    Goaltending

I was trying to be nice. I never said that Ortio was broken after one game. In reallity, the organization panicked and banished him for two years, making sweeping, generalized opinions. Put another way, Berra is being put into an unrealistic situation tonight, and there is a high probability that the organization will make unrealistic decisions based on the outcome of this game. That is their record. It won't actually matter whether Berra is broken or not. If you think it's a good idea, that's fair, but you should be prepared for whatever baseless decisions follow. And my apologies for discussing Ortio and Brossoit and Gillies on a "Goaltenders" thread. It's almost as if I talk about Ortio like he was the Heat's starting goaltender. Oh wait, he is. And, so many on here said that would absolutely not happen this year. Am I talking about him too much, or there are number of key contributors on here too embarrassed to mention his name? Get used to it DirtyDeeds, Ortio's not going away on goaltender discussion threads. At all. Most of the goaltenders you're hyperfocusing on will be going away, however. But if it makes some more comfortable: Ramo, Ramo, Berra, Berra, Jmac. (oh wait, one of them's already gone)

It matters, in a way, because it has the potential to crush Berra and destroy his confidence. Like when they put Ortio in the AHL too early and he got blasted 9-0, and they banished him to Europe. (took him two years to get back with the Heat) Like when they did the same thing to Brossoit this year, he got pasted 9-0, and they banished him to the ECHL. If you believe Berra has NHL potential, then it matters. Because he may not after tonight. I'm not in the camp that believes he's NHL material, so it matters not to me. But it's a strange thing to do to a goalie you've invested resources into. I don't really have an explanation for why things like this take place for the Flames. The best theory I can come up with, is that maybe the Flames see goaltenders like penny slot machines. If they try enough bizarre gambles, eventually something will work and they'll look brilliant....smarter than everyone else. Maybe it'll work eventually. But they'll sure have to destroy a lot of careers to get there.

We Truly are clueless with goaltenders, right through the organization. Don't mean to doom them ahead of the game...anything's possible. But the fact that it's happening does boggle the mind.

JMac wouldn't have been the goalie that I'd punted, but none of that really matters. He may have been the only goalie of the three that the Flames Could eliminate. Ramo's contract makes him un-movable. Reto Berra ...no comment. Let's just say I'm afraid to watch tonight's game. No idea why you would start Any goaltender against Chicago for their first NHL game. Especially one that's been getting the yank in the AHL. It's pretty important for the Flames to get to a more realistic number of goalies. I am Really hoping to hear today that JMac gets claimed. Sending him down to the AHL doesn't solve anything for us. It just means even more changes are coming.

All I know, is while all this complete nonsense is going on trying to get an NHL starter out of three non-NHL starters,.... Ortio has three wins out of three games with the Heat now. A 0.929 save percentage And a 2.14 GAA. In otherwords, so far he's outplayed Berra. And he's looking like he has the potential to be one of the top goaltenders in the AHL. That gives us not one, but Two legitimate goaltending prospects. Let the nonsense continue, I don't care. Just keep developing this kid.

If Joey doesn't get claimed, then I don't think the shuffling is over. The Flames are likely going to give Berra a shot. If it's anything like Berra's AHL performance, it's not going to go well. If JMac is claimed, Berra can stick around to back up Ramo, and Ramo will probably see a lot of games. If Berra does impress....which is what the Flames obviously want to happen...then yeah. JMac could see a lot of AHL games.

Gibson's better at this point in time, but it's very, very close. In a straight-up trade, I would take Gibson over Gillies. But as to who will actually have the better NHL career, I'd say it's almost a flip of the coin right now. With some odds going to Gibson, yes. On a separate note, I find discussions about Gibson, Gillies, Ortio, even Brossoit...far more interesting than JMac, Ramo, and Berra, to be honest. From what I've seen so far, I do not believe we have any mature NHL-starter calibre goalies in our system. But we do have NHL-calibre prospects. And that's the important part.

    Goaltending

oh yes he could. He's already done worse...in the AHL. Pulled right out of two games. He's not getting the callup based on his performance, that's for sure.

    Goaltending

I do too. As long as he gets claimed, though, I think it may work out better for him. And his final Flames numbers for this year: 2013-14 Calgary Flames NHL 7 0 2 417 22 0 0 3.17 3 3 1 170 0.885 He currently has the best GAA, and winning percentage, with the Flames. And his save percentage is basically tied with Ramo. The Flames had to let someone go. I'm not sure they made the right choice, but I do understand it. I fully expect JMac's winning percentage, GAA, and Save Percentage to be the best of all Flame's goaltenders by year's end.

