  1. Murray is 22 & proven. Gilles is 23, unproven & could become what Murray already is.
  2. With a short 2 way contract I figure it's worth the gamble. (On either). Nothing ventured, nothing gained. For Koskinen the NHL was 9-10 years ago when he was a child but @ close to 30 with a good record in the more "run & gun" KHL likely worth taking a chance on. I'm suggesting either as a backup but if he adjusts fast to the NA game @ least a 1B. They are both mature & around the age some hit their prime.
  3. 1) I expect the return to be about a 3rd due to decreased # of teams looking for a starter combined with the NTC. 2) Most likely 3) Doubtful. It's still in conference. 4) Buffalo isn't that good. Some good pieces but not enough. Ristolainen would bring them a bonanza in good parts (I could see the Jets giving up Connor, Roslovic & sending back Myers). If they could trade 1 year of E Kane for 2 years of Eberle they get closer. If Okposo would waive that NMC the Flames should give up a lot for him. IMO better than Oshie & already signed @ 6 x 5 (also a year younger) . By a lot I mean Backlund & 1st in 2017 & 2nd in 2018. (If they want we can throw in Bouma @ no extra return )
  4. About as well as Elliott did early in the season. Good reflexes.
  5. There are better goalies with 0 SC rings. Price is 1, Lundqvist another. Going down that road Eric Fehr has a ring while Iggy doesn't.
  6. The big $s doesn't apply unless he's bought out. Otherwise the 2 remaining years on his contract (5.75 in cap & real $s) apply. **************************************************************************************** Does anyone think we should offer the Hero of France a 2 year, 2 way contract? He's 33 & I don't know much about him other than this IIHF Worlds but his play against Finland & now Canada impresses. Florian Hardy is of course the 1 I mean. Due to the short seasons in Europe he might be an off the wall pickup for backup. Best case we get a late bloomer like Thomas. Worst case we send him to the ECHL on the cheap.
  7. He's also playing on bigger ice & under the more stringent IIHF rules. More ice, more room to maneuver. IIHF rules less hits, hacks, etc. again causing more room to maneuver without fear. Maybe instead of getting him other linemates until there is a fit we could lobby the NHL to go to international rules & ice.
  8. & the most valuable assets (top 6 centers & top 2/3 D) aren't going to be exposed to LV. Their best bet is load up on #4 Ds (@ least some would be 2/3 on teams weaker on D) & goalies. Keep what McPhee sees as the best 6 D & best 2 goalies & trade others for assets. Heck, trade 2 of the best 6 & 1 ofthe best 2 goalies for forwards to balance things. LV actually has a crack @ being middle of the pack with a lot of the also rans that were close to a wildcard. With the brain trust in place I expect them to vie for a playoff spot but miss by "this much". (Said in a Maxwell Smart voice.)
  9. We'd be deeper but I don't even imagine he'll sign with Calgary. Trying to be realistic I'm still for going after 1 of Carolina's excess you D (any 1) or Murray off the BJs roster. In the west odds are Nashville protects 4 D but Anaheim & Minny have a harder choice. If either decides on protecting their 7 forwards the 4th best D they trade or expose is my target. The Jets it's iffy but I feel they'll go the 7-3-1 route meaning Myers is available. The injury & personal problem last year doesn't worry me.
  10. Ryan Murray is 23 & has 1 year left @ 2.825 then RFA. Expendable in Columbus with Jones, Johnson, Werenski, Savard, etc. They need youngish forwards. What can we offer?
  11. Howard @ 33 has had some injuries but when playing is good. I'll take that over a 32 year old career backup like Elliott that runs hot & cold. Especially if the price is similar.
  12. It could but costs being even I go with the more proven.
  13. Or they could retain for 2 years bringing his hit down to $4 million. Less $s, less cap hit & makes Howard affordable enough to return assets.
