Because a goalie coach isn't living it. A heavily experienced goalie KNOWS how 400 different players have tricked them and keep trying the same tricks.

It's the old saying, "Those that can't do, teach".

WOW your too attached. There is really no reason to keep Markstrom…not unless you’re making the playoffs, cause the next 2 which he’s under contract definitely not…get the assets asap…Vladar can shelter wolf the rest of this season and next why keep

marstrom…nothing he can provide that the goalie coach can’t…going by your logic…those who can’t teach them why have Markstrom teach unless you think he can’t?

@phoenix66 quite eloquently described surfer-dude Kidd(there's a jr backstory I'll spare you) and what went wrong. Wolf should be Markstrom's backup. Markstrom can tell him the tendencies of every shooter in the league. If you need to figure it out for yourself, you could get in big trouble. Goalie coaches can't teach that. Experienced goalies can. Not unlike great young Centers that rock a 36% FO% to start. They need the experienced Cs to explain everyone's tendencies. Left alone, it takes forever.

So I get that Markstrom gets a good return. The "but" is that goalies aren't skaters. I don't think aging is the same equation. Can Markstrom be great at 37-38? Maybe he can, I just can't 100% say he can't. If he stays the same, he extends to retirement for cheaper as a backup/1A-1B?

I just hate the scenario where Kipper leaves and our goaltending becomes an endless quagmire of hot garbage.

With Markstrom, options are still on the table. Without him we have no options.

You have a goalie coach to do what your suggesting Markstrom doing…why?

Not gonna happen.. so don't think I'm suggesting it .. but I can't help but think how enjoyable it would be to watch Connie flip all this capital on playoff rentals today to push for the playoffs and watch all the boards and social media go nuclear 🤣🤣

Stupid hockey move but yeas absolutely hilarious

Trade Vladar and Wolf gets a great mentor, or gets to deal with this fanbase alone.

Screaming now doesn't add jack-Satoshi Nakamoto btw. Nice try at effect though. I missed nothing but you pretending that your opinion is the all-encompassing truth. "Likely" and "maybe" statements contradict what you're trying to purvey.

Wolf doesn’t need a mentor he need to face NHL pucks, the more the better, he’s that guy that needs to adjust.  His first year in the AHL was not great, after that he’s dominated…and he’s been that way at every level, NHL will be no different.

keeping Markstrom really helps absolutely nothing, if anything it impress and slows Wolfs NHL development time.

if Cgy was in or had a real chance to make the playoffs I could totally get behind keeping Markstrom but fact is they are 8 points out, all the teams above them keep winning…to the point even when Cgy wins they fall further out.

granted the schedule is not kind for them they don’t play only of those teams above them that they could catch.

the big question is, why keep Markstrom at this point? Do you really think they can get in?

The odds are against them, the safe bet, trade Markstrom, get Wolf some Regular NHL experience, get a haul of assets while markstrom is as good as any goalie in the NhL now…why risk him sliding back to last years performance? You get no one wanting him let alone the haul you get for him as he’s playing now.  Added you hedge against a false perception of what your team really is…drop in the standings get a much better draft pick too…really there is nothing that benefits Cgy by keeping Markstrom if he’s in happy and wanting to leave let him go.

the only reason you keep Markstrom at this point is if he’s said to Conroy I don’t want to go anywhere…then you honour the NTC but that’s really the only reason to keep him

Not to be offensive, but if anyone knew the proper way to do things, they'd be worth 1,000 times their weight in gold.

Instability at goal, we're watching it with NJ, Toronto, Carolina etc. Maybe we should trade stabilities?

We already picked NJ the proper way. Take the guy that needs a chance. Mercer and Holtz get nothing but chances. We literally already ripped them off for that guy. We should wait and see if that's a trend. Maybe our scouting team is really nailing it for Conroy on finding players that need chances?

I'm willing to make that bet. Never heard of Grushnikov? Me neither. But I'm willing to bet a Flames scout not only knew of him, but got a 2nd scout to audit, then they told Conroy he's a hidden gem that needs to be targeted. Start with Stankoven, but your real intention is Grushnikov. Let the other GM think that he really put you through the grinder.

That's just me surmising, but I doubt that I'm far from the truth. Professional bullSatoshi Nakamototers. I'd imagine the Toffoli trade ended with, "look, I think I'm giving you more than a good enough player for Mercer, but I'll settle on Sharangovich, but I want your 2nd this year. You're killing me, man. Alright, a 3rd".

I’m with you on this tactic…Shar has been exploiting in terms of development..how much better he can be is hard to say, but even if this is as good as it gets, safe to say he’s at least a solid #2 Ctr easily replacing Lindholm.

sometimes the “big name” is not as important as the chemistry between players…the big thing with Shar which we all figured when we got him, was he may click with Hubie…that has most definitely happened so that’s worth like 2 players alone

It sounds quiet. I don't expect the Flames to do anything major today but be surprised if they did nothing.

Really does not sound like Markstrom will get moved

I don’t think he moves either…he should but I don’t think he will.

I’m wondering about Kylington and  Manji  mostly. Is there a contender looking for a. LW? it’s a tough call, Manji has been ramping up as of late, playing well..the team as a whole has really improved and impressed…but youth seems to be the name of the game…and the window is at least 2 years out so anyone on a 2-3 contract term should be considered to be moved…But not for picks, Cgy has enough of those what they need is young players who are NHL ready and have not peaked yet…they be had to get but they are what is needed now

I don't think it's very outlying season. They've been past the first round in every one of their playoffs aside from the one where they got screwed by the league. And they missed the playoffs once. The other times they went to conference finals. I'd say that's a huge success so far and exactly what mp5029 would want.

i don't view a rebuild as a guarantee to win the cup. It's hard. What I expect a rebuild to do is get in every year and be a high contender.

