  1. I am really dissapointed that GG has not gone back to those lines, he tried them for a third period of that montreal game I wanna say but nothing since then. Mostly I wanna see tkachuk given a go with bennett again, Im not satisfied with seeing him spend the whole season with backlund id rather see ferland there.
  2. Yea so that would be the justin schultz loophole right? Play a year of a league other then college and then 3 years of college, thereby giving you UFA rights. Ive never understood it personally, it just seems like a weird system where if you dont sign you get the pick of the litter. It doesnt usually happen with guys out of major junior who end up UFAs because they arent the same level of players usually, its a weird system.
  3. Its nothing to do with their final year of college necessarily as far as I understand. A player can come out of college whenever he wants, he just has to leave his team. A player whos drafted has to wait till the end of the 4 years to declare for free agency, im not 100% sure on that. Im assuming most guys dont leave early, they want to finish their education before they move on.
  4. They did bring that up. The guy was commenting how after talbot they dont really have any known NHL talent in the back up sensem, brossoit hasent looked great when he has played minus the one game against us where he was average at best. Im curious to see what happens come playoffs if talbot plays 70 ish games in the regular season and then into the playoffs fatigue might become a factor.
  5. So on another note I was listening to edmonton radio today, and they were talking with a goaltending "expert" from a magazine, who has lots of connections. He was pointing out how bad the work load of a backup can be very difficult, and mentally challenging, some guys just arent up to it. He pointed out that as a backup you have your work with the goalie coach before practice, then practice where you get peppered with shots, and then usually there is shooting drills/specials teams work where you are also peppered with shots. He was pointing out the workload of the average backup, and I never thought about it when I played but you are a glorified shooter tutor, and it can be mentally challenging. Im really wondering if thats why we saw the downfall of ortio last year, cause I really dont know if jordan sigalet is that good at ruining goalies. I wonder if it was just the weird workload ortio had and the lack of confidence that crept into his game.
  6. Hmm I don't see that happening, why do you suggest it?
  7. oh dont get me wrong I see that, but it could have waited till next season. Im one of those people who would rather see a low scoring hockey game played the right way, then a 6-5 hockey game. Although that said when pittsbugh and washington faced off a few weeks back, I think it was 7-6 that was a pretty exciting game.
  8. I have to agree with some goalies complaints though that it seems weird to make this switch mid season. Its really a weird idea, and im not quite sure what the rush was for the NHL.
  9. Elliot made some big saves last night and kept us in the hockey game which means he did his job. Im really tired of this excuse that the goalie shouldnt stop the puck on a breakaway or 2 on 1 took place, and its the teams job to limit those chances. We have allowed alot less in shots per game, but our goals against is just as bad. Mistakes will happen and its their job to be that last line of D. If a goalie in the NHL needs all the shots to come from the outside with no screen to be successful, hes probably not a NHL goalie. Im totally agreeing with you, I dont think we gave up that many high quality chances against toronto, but every high quality chance found its way to the back of the net.
  10. ON another note did anyone listen to CJ's post game comments? Guy is basically blaming the team in front of him saying we cant win when we give up breakaways and 2 on 1s. Personally I understand where he is coming from, its frustrating to have a 2 on 1 or breakaway, but they happen to every team. id rather have my goalie say I should have made some saves and I didnt, ive got to be better.
  11. Well it cant be any worse then what we have been seeing recently in terms of generating offense, and I think those lines werent given a fair kick because of how the team performed to start the season. Im glad hes going back to that.
  12. GG switched back to the lines from the preseason in the back half of the game last night. Gaudreau-mony-versteeg Ferland-backlund-frolik Tkachuk-bennett-brouwer Bouma-stajan-chiasson I thought that some of the lines had some good shifts in the second half of the game just couldnt put enough together to score. Im curious to see if he sticks with this for next game.