  14. I've read that on a few hockey sites. With Darling out of the picture I'm hoping 1 of Hextall, BT or Chevy goes after Holtby or Grubauer (which ever the Caps trade as they can't protect both). All 3 teams have prospects in the pipeline but none are (IMO) ready for the big time yet. If LV claims Neuvirth the Flyers will probably bring up Stolarz as b/u but looking for a starter. Jets have Hellebuyck to serve as b/u as they bring along Comrie but Helly proved he's not ready to be the main guy. The Flames are in the unique position where we have neither a starter nor b/u. There is talk here of trading for Bishop's rights to gain early negotiation time. I wouldn't give LA a dang thing as BT has a pretty good idea of what he'll ask. With Carolina out of the picture the available landing spots where a goalie can realistically expect to be a starter got smaller. With LV in the picture there are probably 5-6 spots for the proven starters/former backups ready to start but more supply than demand. If BT doesn't over react he can land a starter & b/u @ less than initial ask. LV will likely draft theirs rather than go the UFA route since @ least some of the b/us exposed will be assets. TB decided to stay with the younger goalie & Pitts is likely to do the same. Washington could go either way. There will be plenty of goalies to go around so it's a matter of $s & how long you figure you'll need him. Dallas is likely the only 1 looking to sign a long termer rather than 1 to bridge until their own prospects are ready. If Bishop is the target & wants 6-7 years but only Dallas offers that so be it.
  15. That's what he is. Unless he has a Tim Thomas turn around what we saw is what we get. Streaky (nice way of saying unreliable) so you have no idea if you are getting the good (not great) Elliott any given night. We need better. *************************************************************** BTW, Johnson & an AHLer (Comrie) seem to be the b/ups for TC. Was Elliott invited but turned it down? That's just a question with no hidden meaning as I'm curious. The question is probably moot as TC will probably upgrade 1 of the 2 when round 2 of playoffs end. I doubt Talbot or Holtby has the energy left but Jake Allen might get a phone call.
  16. Darling signed. $16.6 over 4 years. No idea what teams would have offered July 1 (I figured around $4 depending on term) but for only the cost of his lowest of 3 picks in the 3rd I figure Francis made a good call.
  17. I'd count out the prospects (& maybe be even picks unless Francis wants to keep restocking in case of other trades) so vets (with @ least part of their salary) up front are the best to offer for a team like the Flames. They'd probably like someone like Bennett. I'd do it for any of Faulk, Slavin, Hanifin but only if we don't get them for players we deem more expendable. Adding cap is easy. Just offer high on the top ender UFAs like Oshie. With Ron Francis as GM & Rod Brindamour as associate coach you have 2 guys that lead their own NHL teams & see the value of the intangibles which is why I could see them taking on Stajan &/or Brouwer.
  18. I should have put Hanifin in a different paragraph as the Canes don't really have to trade any D but do have a surplus of good, young 1s. What they do need is forwards (Darling probably solves the hole in goal with 1 of the 2 currently under contract being the backup) & they have the cap space to add a few via UFA &/or trade. I wonder if our 1st in 2017 & Brouwer (some salary retention if needed) for leadership would interest them. Alternately sub Stajan (no retention) for Brouwer for the same reason. I'm not even sure if our 1st would tempt them as they have a pipeline filled with ELCs.
  19. They could go either way. If it's the 8 players protected that means 1 of Perrault or Lowry is exposed. If they go 7-3 it depends on Enstrom waiving his NMC for that last year or Myers is odd man out.
  20. The fact remains the Flames have 3 NHL defense under contract. 3! Does anyone want the rest filled by tweeners/rookies? We need to sign/re-sign @ least 1 that is 4/5 worthy but I'd prefer 2 as I really don't want a 3-4 rookie mistakes on the back line @ at time. We have the rights to Stone who fits the bill but doesn't have a case for much of a raise so pencil him in @ something like 2-2.5 x 2 or 3. Shattenkirk is the top UFA D-man but has expressed a desire for the NY area (that means any team in the Met) & more $s than he's worth so scratch him off the list. Alzner would be nice but again he'll get more money than his worth. Kulikov the same. We know Russell too well to spend $4 million on him. Markov & Oduya will probably sign value contracts to keep playing & would be good trade bait @ the deadline but I'm not excited to see either play hard top 4 minutes. For the season before the deadline sends them to a contender they'll want the easier travel in the east. I'll stay with a familiar in suggesting Del Zotto. ************************************************************** Although my 1st choice to add that top 4 is to dangle our 1st+ to Anaheim/Minnesota/Carolina for 1 of the D they can't protect. Other teams with midling picks will likely do the same but with 3 kicks @ that we should be able to land 1. Any of Fowler (4 x 1 before UFA), Dumba (2.255 x 1 then RFA) or Hanifin (ELC 0.925 & then RFA) suits me. In division makes Fowler unlikely while even in conference works against us for Dumba but Hanifin is the youngest, there is no conference extra demand & the Canes have a full pipeline @ D so probably our best chance. Obviously we need a goalie but the better the D we put in front of him the better he looks. Especially if all skaters realize team D shouldn't take 2nd place to scoring stats for individuals. Even little Gaudreau has to fight to gain a puck. With almost $22 million in cap space & whatever salary we lose in the draft I'd budget 8 for a pair of goalies, 8-10 for 2 defense & whatever is left for forwards as there are always budget 1s available when the smoke clears after the frenzy. We can bridge Bennett, Lazar & Ferland pending more cap space to come.