    This 100%

You mean Vegas? Your stand is based on one outlying season? I'm not going to argue the benefits of keeping/trading Marky but thats a weak foundation to base your reasoning.

No look at Seattle is arguably better than Cgy right now, Nash is Fla is…take your pick..and LVK’s outliner year was the year they missed I think they have only missed 1 since starting just 6years ago…

id say the team is too emotionally invested in players. I get part of it is needing to be human. But I bet the new stadium goes further. While other teams Lavish their players in 5️ hotel arena the flames are a 2 ️ motel.

    its one part.

but we always choose a down draft year to do this..:: this is iggy 2.0. Poor draft year. I like Conroy getting stuff for different drafts.

This is very true down draft year…last year would have been better, next year better too…

however, this year is deep in D so it’s not great for Ctrs but D is an area you can wing big on…

I can’t help but feel Cgy is gonna go hard for Tij…the marketing alone fan base is gonna be all in, even if Tij doesn’t become a star he’s still gonna sell tickets for a few years, but he’s definitely gonna be a star he’s trending extremely well..still a bit of a gamble with any draft player but he’s got everything checked to signal he’s a safe bet to be a solid #2 Ctr

bs. It's the one not racing to a minimum 5yr basement. Mercer would be more important than Markstrom? LOL

If we didn’t have Wolf waisting away in the AHL I’d say no he isn’t..but we do have wolf and he has nothing left in the AHL…added to the fact next year he is waiver eligible…

yes he hasn’t showed like a lights out NHL goalie yet..key word is yet, give him some consistency with regular starts so he can adjust…no way they make the post season at this point may as well get a solid young Ctr which is a position of need in the coming years..

Saying BS does not discount the fact that it’s the proper way to do things.

proof in pudding no cup since 1989, last final appearance 2004 that’s 2 decades ago or in hockey terms that’s the equivalent of 2 rebuilds and not even a consistent contending team…

Cgy needs to get emotionally invested holding on to players and get into business mode…this is why teams that expanded have won cups in like 6 years or less, why they are consistently better than Cgy has been since 2004

Tanev, Lindhom and Hanifin were selling low cause they were must moves and positions of weakness…

Markstrom is not a must sell, it’s an opportunity to sell high

We're still in love with drama are we? Let's trade Markstrom? Because one media hack named Darren Dreger rolled out these nightmare scenarios that must be true?

Because, you know, Conroy has no personal access to Markstrom to have a heart-to-heart and clear the air.

Or is it that we all see that Markstrom is in a steep decline? We collectively know that past the age of 35 goalies stop training and just kinda stand there?

What a fanbase. The volume of hate from the Oilers loss through last year was at 11. Now, guess what, he is a great goalie so let's trade him because we all know for a fact that he's nails one year and is horrible the next? Because with some obscure reasoning that makes sense.

So should I, "think of the return", or should I think of how near impossible it is to find a definitive #1 goalie in this league?

"Wolf's ready". For what? He's shown zero signs of that in his call ups. But that was likely the team's fault, like it never is for Markstrom, according to fans.

If he were to be traded, I'll guarantee I'll spit venom in any, "Markstrom Appreciation Thread".

He's been appreciated by this fanbase like I appreciate a doormat for my muddy boots.

It’s this mentality that lest players walk and junk returns…

you don’t buy stocks high and sell low in the stock market…same with hockey and the players…they are the stock

    Wow, ya beat me.

LA Pays 1st and 3rd for Toffee at 50%; about what we paid for him, but he had time remaining.

We send a 3rd this year and Markstrom.

NJ gets Markstrom, our 3rd, LA 3rd for Toffee.

We get Mercer and a 1st.

Sounds like LA should pay us something.

    Alternate:

LA sends Turcotte and a 1st to us.

We send NJ Markstrom and a 3rd.

    NJ sends us Toffoli, Mercer.

We send Toffoli at 50% to LA.

We get Turcotte, Mercer and LA 1st.

NJ gets Markstrom and our 3rd.

    LA gets Toffoli at 50%.

Seems fair enough - 1st and Turcotte for Toffoli at 50%

Is there any other way of making something like this work but without getting Turcotte? Otherwise it’s good…maybe instead send turcotte and LAs first to NJD for Holtz?

so Cgy gets Mercer and Holtz instead…that’s better than the turcotte and LA 1st for Cgy…we kinda need young players more than picks now.

BOS making Ullmark available?  Makes sense if they are going to extend Swayman long term.  And bad for the Flames if BOS is coming into the picture to put a G on the market.

Yes so either Bosnor Cgy needs to trade a G today while the other stands pat…If one moves and one stays keeps the market good for both teams now and in the summer…if both are available and possibly Nas decides to move throng too it’s gonna be a low return with 3 solid G in the summer…Nas is not moving Staios now, this leaves either Bos or Cgy to make a move now…as of now you have 2 solid G potentially available, if none move then the summer it’s 3.

Markstrom is probably the best of the 3 but not by much, not enough to make a team over pay when there are 2 other options.

making a move now may be the smartest thing to max return on Markstrom…

  15. 16 minutes ago, cross16 said:

Don't think he's going to be moved.

Yeah that just means there is noting immediate…not saying that he will be moved by end of day tomorrow…he could get pulled mid game too if something comes up…that’s happens many times before too…

This upper Mgt is gonna probably keep him thinking they can make it…huge mistake, I think the return drops in the summer cause there will be more options for quality G…I know the counter argument will be more suitors but also more decent quality options, maybe not as good as Markstrom but close enough for most of the possible
