he does so. I don't know Fleury's mindset but since he's the guy with SC rings I assume he's as adverse to being told "do this because we told you to" without feeling resentment. In my case I'd say that I gain nothing so make it worth my while. The only way Pitts can do that is to force the buyout. In that case he s, pockets the $s & laughs whenever his new team beats the Pens. Agreeing to waive isn't "taking 1 for the team" as he wouldn't be part of that team anymore. Especially if they ask him to undergo another rebuild as he waited out the Pens well planned dive to the bottom for Crosby & Malkin (could have been OV but the balls didn't fall in that order that year).
  19. This won't happen but would make me lmao. Days after the Sens eliminate the Pengies they trade MAF with slight retention to LV. Then when they submit the list of draft eligibles they realize they have only Murray to expose. Too late to do anything about it so LV picks up Murray as well. Now Pitts goes from 2 NHL goalies to 0 & hunts for a new tandem. Then (for a further ha-ha) McPhee trades the retained cost MAF to the Pengies cross state enemy for a 2nd to replace the lost 1. Unlikely chain of events but it would make my day. ******************************************************************************* Re: the high lighted do you mean Connor Hellebuyck? He's more or less dropped to a 1b hope while Eric Comrie is the hope for the Jets future starter.
  20. Exactly! After carrying the mail for the Pengies in goal his whole career & then being forced out he owes them nothing. Forcing a buyout puts almost $2 miilion a year in his account for 4 years. @ 32 he can count on some team offering him @ least 4 for a few years. Kind of double dipping the $s but he has nothing to lose. Those that say he'd be a starter in LV don't account for the fact he'll be the starter on any team signing him as UFA. He was the 1st payoff in the Pens as they deliberately sucked in a well timed tank that added Malkin & Crosby while biding time in the minors. Rather than go through a build from nothing scenario again (& being older with less career years left) he could be the starter on a team that is either a contender (Calgary) or on the bubble (Winnipeg) while pocketing more cash. Fleury gains nothing by waiving only to end up in LV (& if he has a urge to play there the buyout $s on top of what they offer as UFA are still better for him). What can the Pens offer him to waive?
  21. The Vancouver like decision to keep Luongo over Schneider since that's where the offers were? Only to trade him as well & in desperation sign a Miller type.
  22. CapFriendly has the break down. Like many UFA sighings last summer it's very signing bonus laden. 13.5 of the 19.5 is those bonuses. Sure looks like the agents & players are expecting another stoppage.
  23. Even if they are willing to lose Jarry they can still only protect 1 of MAK or Murray. I doubt LV will go to their 3rd goalie unless Pitts gives them a top 3 forward to back off & their best 4 have MNCs. BTW, Jarry seems to have a hard time adjusting to playing pro. Average @ best but every team has those they hope to groom into a starter. His 1 NHL game was a throw away season finisher with pretty bad stats. I want someone that doesn't look like a deer in the headlights playing against men. If we go with a kid I want 1 that has @ least been a backup in the NHL or played against men in the Euro leagues (where they see a lot of rubber).
  24. I read today it was an adverse "reaction to medication" given him to deal with a concussion. Expected to be ready for training camp. I've taken prescriptions that rather than fix a problem laid me out so it's not something that scares me. If it worries new GM Botterill (I expect it won't as his dad is a Dr./sports therapist) we can maybe get him a bit cheaper.
  25. 1 of the best 22 year old goalies on a particular team. For 1 year he was that! What you were offering rebuilds the Pengies in 1 fell swoop. Way too much. Pitts is in a bind depending what MAF does. If he refuses to waive they can buy him out @ 1.9 x 4 cap hit which isn't chump change for a team with 15 players (without Fleury) & after a buyout about 16 to fill those spots. Schultz & Dumolin will take a big chunk of that so that leaves callups that they can't afford to have hit bonuses. If MAF does waive it comes down to what the market offers given a glut of goalies with only a few teams in the market. Retention on salary gets a better return but also cuts into cap space. Offers @ full price likely = a 3rd after the GMs check out the UFA market which is after the LV expansion so Pitts isn't driving the bus if they intend to keep Murray. Murray's new contract is 3.75 x 3. Given the # of goalies slated to be looking for jobs you can get 1 with a bigger body of work in that range for nothing but the money. Highest I'd go is this year's 1st or go after someone else. If left exposed LV will take him & likely keep him but with a gentle nudge be persuarded to take Grubauer &/or Raanta/Hellberg as well making 1 available. Other options like the decision in Detroit have been mentioned. The worst thing we could do is fixiate on 1 goalie & overpay. Especially in a buyers market.