  21. Wait until July 2nd if going the UFA route. By then Bishop (if the target) knows he's not worth any team breaking the bank on a long term/big $ contract so would have to consider reasonable offers. The others not signed on frenzy day also have to lower their ask as they aren't as in demand as their agent hoped. If it's via trade once the playoffs end teams like the Pengies & Caps have to decide which of their tandem they protect. The 1 they decide on & the ask for the other determines if it's worth assets to add 1 of the 4 possibles. There are likely 30+ goalies that will be looking for a starters role with maybe 6 teams looking to sign 1. Getting caught up in a frenzy results in a Bryz situation (stupid Homer) while better goalies signed for less. Teams still have a choice in their shopping so there is no reason to extend Elliott (& give up the pick) or Johnson as there are as good or better looking to be 1 of the 60 getting NHL wages. Pavalov doesn't want to go back to Europe so is a $1 miilion option as a hungry backup that used to be a starter & would like to be 1 again. In a buyers market patience is the key. Maybe Bishop came across as wanting too much which combined with what TB wanted in compensation gave BT pause so he went cheaper in hopes Elliott was ready to be a starter like others had proved before. But why re-sign what doesn't work for even bigger $s when there are other options? Maybe Elliott does have it in him to be a starter but it's a hope only so if he wants 1 of the few places he can have the chance to prove it let him sign a "show me" contract. You want the starter signed so as to look @ how much is left to upgrade the skaters but even there the costs of those upgrades have to be determined by what's left in the budget after trades before the 2 drafts. Say you budget for $8 million on a goalie tandem & sign or trade for 1 costing $6 that just means you offer the backup less. But, if a top RW or D comes available that cuts into the amount set aside you can divert funds to pay the goalie that's 85-90% as good as your main choice a tad less. There isn't that much difference in the top 5 available & being a team game having better players up front make many look better.
  22. With Darling likely soon to be signed I'm looking @ Grubauer. If Washington decides to sign & keep him instead of Holtby (same situation a Pitts where $s might dictate who stays) 1 or the other should be available. Holtby @ 6.1 x 3 is more appealing to me than MAF @ 5.75 x 2 or Bishop who will want more $s & term. Grubauer would be the similar situation as Darling (but 3 years younger) so probably around $4.0 x 3. We missed out on Darling but as soon as the playoffs end in Washington BT should be talking to Brian MacLennan. Hold off on signing a backup as Holtby is good for 60+ games so the b/u is almost an afterthought while with Grubauer I'd want 1 capable of tandeming if needed. (The difference in cap hit also determines how much is left to sign that b/u)
  23. Price didn't have an offseason. He was the reason the Habs advanced. The reason Montreal lost was Lundqvist kept the Rags in it while the Habs couldn't score. With some firepower among the skaters they should have advanced. Don't hang that on Price. We didn't get better than average goaltending. The 22nd & 24th ranked goalies did not provide that.
  24. Yeah, unless the Canes really insult him with their offer he'll likely be signed within the week. Anyone want Ward or Lack? 1 should be available with the other exposed to Vegas. ************************************************************ Nobody, including LV, wants Lehtonen or Neimi @ their contract so Dallas will either have to eat 50% to trade 1 or buy @ least 1 out if they hope to improve.
  25. Unless they intend to tandem him with a goalie to be signed after the free agent frenzy leaves the good 1s that aren``t household names available, looking for work & not expecting $6-7 million long term. A 3rd (especially the later Ottawa 1 rather than their own) for 1st crack at the backup expected to be likely to be a starter. A bird in the hand.
