lol I've already melted down a long time ago over this...I actually agree with you. I don't care if it's pee wee hockey, if Ortio is getting minutes it's a good thing. I don't believe for a second that this is because Laurent has moved up on their depth chart: He was struggling in the ECHL. Ortio should dominate. Perhaps after a brief loss of confidence, of course. I guess he should have stayed in SM Liiga. But this is far, far better than just watching the Heat play (we can all do that too). I consider Ortio's development now stagnated, but not destroyed. And I doubt the stint will be more than 15 games. Big changes are still coming.

Brossoit is really struggling in the ECHL right now. He convinced me in training camp that he is a legimate prospect, but by far on the bottom of our list, even adjusting for age. He is far more than 2 years away. 4-5, imho, if things go well for him. Ortio is an absolute minimum of 2 years out, if he gets playing time. He hasn't played yet this year, due to the number of goalies we have this in the system. If he doesn't get a decent amount of games in, then imho, it's a massive setback to his development. I would go as far as to say it's the difference between being a potential NHL starter, to never making the NHL. Sad. Gillies could in fact be our saviour. But he is also probably 2 years out. And, with the way we have spread our development resources out, it is clear that the Flames are banking on Gillies, and Gillies alone. Or just plain not thinking past this year. He's great, but it makes me nervous that he's the only impressive prospect we're properly developing right now. We have 3, if you go by what the Flames are saying. So, I agree with you, lol. NONE of them are EVER going to be stars in the NHL. We only have one prospect with that potential: Gillies. Or two, if we chose to develop Ortio.

Lol I've nothing against Ramo. I'll admit that I never agreed with the original trade that brought him here, but that wasn't specifically about him. But that's all in the past. I am concerned that we've clogged our development system with 27 year olds. That being said, Ramo should get his chance at some point, and I will be cheering for him when he does. I think it'll be soon.

woah.....Berra was just moments away from getting a shutout tonight... I was about to post on here that he's gonna get the shutout callup....and they just scored on him. My guess is they'll play Ramo soon enough.

We've watched Kipper let in 100's of these goals, and never spoken of it. Even before he dropped off. The same can be said of Ramo in his NHL game. And, his first pre-game in Calgary was, in fact, a horror-show. An absolute horror show. Did he get better? Yes. Did he get brilliant? No. Did he scare the coaches? I think so. We're talking about a guy with multiple youtube videos of lettings goals in from one end of the rink to the other. And he showed us why, as soon as he got here. Jmac also made some nice saves. He's 3-0-1, his save percentage is the same as last year, and his save percentage is the same as Ramo's. He hardly got any playing time in the preseason. Struggling with the puck along the boards is common among goalies that haven't played much with their defense/wingers. I'm not saying he's our saviour. I'm just saying that we're experiencing a small miracle as a team right now, and the grass is very likely not greener on the other side. Should we play Ramo? yes. Should we "develop" him if he sucks? no. Ramo Has been given a chance, and he failed to take advantage of his first one. Jmac is already proven after many years, and the coaches made the right decision in terms of getting wins, by going with him. Ramo Will get more chances. but not 50 chances. I think, at his age, 10 chances would be fair. If he pulls it together, he may have an NHL career ahead of him. Not personally betting on it.

I actually agree with this, 100%. I don't agree that we should want Jmac to get pasted 10-0. I don't agree that Ramo is better than Jmac. I don't agree that Ramo is an NHL goaltender. I don't agree that we are in a RUSH to see what Ramo offers, or that we need to "develop" him at his age. But I think that any Flame's goalie, at his development stage, should get 10 NHL games minimum, to see what they're made of. It just may not be as soon, or as urgent, as some on here want it to be. When it happens, I'm not going to cheer against Ramo. Or want him to get pasted 10-0. But I wouldn't bet against it either.

    Goaltending

100%. Absolutely. I sort of get that there are those who have an arguement for Ramo (although it's a very poor one imho). But I don't understand how anybody couldn't like Jmac, cheer for him, or want him to do well. Either as a player or a fan. He's just that kind of person and player.

? So, now what...are condelences in order? Another solid win, with steady goaltending. I know this wasn't the 10-0 loss you were hoping for phoenix, but at least he let in a couple? trying to look on the bright side...

There was not a single sentence in the post you just made that I could even relate to in any way. And I mean, I looked to see if there was a sentence that I could agree with to find some common ground. Even if you're right, and the rest of the world is wrong (including Hartley, and whoever else is behind this conspiracy).... Can you at least wish Jmac, and the Flames well? i don't think that's too much to ask.

