  1. Would you rather have Barzal or Hamilton?
  2. What I saw last year was a guy who went down early on every shot leaving top corners open and having to make glove saves behind his head because of it. When you're making saves that you can't see it is extremely dangerous and it was something NHLers caught onto and opened him up as his string of starts went on. Of those games you reference, he was lucky to win one or two of them and his game slowly spiralled off. I am all for giving him a try and I hope he fixed those tendencies. I liked how he tracked the puck in the 1st of the last two games. But forgive me for being skeptical because he hasn't shown yet that he had fixed those tendencies.
  3. Cross, I see those too and when someone looks more awkward than stable it is concerning and it was refreshing to see him play well his first start. I didn't watch last night's game. Kerr and Steinberg say he played solid enough last night. But I wish I saw the game.
  4. 2 for Ortio? Ummmmmmmmm no. Just because he played well in a handful of games doesn't make him worth that much. Wow! Maybe 1.5 but I would go around what he is making now on a 1 or 2 year deal.
  5. After getting to the SCF in '04, we also left the plan and went into win now mode. The Flames were a team that should've kept building as we were a team that, with Kipper, catapulted us into higher rankings. If we kept building on top of our young talent, things might've been different. Our biggest problem was chasing a dream, a player who could play with Iggy. Getting another Kipper would be great for us, but we have to stick to the plan.
  6. Doesn't the team have arbitration rights to negotiate a new deal lower? We did that with Backlund for one of his contracts didn't we?
  7. Hartley sounded quite appreciative of Ortio's play last night. Last night I didn't notice Ortio's tendency to go down on a windup for a shot. That made him very vulnerable top shelf. It was something that bothered me a lot, which made him make awkward saves. I liked his game last night too.
  8. I haven't liked Hiller since day1 and thought the organization should have given Ramo the chance before getting Hiller. He earned it at the end of the year, after they traded Berra. Ramo's play was worthy of the chance. Therefore, I just never liked Hiller. Then this year, Ramo faultered, and I didn't like both, but I liked how Ramo rebounded.
  9. I assume it would be for a long term fix like a prospect ready for the jump or a goalie around Ramo's age, like Pavelec or Reimer. They'd be someone to play 3-4 years. I think if done right 4 years is when we go deeper in the playoffs.
  10. Is it team defence or the defence you are referring to? I think goaltending is probably the biggest problem but team defence adds to it. So I agree with you and it just proves the point that we still have major holes in the rebuild. Are we ahead of schedule on the build? I think that making the playoffs last year has some of us thinking that we are a perennial playoff team.
  11. I think he was referring to Matt Murrey not Fleury.
  12. Who knows, maybe we can get a goalie for Russell or Hudler, or a combination of both or a pick. This part is a response To Deeds, I still think, even though Hiller and Ramo were bad, that one should have gotten a run in the beginning of the season. It was clear that Hiller and Ramo were not getting into any sort of groove and there was no playing Ortio. I know both played horrible, but one needed to play more as shown by Ramo's performance after Hiller got injured. After last night's game you would think it is time to try Ortio. But I guess 10 points is still within striking distance of the playoffs...
  13. The decision I find most peculiar is the fact that Hartley rotated the goalies and didn't let them get into any rhythm at all, and then Ramo gets into one when Hiller goes down, and now he decided he can let Hiller do it too. He should have rode one in the first place. It's like you said, a few games doesnt get you going. I think it's time to go to Ortio. I am not a fan of Ortio, but I am not a fan of Hiller either, and he's shown he doesn't deserve anymore starts. Next year he is earning Euros.
  14. They will likely need a year or two in the AHL. Then a year or two as a backup goalie. If we are looking at the way someone like Schneider developed, then 4 years for a starter could be good. Although in 3 years is when someon like Gillies should be competing for a spot. He probably needs 2 full seasons in the AHL. Macdonald probably has a few more years to develop. I don't think it is safe to assume that both are going to be developed and ready to go in 3 years. They can probably use a year as a back up in the NHL as well. They're not exactly high end pedigree and even Schneider who was took extra years to get there. Rask is another one who teams were patient about his development and played years as a backup. What does that have to do with his injury? The one thing that makes sense JJ, is playing your goalie 50 games and bringing in your prospect to play 30. With a Reimer, you can do that. I am not saying get Reimer, but using him as an example.
  15. Hahahahaha, I think he just realized someone was taking his picture... Look a camera!
  16. Had the Fan on the way home from work just now. Hartley said he was in fact giving Hiller the same chance Ramo got when Hiller went down earlier this year. He feels he owes him that. Hartley also said that Ortio hasn't played as good as he could this year, but puts in a lot of work in practice. It sounds like Ortio still needs to gain the confidence of coaches. I agree about the goalie coaches, I know they're not psychologists, but it's almost the part of the game that needs good coaching to help them out during slumps, as much as they need help with position. We could use an overhaul on all aspects of goaltending, goalie coach included.
  17. "Sometimes I feel like I am beating a dead horse..." GNR song quote. But going with Hiller yet again. Guess he has absolutely no confidence in Ortio. I don't like Ortio, but right now I don't like Hiller just as much and maybe I think hiller's play should warrant Ortio a try.
  18. It has been awhile since we posted here. Some think our goaltending is the problem others think something else or all encompassing. Now, on Flames Overtime last night after the game, a caller named Robert was irate about our team structure, particularly the D. The fact that our coaches and players continue to say, we gave them too many goals. Untimely Giveaways kill us, overall team defence kills us. Apparently we have, as an accumulation on paper, we have one of the best D corps in the league. How can we say that when most nights we let in more goals than we score? Does it have more to do with the team game or with the defence? I think goaltending is a part of it, but not the only thing.
  19. I find both Hiller and Ortio's styles similar. I guess more to the fact that they both go down. Hiller is always on his knees. Ortio always leaves his corners open.
  20. I get that our save percentages are low. How much of that is from the first few months? How much from recently? How much from Hiller or from Ramo? I think the save% is a reflection of how poor the team is playing in front of our goalies. Is it the chicken or the egg! We can go around in circles. The team isn't playing well enough for our save% to go up. Untimely give aways. Poor zone coverage. Poor possession numbers. I think it is all encompassing from the players and the goalies. I don't care if we have one of the best goalies, I don't think it helps if the team is playing the way ours has been all year. Could we have a few extra points, maybe, but we will never know. I hate that people tend to throw goalies under the bus when it's a team game. Look at when we had Kipper. How many times would our D just stand there and watch the other team play? If the other team is going to be in our end more often, I don't think save% are going to go down.
  21. Was it goaltending that has killed the oilers and the leafs? I think it has been the whole make-up of their teams. Toronto had the worst possession numbers over the years. I don't care how good your goalie is, if the other team has the puck more often than you then you're probably going to lose more than you win. I don't think goaltending has been the problem. It is a problem, but not the only one. A good goalie will be wasted if it hides our flaws. I believe we need better goalies, but I also believe we still have a long way to go before we are contenders and far from the end of the build. Our players are going to get better, yes, but so are edmontons and Arizonas. It's still going to be a dogfight to get in. We need to keep building and that includes getting a good goalie.
  22. Does this mean we go back to playing .500 hockey? Hiller hasn't been good. His pattern is he would have a good game then a stinker.
  23. It's good because they need to know whether he can do it and is deserving a contract.
  24. Surprise! Wow, you would think they'd call the most deserving. I guess they don't see Poulin as a long term guy?
