I like it. I think he’s a goalie that got worn down and can bounce back. Thems are a lot of shots he took. Plus he’d take a third to half the load of play.

I think more years couldve been a steal.

    Here's the issue with Gillies.

He had a bad AHL season.

He was called up but not trusted to get any games.

His pevious year he played 11 and had a 3-5-1 record in the post Smith injury period.

Those are a indicator of his NHL readiness.

And you want to go into a season where he is used for 30-40 games?

He could turn it around and put up wins at the NHL level, playing every 2 of 5 games, but that's a huge risk to start a season.

He's going to be waived this fall if he fails to look better than any other goalie we have or sign.

It's tough.  If we were rebuilding, the appetite for him to play 30 games would be there.

He wasn;t here when we had Hiller and Ramo and the other guys.

Goalies get the chance because of no other solution or they play their way into the NHL.

Thats an 12-18-5 record over 35 games. Aren’t they back up numbers? 29 points

    although,

    95-29=66

Rittich would need to get 66 points in 47 games. This year he had 59points in 45 games (I think he had 42 starts) with a 27-9-5 Not going to work... although if it was average of starts he might get to 60 points in W’s. It’s a close call.

If I were Gillies, I would get my eyes checked. He seems to have a lot of problems with softies. He shuts the door after one or two but we saw how a non-confidence vote for your goalie brings low morale to team.

I would be more inclined to have Talbot at 1.75M on a 1year keeping it short term and Rittich at 2.5M on a 3 year deal. This is how I would position our Goaltending for now.

My bet is that our numbers work out to what we’ve paid for goal. I see Rittich and Talbot splitting the pot.

Will Rittich’s camp look for Koskinen kind of numbers though?

  4. I think Tkachuk gets a Nylander type deal. He’s not quite the face of the franchise or first go to guy so he gets a similar portion of the cap that Nylander gets. I’d put Tkachuk at 7.75-8m/yr. I would prefer 7-7.5 because I am cheap.

Appreciate the negative stuff to offset the positive stuff.

That's what makes this a good place for discussion.

Where I think we focus too much is on the the end of season results.

We were a team that performed really well for the majority of the season.

    We had issues.

    We fixed some of them.

There is no right way to build a contender.

Lightening in a bottle is what wins cups.

STL was worst in the league at one point.

It's going to be near impossible for them to do that again.

    TBL collapsed.

Is that going to happen again.

What I like is that this team has some of the things you need to build a contender.

Getting everything right and going to the finals is tough.

Fixing the little problems is a good start.

Understanding why some players are struggling is key.

Removing the negatives is as well.

I also think we could be close as well. The playoffs the team had could also be a wake up call to the group. Hope it was. It took nearly 3 games to get back on track. The team did very well in the regular season getting out of ruts. We assumed it would’ve happened again.

i think Talbot could be a good signing. I’d gamble on a two year deal on him. I’d prefer 3 but there’s a need to keep options open if Rittich and Talbot fall.

  6. I am one of the most critical and negative poster on here. Sorry for that. I do want this team to be a model of consistency and a perennial threat. I just don’t see it yet with this group and we do have good to great parts. There are holes and will always be holes.

But one of the things we don’t have is drive or killer instinct. I’d say Johnny and Benny are the ones with the highest compete on the team. The problem is that Benny has never taken the next step. Others have it as well, but we just aren’t quite there yet.

Plus the coach refused fused to fix parts of the roster that wasn’t working and then became a one line team.

There are a lot of great parts. The mix needs tinkering.

So sorry about it. I really don’t know what can be done to fix it. How many moves can Bt realistically make?

I think Talbot could be a good add. I’d honestly hope it is for a few more seasons than a 1yr.

We love to say if we could just get league average goaltending. I kind of think Talbot’s numbers could fall somewhere in the middle of those numbers with and not with Edmonton, which would equate to about league average.

    I agree with this.
I also wouldn't mind it at all. I think Talbot will be better playing behind a better team. Edmonton and Philadelphia weren't exactly models of defensive consistency.

I don’t think the Flames are either. We have a bit more structure but the amount of brain farts that our team had really handcuffed our goalies the last few years.

We need a goalie who can stop pucks when they're cold. the possession game we play leads goalies to go cold. Although we did the same with Hartley’s system as well so... I just think we aren’t fully there defensively yet.

only if we win it :)

in all seriousness, I 100% believe Smith is BT's #1 target for signing .. it will come down to dollars and Smith himself. Similar to Stone in the sense of , go check the market and then we'll talk .

I'll even add to this , why a big part of me believes Smith is back next year

He leaves for only one of 2 reasons

    1. he's offered considerably more than we are willing to pay

    2. Hes offered a starting job -- which is also the only way #1 happens

Hes at the stage of his career where its not about the payday , its about winning

name me one  remotely contending team that needs a starting goalie..maybe Columbus?

Hes an ultra competitive guy , he knows how close we are , its like unfinished business

BT WILL makes an offer .. will depend on the market and Smith himself

I think ewwwwwwww and then realize the other options aren’t there.

Smith was good in the playoffs. But I feel like last year was his last kick at it.

Id only sign him to 1yrs and reassess the next year.

I know this may ruffle some feathers but considering cap space and availability I wouldnt be totally opposed to resigning Smith 1 more year. On the condition he realizes he's there as a relief and mentor to Rittich.

I expect it too. And did before the playoffs. Rightly or wrongly I could tell that Rittich isn’t quite their guy (yet?). We don’t have any backup plans or succession plans yet. None of the prospects are ready.

i would sign him to a 3M deal and say if a guy passes him then it’s good to go with that guy.