    Goaltending

Happy Days!!! Would be nice to get confirmation. As long as Ortio is starting in the AHL, I think we're on the right track. If he gets regular starts, I believe he could be one of the AHL's top goaltenders by year's end. Berra may be the least-deserved callup of the year. But JMac has been bad. I still think JMac is more likely to bring us wins than Ramo or Berra over the course of the season, but hey, that just brings us closer to getting Reinhart... I do have a mild concern of: The rumour not being true, or JMac not being claimed...

    Goaltending

I'll buy that. But, it's too bad they gave up their 2nd pick....and that brings us back on topic: Ramo.

    Quiet here tonight..... Um....
  13. jjgallow

    Goaltending

Agreed....actually, I think bad (or mediocre) goaltending can sometimes be very good for development of a team. They learn to be much more defensively aware, and take less for granted. I think the 2004 Flames did much of their development under very suspect goaltending, part of the reason they became so strong defensively. Then, all of a sudden you throw Kipper into the mix, and Bam. But, we also so what happened to the team after years of great goaltending....we took it for granted.

Are we.....agreeing....in the goaltending thread? Spooky...must be Halloween Exactly. Trading for another goalie would be a horrible blow to the franchise. I don't think people realize what an opportunity we have in these next two years to build an unforgettable, incredibly successful team. If people did, there's no way anybody would sacrifice Any of that for a fool's shot at a first-round playoff exit this year. Which is all a top goaltender could hope to get us. Exactly. 3 long seasons, most likely. Although I do hope that season 3 is filled with hope and huge strides forward. We are not getting better right now. People don't want to hear it...but we're getting worse. Yes we are. We probably won't bottom out until next season, and then start to come back up. Sorry. Those who stay along for the ride will be rewarded. Eventually. I still think Ramo's a dud, BUT....I agree with this. A lot. If we Were to panic on something, it wouldn't be goaltending. It wouldn't be our forwards. It would be our defence. From a prospect perspective, I am on the verge of panic. In terms of the Flames lineup, it doesn't matter that much right now. I was a little shocked and horrified that we didn't draft a single defenceman until the third round this year. Not that we should have targeted them, but...common.....three first-rounders and not one defenceman? We desperately need a Minimum of two possible first-line defensive prospects, and at Least one on the right-hand side. In a proper rebuild, this would be the second thing we went for (after goaltenders), due to the time it takes to develop them. If we trade Cammy or Hudler this year, I think this is what we have to get. A young, promising defensive prospect. Or two.

    Goaltending

I think save percentage usually does a decent job of accounting for the number of shots, personally. But I Still agree with you that it's only half the statistical story, and only half the statistical story at that. Because there's also wins. I think Ramo's wins are reasonable, actually, given our defense (2 wins in 6 games). But compared to JMac's winning percentage, again Ramo loses at this early stage. All that together makes up the stats, or "half" the story. The other half...the intangibles...... Ramo has made the Best saved of any Flames goalie, and also let in the softest goals between him and JMac. If Ramo were 20 years old, I would put more weight on his best saves, as a sign of potential. But he's not. So I place more value on the consistency. And in that, I see a flashy goaltender that's failed to develop a level of disicpline, form, and focus required at the NHL level. I also see it making him very vulnerable as the video tape gets out to other teams.

    Goaltending

I probably shouldn't be saying this, but after last night: I would rather have a goalie that is occasionally off-position than one who is turned 180 degrees and facing the inside of the net. I feel bad saying it, but we all saw that...

    Goaltending

So with all your gloating, are you 100% sure Berra being pulled was a sole indication of his play and not a move to spark the team, as it is common a goalie will get the yank in hopes of igniting the team. I've never seen a goalie get yanked purely for one reason or the other...it's always been a combination of the two. That said, I'm not trying to sound like the biggest supporter of Ramo and Berra, but at least I'm getting behind them and hoping for improvements. I'm not rooting for anyones failure just because I like someone else more. If Ramo and/or Berra find us success, great. If Ortio finds us success (at the AHL level), even better. Because he has the upside that we need, and the youth to sustain it over many years. I think it's great to hope for improvements in all our players. But reallistiaclly, Berra and Ramo are already well into their prime. And other teams are learning their weaknesses as they get more exposure.

