Excellent analysis. Bishop also did well at the end of the year with LAK, it was their lack of scoring that kind of tanked his record. Get hime signed, Johnson #2 or perhaps Rittich and give Gillies another year as starter in the AHL. The year after, bring him in as the backup and give Parsons the starter's job in the AHL. 3-4 years down the road, if all continue to develop you're solid, if not we always have Bishop.
  2. That's an interesting scenario. Another would be to just elevate either Conroy or our ex-Phoenix GM. Bringing in the LA guys would strike a cord with the Sutter connection, and they certainly have had success, and it would mean some dramatic moves to realign the team into their West Coast mold. Hmmm... Let's get this thing done. The longer it lingers, what with the Buffalo situation of big money, big changes in the offing, the more people are going to be suspect and get concerned.

Bring in Smith from Arizona for a couple of years. Solid starter then can mentor the young guys.
  4. Wasn't going to argue about it, but you gave me such an easy target, I have to. I agree to some extent, but I guess you haven't actually watched much of Karlsson's D play? The definition of abysmal, Hamilton looks good beside him.
  5. 20:20 hindsight armchair GMing is so, so easy, and the added bonus is you ALWAYS work out looking like a genius. Its a useless exercise. However, perhaps you ARE a genius armchair GM. If so, what moves should we make RIGHT NOW to get out of our funk and progress this team onto the the Stanley Cup within the next two years? Specifics, please.
  6. That's nonsense. We DID rebuild with D, with veteran leadership to mentor them, the thing is we're now questioning those D as we still have problems. I believe our D are coming along fine, with multiple prospects that are going to be ready to jump in this year or next.... (i.e. Kulak, Wotherspoon, Kylington, Andersson, Hickey. plus... down the road).
  7. I would be willing to trade Hamilton for Trouba, though not sure that is what Winnipeg may be willing to take. Hamilton is still young but he makes way too many unforced errors. Brodie is the best skater we have, plus the steadiest overall. Gio the most physical and best offensively. These two together are terrific, but with the varying, and sometimes awful pairs so far this season its been a disaster pretty much from our D overall.

Love the post, got a good laugh, especially the non-hockey jibe.... Yes, its OK

After watching the full game it seemed to be a fairly even game overall as far as the play went. The biggest difference in the attacks was that Vancouver had a "high-danger attack" with shots all over the net, one-timers and a couple of tap-ins versus the Flames attack which was primarily throwing lots of pucks on net but mostly low down, few if any high or top-corner shots (2 Vancouver goals) and zero tap-ins. Watching the game it reminded me so much of Hiller last year where Miller just went down on his knees and blocked everything low. Flames just couldn't elevate the puck and showed virtually zero creativity. Not saying CJohnson was great, because sometimes you can stop those chances, but the score is more indicative of team breakdowns and good offence then his terrible play.
  10. Mackinnon is kind of a mix of Gaudreau and Monahan, being the size and C position of Monahan but with the speed and dynamic puck-carrying play of Gaudreau(not the puck handler, but....). To me he's also kind of like Bennett in the sense of still learning how to best utilize his skills to maximize the potential of both him and his line mates.
  11. He wasn't the GM of Team USA, he isn't the GM of the Flames. The Flames are clearly not going primarily in that direction. Why the concern?

I'm really looking forward to our goalie play to start this season. That is ALL of the goalies, from Parsons and Schneider in Junior to McDonald, Gillies and Rittich in the AHL/ECHL and Elliot and Johnson in the NHL. With the two NHL goalies unsigned and the issues around the Expansion Draft I'd anticipate some extensions being signed mid-season so the early play will probably go a long ways to determining what our goalie outlook will be to end the season and going into 2017. It could easily be almost exactly the same to very, very different with major changes at every level. Most of all I'm hoping they all have excellent seasons so no matter which direction we end up going we'll have great options in them all.

Well I totally disagree with your assessment and inferences. So glad you are not in Flame's management. So tell me, what did you say last year?

We did upgrade: a full season of DH settling in (and much better), Jokipakka added, Russel traded. That sounds like three big changes to me. In addition, of course, new coaching and systems and a HUGE upgrade with the two goalies. But as you said, we shall see.

Need to stop drinking, bud (or whatever it is you are using). Coach1-worked with and taught D, Coach2-PK specialist, "Elliot would ...have a Cup?"-Hitchcock and the Blues? Flames basically same D last two years(-Hamilton)-vastly different results(hmmmm?), Hamilton showed drastic improvement throughout the season last year, Kipper's/Hiller's/Ramo's "decline" solely due to terrible D? Right.............

With multiple good goalie prospects that are going to be ready or on the verge within a year or two, there is no way Elliot gets 4 years after this one. Three maybe assuming he comes through strong. As compared to Hiller, I don't think Hiller EVER was as good as Elliot, so its a weak comparable in any sense.

see: Expansion Draft. Some teams taking advantage of a limited market (StLouis) and others (Pittsburg, TBL) stubbornly waiting things out. We'll see how it works out over the next year.
  18. Totally agree for the start of the season and for a team with so many changes happening all at once. However, from the hockey purists, this is the only time to get a "best on best" tournament outside of the Olympics, and even that is problematic with all the injuries at that point in the season.
  19. I believe they both want to play World's and will be signed by the end of August, and hopefully before. If they are so foolish as to hold out (very much doubt it, virtually no chance of happening) BT would hold firm as the team is not under ANY circumstances going to be held hostage by a player(s), and would just make due with whoever they had that wanted to play.
  20. I agree, and was thrilled when we drafted him. It'll likely be a couple years at the earliest before he gets a real shot in the AHL but hopefully he continues his solid play and the Flames start to back-up several pro-ready goalies. As a second thought, I'm really interested to see what equipment changes the NHL goes with this year and next and its impact on all goalies.
  21. Yes it's going to be very interesting to not only get Bennett some solid wingers (Tkachuk & Brouwer anyone?) but also to see what GG brings and how his changes impact the guys we already think we've got figured out.
  22. Glad to help out. It is interesting, but he was primarily focusing on NHL results and the numbers speak for themselves, with Gaudreau at #6 overall in 2015-16 NHL scoring and Monahan #28 overall. We may be a bit blasé about Johnny's numbers (lol, if that's possible!), he is by far and away the most successful really young player in the NHL.
  23. #5 - TBL #4 - Buffalo #3 - Edmonton #2 - Florida #1 - Calgary Flames (with just passing reference to Bennett and no mention of Hamilton) The Calgary big three were Gadreau, Monahan and Tkachuk. His emphasis was actual NHL players and with Gaudreau & Monahan as 2 of the top8 under-25 scorers in the league it put us over the top. Honorable mentions to Arizona and Winnipeg.
  24. Yeah, and he didn't even mention Calgary's great young D.
  25. Yes re the Nakladal factor and WC, which I guess also means JG & SM aren't playing either unless they sign their deals.