I've somewhat given up on the season before it started, and I'm paying way more attention to the players in this year's draft than I am the Flame's current standings. FYI: Sam Reinhart is shaping up to be an incredible superstar, early on in this season. Think: Playing better than Baertschi did in Junior, but a year younger. Very, very few human comparables in this world (if he keeps it up). Yet, I don't actually Want the Flames to lose any one particular game, even though I actually have a good reason to. I'm just amazed that people would post for a 10-0 pasting because they didn't get to see their favourite goalie play. Amazing. p.s....why would he be your favourite goalie? Because of some interview with Feaster? I see no other reason. Regardless, I don't care if he's the 2nd coming of Patrick Roy, I've no idea why anyone here would wish for the Flames to lose 10-0 unless they get to see their favourite goalie.

You made some good points in your post, but in terms of "obvious", I think we have to at least recognize that JMac has played a big part in giving us a winning record, and at times has been spectacular. He is also the only NHL -proven goalie we have. A backup, yes. But a backup for contenders and Stanley cup champions. And, at times, a successful starter for some very dodgy NHL teams. While I recognize the valid points you are making, I would not consider them obvious, but rather quite speculative. In particular, you are making an assumption that JMac is like some kind of battery that will "run out of juice" if played more than, say, 10 games. In reality, he's at an age that a lot of goalies just start to enter their prime, and may very well be better than he ever was. He's been a starter for some bad NHL teams, and he's been a backup for some incredible NHL teams, filling on back-to-back nights, never really having in from of him at their most defensively conscious. He has played as many as 49 NHL games in a season, and did just fine. I don't think any goaltender his age should play more than 60 games. But to think that he will wear out, is not all obvious, but highly imaginative. It's fairly clear that many on here just "WANT" Ramo to be the starter, because they do. And I get that, fine. But we should be happy that we have Jmac. Instead of saying "Jmac is finding success and helping us win, BUT... Ramo Ramo Ramo Berra", Can we just say: "Jmac is finding success and helping us win, Woo!" ?

    Goaltending

IMHO, Ramo is a known commodity too, in that he's sucked at the NHL level. And at the AHL level I know there's flaws in what I've just said. But I wish people could just be happy for JMac and stop dreaming that Ramo will be part of a future he'll never be part of. As soon as we're talking rebuild, we're talking Gillies, Ortio, and Brossoit. Yeah, we gotta wait. That's how goalie development rolls. I don't care what we signed Ramo for, or how smart or stupid that decision was. We're here, we're now, and Jmac is winning. Jmac is our now, and our future is Gillies, Ortio, and Brossoit.

    Goaltending

True. Realistically, we just played one some horrible team in terms of defense as well, so let's not get too excited about those first 8 goals. We need to be better all around, in every position, except some of the support roles. I'll agree that our defense and goaltending will keep us in the bottom 10, and it should take a higher priority. But only a slightly higher priority. The closest we have is left wing, but much of that relies on Cammi who is aging and may not stay here the whole seaason. Even if it weren't for defense, our forwards would keep us in the bottom 15. There's not a single strength on this team that would get us in the playoffs. Yet, anyway. Better things are coming.

Lol,,, you made it look like Taylor was still here I would agree with you on the flashes of brilliance....Burke has already made it clear what he thinks of flashes of brilliance, and that's with 20-year olds. 27 year olds.... But yes, we'll know a lot more 10 games in.

I actually agree with this, at least partially. Reto was good, but not great, in his AHL home opener. I do suspect he may actually be the better goalie between himself and Ramo, although I agree that Ramo outplayed him, at least slightly, in the preseason. IMHO, you are also correct that JMac is the perfect backup. Any contender would be glad to have him as a backup. But, for us, he may have to do as a starter. From what I've seen so far, he is the better goaltender of both Ramo and Berra. Yes, people have pointed out that this might change, and we've only played two games. Or, it might not change. Ultimately, what matters is which two goalies are up here. I would personally expect Berra to be coming up shortly unless Ramo suddenly turns into the goalie many on here want him to be. I know I'm getting ahead of myself and we need to give Ramo a fair chance. But I completely agree with you that a very likely outcome is that Berra comes back up. In that event, would Ramo go back down, or bolt for Russia? I'm not sure if, technically, he can go back to the KHL this year. But I think he could bolt for Russia all the same. And, that would put an actual prospect back in the Heat's starting position.

