If I were Toronto and felt that Bernier wasn't the goalie going forward then yes. At the end of the year Hiller's deal is off the books while if they're done with Bernier then Calgary ends up eating that year that Toronto doesn't want anymore. Pat Steinberg thought that Calgary would need to add to the trade, but I think if Toronto isn't interested in Bernier anymore, we're the ones actually doing them a favour by taking him off next year's books and they're buying 4M+ in cap space. For some reason I don't see Tampa re-signing Stamkos. For me, it's mostly because of his play in the playoffs last year. He was pretty non-existent for the most part. I bet they use him as a piece to get that players to try get them over the hump in this year's playoffs.

I really don't understand the Cap. It was put in place to keep salaries from getting too high, making sure teams have a level playing field, and having GMs manage themselves. But the salaries keep getting inflated and teams have troubles by spending to the Cap, while some teams can't afford to pay what the "going rate" is. The going rate sure makes teams less competitive in the long run. I understand it's part of the game now, but I just don't think the inflated salaries is viable in the NHL as the revenues just aren't there to sustain it. Especially with teams that don't make money. There's no way you keep Russell. Although, I am not really interested in signing Russell anyway. We're so lucky to have Brodie on a friendly contract for a few years. He will be worth a lot more once his contract is up.

It's possible he was gassed by the third.

Ya, you never know. Boston got Rask for very little. That's the kind of deal we need to make. Mind you, those kinds of deals are rare now. Teams tend to know what they have nowadays.

I like the idea of taking a chance on Enroth. If we can add a defensive defence man/shut down guy, and from the article, it sounds like there could be more to him than meets the eye. Being on a tank Buffalo team his numbers would be lying for the most part. Although I haven't seen him much, it just sounds like he succeeded at every level so far, minus the NHL, which could be circumstance. Riemer could be an option? Sign both.

Which goals should he have had? Maybe the 2nd one over his shoulder? But buy then, he already made good saves that kept us ahead. I don't think the others were his fault.

I am not sure Anaheim would trade within our Division. LA didn't trade Jones to San Jose. They got him through Boston.

I don't agree that the D sorted itself out once Bridie came back. The team play and D have been more off than on while some had good games on an individual basis, they haven't as a unit. Yes the goaltending had been bad, but D coverage has been so spotty that you can't blame the goalies for everything. I think we are exactly where we should be for points in regards to team play.

I think Smid had his moments. There was that one shift, even though he shouldn't have been so deep in their end for so long, where he held it in the corner all on his own winning battles against 3 stars. I feel like he did some good and some bad.
-
The D played very good for the most part, especially Brodie. Ramo let in a softy early, Hamilton kicked one in and then Ramo let in another weak one. The Stars carried the play early and for most of the 1st. The Flames tried to chip away but couldn't buy a goal! Finally Backlund scored a goal where the goalie made 4 saves on him and looked like he was still going to shut the door on us. Backlund chipped it open. Niemi played good even though we came back he still made what could've been game saving saves. But Brodie took over and Hamilton topped it off tying the game.

I think Kipper was a great goalie who masked a lot that was wrong with the Flames, always chasing the ultimate center for Iginla. There were so many defensive brain farts where he was left alone. I could be biased, but that was how I saw it most of the time.

Well, something the tv guys talked about a few games back was playing as a five man unit. How many games could we say they've done that? Hartley talked about it post game after the win and it was possibly the Chicago one, that when we play this way we are hard to beat... So, does that mean he is preaching it but the players are not responding?
-
Especially when our possession numbers were so low, and how we are easily out worked in our end by bigger teams, I didn't think we had the right mix.

On paper yes. But when you have 4 or 5 offence first Dman, where is the D going to come from. When those offensive D guys aren't scoring or getting points, you're in trouble because it means the other team is out scoring us. Could our D be expected to score at the rate it did last year, especially the first half of the season? I never thought we had one of the best D's in the league, I thought we had one of the best offensive D's though, which is what worried me. Where was the D going to come from.

You can't compare leagues until the NHL catches up in revenue. It's in relation to the Cap I have a problem with.

I don't agree. But I think Bouma is definitely over paid. He is a 4th liner on a good team. He was lucky to be on the Flames. Backlund never plays a full season. I really liked Backlund. He has been disappointing the last few years though. I think Hamilton is overpaid. I think he should be 5M. Frolik had to be overpaid to sign as a UFA though.
-
That's the argument for Raymond and Engelland. The rest are just overpaid.

Is Treliving overpaying too many players? Raymond Engelland Bouma Backlund Hamilton Frolik Ramo Hiller Ramo is 1.5m over paid. Raymond is at least 1m more than what he is worth. Engelland is the same. I would've paid Bouma and Backlund a million less too. Hamilton I would've paid about 0.75m less, and possibly the same with Frolik. Although I understand the Frolik reasons.
-
I totally agree! Even 2M might have been ok. Not the 3.9m. I was ok with it too, but the price was off. I worry about that with Treliving. I am noticing a trend of overvaluing players and signing to higher than deserved salaries. Ramo Hamilton Engelland Raymond Backlund Bouma All overpaid, if even just a tad.

I have a feeling it was about him getting waived in the first place. It sounded like they meant, on his return they had to reconcile the relationship after things were said prior to being waived.

Stockton Heat Updates [2016-2017]
robrob1974 replied to travel_dude's topic in Calgary Wranglers and Flames Prospects
Ward taught the players how to be pro. He was a mentor type coach. That wouldn't work in the WHL. Everyone thought Dallas Eakins was the best thing since sliced bread when the Oilers hired him, but some coaches work at some levels and not for others. Maybe Huska is good with teens, but not players older than 20 or so? Who knows?