  13. I agree with you completely. Dont take what I said in the GDT last night the wrong way, im just frustrated as well. Moving on though the teams plays well for the most part, but they just make these huge mistakes that are costing them goals. How many times last night did did we see JG turn it over at the opponents blue line, I know hes trying to create but this is killing us. The list goes on and on of personal mistakes, as in ferland losing his coverage last night on 2? or was it 3 goals? I dont remember. Anyways my point is you can see what GG wants them to do, we have seen what GG wants from the team, but its frustrating when these guys like kevin last night have these weird mental lapses that lead to goals. Its totally on the players at this point, I dont get their issues.
  14. I agree completely he has. I just dont think it would be like the flames or BT to announce his contract mid season.
  15. I would agree with this, the flames and BT dont seem like the types to announce GM contracts mid season. I dont see the need to announce that midseason, what difference does it make.
  16. Seriously JJ, mason mcdonald isent a write off, its not like hes 29 or something the kid has lots of years to develop, most goalies dont make it till their late 20s. I dont see where you getting this idea from that you need to play a whole crap ton of games as a goalie in a season to develop into a good goalie. Take a look at cam talbot in edmonton, his season high during his development years was 55 games that happened one time, and alot of people would say hes a very solid goalie now. I dont think you need a carey price level goalie to win a cup, corey crawford is not a superstar goalie his season high is .926 unless you count 5 games in 07-08 where he was .929, the majority of his career has been around .920 which last time I checked is about league average.
  17. JJ just likes to stir things up and come up with the most ridiculous arguements to support his conclusions. He would be happy if we were last in the league if Ortio was in net.
  18. I think it was a few weeks back he made the switch, I remember reading something about it.
  19. Just an interesting article I found linked on flames nation in the comments, according to a new advanced stats metric gio is #3 in the league for D men and gaudreau is in the top 10 where as corsi isent so happy with them, an interesting read for everyone, dont know if I agree with him on russell though. http://edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/nhl/cult-of-hockey/analytics-expert-says-kris-russell-of-edmonton-oilers-is-underrated-and-one-of-nhls-top-defensive-d-men
  20. I have a feeling they made a deal with him that if they signed him, he would get in games I don't think it had anything to do with the coaching staff.
  21. Brodie did play well during the playoffs with engelland. He didnt really look on the right side during his run with Gio this year, im more inclinded to keep him on the left. But as you said trying to find a top 4 right shot D men would be crazy difficult. The only way we get lucky with that if someone off the farm is ready next year for the NHL. Theres always the possibility that we try for someone like shattenkirk or stone from arizona both would be good options for our second pairing.
  22. I dont think karri ramo was a bad goaltender necessarily. I think the flames just wanted to go in a new direction and they certainly werent going to wait till december of this season for him to be good to go. Who knows how his comback might look in toronto, as far as ive heard he hasent signed a contract yet.
  23. are you agreeing with me? rittich has played 8, gilles 12 games
  24. You do realize gilles has played more games then rittich right?
  25. Lots of goaltenders start to come into their prime in their late 20s, into their 30s ala kipper, tim thomas etc. Yes hes on a hot streak right now, I dont think anyone is expecting him to stay at a .949 pct thats he been at but hes not going to drop down to .880 suddenly he will probably stay at .920 to 9.25 on avg whch is really good. The odds are good that he will be a decent goalie, even a backup into next year. We arent buying high and selling low, there is plenty of evidence that elliot will turn it around by trade deadline and then we can sell him off. If he doesnt turn it around oh well the flames will have a choice to make, as they wont be able to trade him if he doesnt turn it around, at least I really doubt it. Its not blockading development, neither gilles or rittich were NHL ready this year, and they may not be NHL ready next year. There is no reason to go into the season with spots open for rookies, thats how you end up like edmonton did for 10 years. The competition is there, and if the flames roll into next year with two vets in net again, well gilles or rittich better earn his spot. The NHL is not a development league, stop acting like its a personal affront to the goalies in the AAA that we dont have a spot for them.
