OK, thanks. Hasek one of the best ever. You never know. As for the game tonight, Backstrom was solid, though not overly tested. The one thing I really noticed was his puck handling, especially very good, soft and right on the tape passes to the D. It should be interesting to contrast Hiller tomorrow and then Backstrom versus Minnesota.

OK, I'm biting. Who are these goalies?

I do like Ramo, notwithstanding injury-recovery issues. I believe injury were also what killed Backstrom before last year, so I'm not putting much stock into his poor play that year.

Agree that Ortio is still middling, though improving, but all Gillies has shown to date is high end potential and success to the highest level. Next year will be very telling, yes, but otherwise I think you're way off base.

Looking back at the NHL article, it was stated as <3 years played, i.e. just 2 years pro, still protected. Also, I have read the expansion draft would likely occur before July 1, 2017 therefore still part of the 2016 official season. But, no reason to argue over it, once all the details come out and are fully clarified (e.g. NTC, NMC, dates, expansion Y/N?) we will know.

Don't agree, just because the stats are lower doesn't mean he played a "stinker". Gillies is automatically protected as a <3yr pro.

    Or how about these? Gibson/Anderson(RFA)-Anaheim Dubnyk/Kuemper(RFA)-Minnesota Halak/Berube-NYI Lundqvist/Raanta-NYR Allen/Elliot-SLB Bishop(NMC)/Vasilevskiy/Gudlevskis(RFA)-TBL Miller/Markstrom-Vancouver Pavelec/Hellebyck-Winnipeg PS: Fucale should be protected as a 2nd year player....

Not sure about ACL's and impact on goalies. Certainly its a serious injury and it seems the recuperation time will take until late October or November at the earliest. That alone makes Ramo a bit of a challenge and unlikely the complete answer. The good thing about him is we have a history and know he can (could) provide league-average, if not better, and he won't cost us any other prospects to acquire. I seriously doubt Reimer will be available for 3 years, much less 2 years, and for fairly high dollars especially if he continues to do well with SJS. In fact, if he does I'd expect him to re-sign there. I don't see any other UFAs as any better than Ramo, if even equal to.

I recall early on with Price that he was struggling and there was serious talk about trading him and going elsewhere but management stuck with him and allowed him to mature into a solid goalie. I believe Ortio has the potential to do the same, growing into a solid starter and we should allow him to do so before dismissing him and undercutting him and his confidence by bringing in another. Although you never like injuries, the Ramo injury was a Godsend as it forced the Flames to give Ortio a serious shot (as Hiller was garbage...). It cam around TDL and is kind of like an "own-trade" for a hot prospect goalie who we are now evaluating. Hopefully he can keep it up and continue to grow into the role. Very well said, and if they re-sign Ortio and Ramo while keeping all our other assets then we are likely good for next year and can focus on other pressing matters.

If Ortio continues his solid play with very good numbers and composure, he could definitely be an option for starter going forward. Cases in point, look at Jones with SJS, or Talbot with Edmonton. Both had very solid numbers with few games before this year and both have turned into pretty god good starters this year, though not without hiccups. Going the same route with Ortio would be fantastic, if he can continue his growth. Saying that, you till need a solid vet to guide him and fill-in when needed. To me, we can go elsewhere, yes, but looking at Ramo/Ortio to start the year looks like the best of both worlds with the exception of Ramo's injury and rehab. If the Flames decide to go elsewhere we should be looking for something similar, i.e. a solid vet for a couple years and a young up and comer to groom to step in, either immediately or within the year. 2-3 years down the road we already have a couple developing options that could surpass them all.

IF it is just a salary dump, a good trade. IF it is/becomes something more, even better. No downside here.
  12. Great time to experiment, which helps set the table for next Fall. Hopefully these young guys prove their worth which might provide impetus for trading away Smid, Engelland and Wideman before the draft and going with some new faces.

I will wait to see what Backstrom can do. The past year he hasn't played, and was battling injuries for a couple before that. Therefore I don't consider his recent #s necessarily indicative of his current play, which remains to be proven.

I'm not sure that this was a concerted PLAN all along, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. If Backstrom can still play and we keep him, it will turn out to be a brilliant move for a couple of years, not to mention the mentoring of our younger Finnish goalies. If it doesn't, the trade will look like a 6th for Jones and Backstrom an afterthought that people will not even notice. In either case, its a brilliant move with next to zero downside for the Flames.
  15. I've been noticing a lot of missed assignments/getting beat out of Giordano and even, to a lessor extent Brodie lately. Not sure if its just the reality of First pairing D against superstars (most likely) or not but it seems more than I have recalled previously. I'm pretty sure its going against superstars.... heck, how many times has Gaudreau turned Doughty inside out, especially last year? It happens to even the best.

That's true, but I might be willing to go with Ramo and Ortio, assuming Ramo continues to progress over the summer.

    Goaltending

I'll be interested to see that for myself when he gets his few games.
  18. Yes, you are correct here. It would have been great if Sutter had been able to accomplish both.

    Goaltending

Well, totally true, what do we really know? I believe Backstrom was pretty good at one point, and if he can rekindle that in a few games with the Flames that would be interesting.
  20. Considering where we are in our rebuild, I agree completely. Ask me again in 2-3 years when we will be looking to add THAT last piece or two (a la Chicago lately) and draining our pick/prospect pool will be the ammunition used.

Got to stop worrying about the Oilers. As you can recall, they give just about EVERY rookie goalie an extension, e.g. Scrivens, Talbot.... Brossoit hasn't proved anything yet, and Ortio was definitely ahead of him at the time of the trade. Relax, BT will work something out in the Summer.
  22. Not sure what your point is? We could easily plug in Wotherspoon, Nakladal and Kulak without losing much if anything from the current line-up. Next year some more guys might be ready too.
  23. cccsberg

    Goaltending

The two games were great, and it was great to see. Hopefully he can keep it up and establish consistency over the next 20+ games. Regardless of which, we currently have zero goalies(except rookies) inked for next season so, yes, its a pretty significant issue.

    Goaltending

I've heard something of Godla, the others, not. Also, not sure what we need is another <21 prospect, as we have a bunch of those already.
  25. Surely it will be interesting between the two, as well as a few others. If BT does indeed pull off multiple moves in the coming days that will open up spots, most likely, and provide a clear shot to the big team in the immediate future.