WOOO!!! http://theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1011226 I've never said "I told you so" over a goaltender doing badly. But Ortio saving our sorry azzes and leading the Heat to an unlikely victory through his stellar play in the AHL? Now that's out of the way.....Welcome to your new AHL starter, folks. Face it now, or face it in another 10 games. Go ahead and tell me this is premature...I've got lots more of these images Gsus Berra....I actually thought he'd do better than this, and I've never even been that impressed by him. That leaves Ramo and Jmac up top. Still not convinced Ramo is the starter. Tonight leaves me more unconvinced. Now now DirtyDeeds, you know I'm far to mature for that.... But in all seriousness, this is a Very good thing for the Flames no matter what your position is here. Berra and Ramo were never part of our future cup-winning team. Ortio could be. If we develop him as such this year, we're all that much closer to where we need to be.

Thanks for the pics Carty, Good points. I have to say, the first thing I saw in those pictures was a whole bunch of Yotes, and not a lot of Flames. In both of those pictures, JMac is the only thing between 3 Yotes players, and the net, at point-blank range. So...while I agree with your assessment....did it really matter where he was?

    Goaltending

Well.....we're 1/8th through the season: So far, I don't see an NHL goalie in Berra's record, at least not yet. Currently ranked 26th in the league...he needs to get more consistent. Maybe if he was doing this at a younger age: http://theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=4979 Very hot and cold....kind of like what we've seen from Ramo so far, but at the AHL level. Good game, then gets pulled. Has another good game, then not so much. Ortio, meanwhile, is wasting away in the ECHL but at least has two shutouts to show for it so far: http://echl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=3703 Brossoit was blown out in the AHL and really struggled in the ECHL....currently backing up Berra, doesn't look good for him this year. JMac has been Jmac....and got us some wins. Ramo: Hot and cold. Has played better than I thought he was capable of. Has also played as bad as I'd feared. We'll be 20 games into the season before we know what we have, imho.

I am just going to say that I disagree with a number of the points made in here. It's probably not worth going around in circles at this point. I do agree that it's far to early to make a decision on Ramo, and he needs more games.
  24. jjgallow

    Goaltending

True. It's gonna take a while...2 years absolute minimum, imho 100% agree. Except for the part that our forwards needed focus. I think what happened is that Feaster was getting direction to "patch" the team with a soft rebuild, this the focus on forwards. Had we been "intellectually honest", we would have started our rebuild with defensemen. They take much longer to develop.

I'd just like to say that nobody here has "had it out" for Ramo. And the only thing getting "old" is him. I'm sure he's a great guy. But...he's 50th overall for NHL goaltenders...and I'm being nice there by using his save percentage. http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?fetchKey=20142ALLGAGALL&viewName=summary&sort=savePercentage&pg=2 Even if he was a young prospect, I'm sorry...but this would be cause for concern. I'd also like to say that nobody here had it out for Ramo PRIOR to this year either. There just weren't any compelling reasons to Like him, other than trusting Feaster, or trusting the KHL's award system, neither of which I do. His numbers in the KHL were Never very good, he's just always had a very popular goaltending style that fans have appreciated. Of the top 10 worst goals of all time on Youtube, he has at least 2 of them. I didn't upload the videos, I just saw them is all. His last NHL and AHL performance, as we know, was disastrous. Although...I should note that his performance then was actually Better, stats-wise, then what he's giving us now. There are Very few examples of sub-par KHL goalies coming to the NHL and doing well. There are exactly Zero examples of goalies who were blown out in the NHL, sub-par in the KHL, and then did well coming back to the NHL. Zero. There just Weren't any good reasons, that I could see, to Like him, other than taking Feaster's word for it, which I rarely do. If I am missing something, I apologize, but I've never had anything against him. I've just failed to see what a few on here apparently see as reasons to favour him over Many other good goaltenders we already have in our system. None of which are true NHL starters, but then neither is he. At least not yet. And he's not exactly making a case for himself right now. I understand that we have brutal defense, brutal PKs, etc. So do lots of other teams. What I don't understand is how people blatantly ignore the obvious fact that JMac has been subject to all these same conditions, and Doesn't get blown out. He still finds us wins, he keeps his save percentage reasonable, and he's a great person. So, maybe we should "back up" here. Because if we were going strictly off merit, we'd be a lot more interested in JMac's success against all odds, than explaining Ramo's failures. I might be inclined to suggest that some on here have it out for JMac.