I think the coaching staff did a great job scheduling and nurturing Smith back to top performance level. Win or lose with him now is how I see it.

It will be the other parts of our game that must determine where we go from here.

If the team pulls it together and Smith ends up shutting the bed I still won’t blame him for this series. He almost won us two more games but the team let him down in all 4 so far.

I'm just saying that if neither Rittich nor Zag nor Gillies can do the job, BT would be in the market.

Signing a declining goalie doesn't seem to make sense.

But that's just me at this point.

Smith could steal the MVP in the playoffs.

In which case, you have that option for next year.

    If you want to.

Yup, and for me, just because I think it’s the route they might go doesn’t mean I agree with it or want it to happen. They just seem so enamoured by Smith’s ability to play the puck and seemingly lack of confidence in Rittich that it’s possible. Smith kinda makes me sea sick, he’s so rocky whith his play. It’s been better but he shows signs of lacking confidence once in awhile.

there might be summer options but we thought that last summer, so I don’t know how they’re going to approach it.

Since the new guy is one year, it seems like they need to figure out his NHL potential sooner than then.

I doubt we hang onto everyone.

    Rittich - RFA

    Smith - UFA

    MacDonald - RFA

    Gillies - signed for 19/20

    Schneider - signed for 19/20

    Zadidulin - signed for 19/20

That's a lot of guys to manage.

I agree, but to assume one of them can take over won’t work either. They’re all a chance, including Smith. I don’t want to re-sign Smith, I’d rather resign him. But a short one year could just be insurance so they have a tandem that’ll work. Then they hope the new guy will steal an NHL job.

    One down, Nygard to go.

May not be NHL bound to start the season, but ya never know,

Probably maks it less likely for a one year deal with Smith.

Maybe more likely theyll sign a 1yr insurance deal with smith to bridge another year with Rittich to eventually bring in the new guy or have Parsons or Gillies develop further to have them fight for a spot the year after next.

I think that the Oilers need to do something like we did here in Calgary. Get a guy like Burke to come in assess, make quick changes, and mentor a young, promising GM with some experience. Clean house.

I think you’re on the right track which I think they thought they were on when hiring Nicholson. It’s obvious he is a bit inept.

If Oiler fans thought Chiarelli is bad then oh boy wouldn't Lombardi be a great hire. Was a good GM with LA but in his later years the game passed him by.

McCrimmon is going to Seattle. Even if Edmonton makes him a good offer, Seattle will match or beat it, I'm sure they really want him as he was a big part in building Vegas.

Interesting no Mark Hunter on that list. Best looking name on there is Sean Burke

Seattle has better odds of icing a better team in year 1. I get why someone would choose them over Edmonton.

Hopefully Rittich is ok. We are going to need both goalies in the playoffs.

Why would our own media tell everyone that our goalie can possibly have an injury

I may not be as old but I remember the '81 conference finals against Minnesota. Dino Ciccerelli was having a amazing playoff. At Minny games fans had green inflatable Dinos. At the Corral Flames fans had red Dinos hanging in a noose from a stick. I lived in Prince Rupert BC at the time and one of the big things was not having to watch the Nucks in those stupid yellow "V" unis for a while.

Edit: Sorry for continuing the off topic nostalgia.

    Get outta town!!!

i grew up in Rupert. I was 6 going on 7 in ‘81, but maybe lived in Queen Charlotte at the time. I lived there for half of grade 1.

I was an isles fan then. Ban wagon!

Maybe we should sign Billy Smith? Oh wait we have a Smith.

Should be interesting draft this year. You have to wonder what BT is going to do. It’s a nice potential trade chip although I do think we need to do some restocking of prospects tho

I think we could start a restock this offseason. A few players can be traded off for a pick or something along those lines to make way for some contract flexibility.

Don't want ot be a debbie downer but the West is wide wide open.  Any of the teams can beat each other.  League is really close nowadays and you only have to look back to 89 to see how close a 1st round series can be!    However over 7 games I like our chances especially in our division.   Whoever comes out of the central is going to be a hard matchup.

I want to see us cement runner up in the league so when TBL get knocked out in the second round we get home ice throughout!!

I feel the same way. I didn’t want to be a downer either, which I don’t thing is but see how others might think it.

    I’m excited too!

Not sure what all this worrying is about.

You ask why not us? The only reason I can think of is TB, and there is no guarantee they come out of their conference.😀

16 wins, one at a time, that’s all it’s going to take.

10 days to prepare with 3 practice games in between.

We are in excellent shape, with the easiest first round.

I think so too. I think it's the easiest, but is it going to be as easy as Canucks 1st round was for us a few years ago? I think it could be a touch harder.

  21. 2 minutes ago, travel_dude said:

Unfortunately, these guys will be studied, looking for weakness or tendencies.  Easy solution.  Back off if you have a nothing play.

I think that’s really important and a big part of hockey iq, understanding situations and when to do things, when to make a smart play or when to take a chance.

  22. 1 hour ago, conundrumed said:

I'm excited. We've got a really good team. Hopefully they stay loose. We can beat anyone over 7 games.

We have 3 solid lines, one in flux, good D, 2 worthy goalies.

    Why not us?

Yup! The West is for the taking. I think you’re right about beating any team, especially when we play “our game.”

When we are engaged and motivated to compete I think we have to potential to be unstoppable. And that’s where I come from when negative. I want more when I know they can do better.

That being said, I don’t expect them to go 16-0.

    Its gonna be good.