Hmm. I wrote a bunch. Then I decided it's pointless. That kind of sums it up. It would be nice, if it turns out that I'm right, that I can continue posting in this thread without being called pretentious. Just a dream of mine for a few months down the road. Can I congratulate JMac on a well-played game tonight, or would that be seen as poor sportsmanship on my part?

kehatch: with all due respect, those are very outdated statistical concepts you're using. I also earn a living working with performance related data. Maybe more of an offline conversation. But by your logic, the only thing we learned from our two more recent floods: 2005 and 2013, is that they were freak events that will likely not happen again for another 150 years. I do want Ramo to be good. But I want all our goaltenders to be good. Remember when you said that the best goaltender will get the playing time, "simple"? That's Jmac right now and we all know it.

    Goaltending

I don't think that's a fair comment. You will notice that the early criticisms of Ramo are similar in many ways to how we treated Danny Taylor. We were unhappy with his lateral movement. After his first NHL game, we wrote him off for it. Both played against elite NHLers. The only difference I see is that Danny Taylor actually has a winning NHL record (the only goalie we have from last year that can say this), and our best save percentage from last year. I was heavily criticized on here for wanting to give Taylor, who is the same age as Ramo, a chance. As a 26 year old backup. I was told that his lateral movement meant he could never make it in the NHL, even as a backup. Even though he won games and stopped most shots, in the NHL. Now Ramo's 27, doing worse than Taylor when he was 26, and we're likely going to lose a large stretch of games because we don't want to give up on him as our bonafide, unproven starter, because we wish him to be that. I'm not trying to be ugly here. I think that we Should give him a chance. I think it's the right thing to do, on principal and in practice. What bothers me is that we're not going to do it for principal, or for what's best for the team. We're going to give him a chance because Feaster's reputation is invested in him, and because he signed him to a big fat contract. Had we given some of our other goaltenders a better chance (I'm Not just talking about Danny Taylor), I don't think we would be in the position we are in now. I fully agree with everyone who doesn't want to give up on Ramo. But if it was based on merit, there have been a lot of other goalies in this organization that we should have extended that chance to first. Going forward, I think this should apply to our other goaltenders as well. I'm not sure how it'll happen, but I really hope that, assuming Ortio plays well in the AHL, they give him starter minutes. And I wish the same for Berra as well. I really hope the Flames figure a way to properly develop their vast goaltender collection. I hope it applies to Joey MacDonald as well. Quite frankly, he's the best goaltender in our whole system right now. On merit, he's our starter. I think he'll rise to the top by the end of the season, but if we were to be fair and honest, he would have played our first game, and we would have worked Ramo into at least 10 backup games before making a decision. It'll all come out of the wash. I'm actually less concerned with how Ramo and Jmac are being managed, and more concerned about how our future goaltenders are being managed.

Well put. It was the right move, and I commend the Flames for it. Brossoit needs the minutes, and now he'll get them. To be honest, I don't think he was quite ready for the AHL, but I was impressed with his play nonetheless. The extra development time gives him the best chance of coming back next year better than ever, and forcing the Flames to make even tougher decisions. As Gillies, Ortio, and Brossoit mature, the net could potentially be even more crowded over the next two years. I hope it is. On Ramo: He didn't look or play or perform like an NHL goaltender, imho. I know there's a lot of love for the guy on here, so I'm sure there will be lots of "he had no chance", etc. That will buy him a few more games. I guess we'll see.

Oh no....... is there going to be a "Flames Change" TV series? Or another run of "young guns"? You're probably right lol...I'm just hoping they do this rebuild right and we end up filling those seats because of pure awesomeness on the ice. I've been waiting since the early 90's and I can wait a little longer.

I would also put Gillies as one of the entire organization's top prospects. But, in my own mind, I see Ortio an Gillies as neck and neck, with Ortio out to slight lead. I don't have a solid arguement to put Ortio out to a slight lead, that's just how I see it. But I do think there is a solid arguement that Ortio is discounted in this organization right now. I know some people were possibly dissapointed with Brossoit in training camp. I was actually very impressed, and now consider him a legitimate goaltending prospect. He would have to have an extremely solid year, or two years, before putting him in the category of Gillies or Ortio. But, prior to the preseason, I really didn't see what the fuss was about. A pylon could have done well backstopping the team he was on. In the Flames training camp, however, he looked like, in my mind...a legitimate goaltending prospect his age should look like. I can understand why some people put Gillies well ahead of Ortio. But rather than argue that point, I think it's very fair to say that Anything can happen with young goaltenders and the more you develop properly, the better your odds. So you don't have to be an Ortio fanatic to want him to get proper development. From that perspective, the numbers game is unfortunate in that it hurts the development of our most legitimate prospects (at least the way it looks now). Yes, we can ride it all on Gillies. But we've done that before. With Irving, with Trevor Kidd, with many others. No matter how good Gillies looks, if there's one thing we've learned by now is that it doesn't hurt to have more than one trick up your sleave.
