I think that's the very first time I ever noticed that with the Flames. Usually they go with the 4th line.....

The NHL has reduced the goalie equipment to allow more goals. I'm guessing last year's averages are now irrelevant and it remains to be seen where the new numbers level out.

The fourth goal was his fault, but saying the game was Smith's fault is laughable. The Flames were not skating hard till the third, they could not bury multiple glorious chances (penalty shot, 5on3, etc....) before then and the Blues came out hard and determined. Full marks to them and at least the Flames showed up in the third.

I fully agree that should not be a long term trend. I just believe that between score effects for most of the game, the “extra” 4 shots on the 5on3 and the opponent being the very best offensive D in the whole league... that only 43 shots was very good. Against the “average” team with those conditions it would most likely be down around 30. Agree to disagree. Tonight I’d expect fewer shots because of the team but in-game effects matter a lot.

They had 5 SOG on the 5v3. They had 7-21-15 shots during the game. The vast majority of the shots were from the perimeter. They had very few rebounds or plays in close. Their D, the top offensive D in the whole NHL, was activated almost all game. The Flames D played very well..... and Smith did too. Why is this contentious?
  6. Bennett actually scored a great goal but the refs screwed up and blew the play dead for no reason. Bennett had a good game, Ryan too.

It was Score Effects almost the whole game. It was a 2:00 5on3 against.... In the third they tightened up and shut them down....... It was one of their best defensive efforts in a long, long time. Get your eyes off the stats and look at the game. Very impressive puck pursuit, one on one battles and attacking the puck, against the best offensive D corps in the entire NHL.
  8. I believe its a still early feeling out period with the 12+ pretty good players BP has to work with, with several being new to the Flames. No line is set fully, but a few trends seem to be emerging. The trends are in respect to scoring, defensive play, face-offs, line chemistry and other matters. It is still a work in progress. In addition, the overall team play is still a work in progress in terms of how BP wants them to play to be most effective. I don't think the team is there yet either. As far as results go, the results are mixed but not unusual for any team at this point. I think the best NHL team (results) out there today is Carolina, but I'm doubtful that will stand. Once the team gets its first ten or twelve games in we'll have a much better picture. The four trends that seem apparent to date are, first, the team is scoring way more than last year. Secondly, the PP is way more diverse than last year. Thirdly the coaches seem way more involved and responsive to changes in game. The final trend is that there seems to be more resilience than last year with the Flames fighting harder right to the end. Defensively, personnel-wise, TOI, goalkeeping, systems changes and PP/PK are still trying to get settled. The Flames sit 3rd in the Division and 6th in the Conference at this point, after 2 games..... Let's see where they are November 1st........
  9. These first two games it seems that he is building good chemistry with Jankowski and seems to be meshing better with his line mates which I thought has always been one of his main deficiencies. Thought the line played pretty well today, had some chances too. Looking forward to this continuing.
  10. It seems like your angst is because of draft position waste, which is a wasted opportunity, more than anything to do with Bennett himself. But try as the NHL does, forecasting 17 year olds 3-5 years down the line is very difficult, to say the least. We hope we do well on average even if any specific choice turns out to be much less than anticipated.
  11. I have nothing against Bennett, I just like to call it like I see it. If you were at the game and focusing on Bennett then you obviously had a better view. Question: what do you think Bennett (or anyone for that matter) needs to do to get shifted up?

    Thats a pretty reasonable assesment.
  13. Why is everyone so fixated on Bennett? Overall the team wasn't competitive in 1 on 1 battles nor in coordinating good passing plays. The Bennett fixation does nothing to address the overall issues, but I guess at least its a shiny object that distracts fan anger elsewhere giving others a chance to meld and grow together? If you watched the game, Bennett did little to stand out. If you base your analysis on limited stats, he stands out. I don't recall a single moment in the game where Bennett was dangerous or made a dangerous scoring chance, whereas I recall many from Monahan, Dube and others. Perhaps Bennett isn't getting the love because he's not doing much to push the team forward? Hopefully that will change, not only for him but for the whole team.

Not totally, but it certainly hasn't been stellar and does seem to be the team's clear weakness. BP must be having nightmares and hoping Smith & Co. can hold the fort....

Good comment overall, though I got a chuckle comparing him to Hazek, probably the best goalie of all-time as some sort of negative. To me, whether you are more conventional with “technical” play, or “all over the place” the bottom line is can you stop the puck? Even more than that, thinking of Fuhr, can you make the stops when the game is on the line? Who cares what the style is?

The goalies definitely need to come around, and mesh with the team's d play which is still a work in progress. The massive shifts in line-ups probably doesn't help much and hopefully that is near finished. As to the goalies, I thought the past two outings for both Gillies and Rittich were pretty solid.
  17. cccsberg

    Goaltending

Rittich plays the Oilers AHL team and gives up 6 goals, including several bad ones. Gillies plays against a top6 NHL teams from last year, gives up 3 goals, none bad. Hey still early just can’t agree with your comment relative to actual play. Looks like Smith had a tough night tonight. Hoping the goalies come around.....

Gillies has played just as well as Rittich this preseason. No, I take that back, he's played better. If Gillies gets sent down and if nothing else changes its only because they can without going to waivers.
  19. Not sure about pot, but hanging hydroponics gardens certainly are feasible.....
  20. Now that's progressive thinking, which should be looked at. Many months back I had also thought a total redesign ie interactive electronic seating and more space might also be interesting, which could open up whole new avenues of entertainment and potential revenue streams.... Let's enter the 21st Century.

I like the Glass idea, but with only 8 games left before the season and at least 4 goalies ahead of him it’s doubtful. Rittich has redeemed his first start and will likely get 2 more, Gillies 2 more and Parsons at least 1 which leaves only 3 for Smith. Unless there are injuries, a trade or someone seriously falters I can’t see Glass getting a start.

Nothing like the start of the season to see the bs starting to flow, the casting about for scapegpoats and the smartest guy in the room syndrome grabbing hold of various fans. But that's fans... god bless 'em all.
