  1. +1 (something that doesn't show up on Kessel's stats most game nights)

Well, Ortio may just ruin my dreams of a high draft pick. All the same, it's sure fun to watch the kid. Anything's possible now.

Sure. Most likely, that's the case. And it suits me fine, because I'd like to see Ortio win a championship in the AHL and I'd also like to see us get a decent draft pick this year. But "temporary" as it may be, everything has changed.

Me too. Like others have said, it's voodoo. Ortio and Gillies are both soo good, both could so easily flop or so easily become top 5 in the NHL. A lot of it is luck (you can never have too many goaltending prospects), and a lot of it is development (oh...actually, you can have too many)

Admittedly, I agree. What if Calgary paid down Hiller's contract to a reasonable price? Maybe Tampa Bay? If Tampa had a half-decent backup, I'd put them as the best team in the league. And, Tampa has a highly unusual surplus of right-handed defensemen. Maybe for one of their prospects? Or a pick.

Do any of our goaltenders have those keys right now? I see it like this: Which of our goaltenders are of the right age and skill level to win us a cup in the next ten years? Hiller: No Ramo: No Gillies: Maybe Ortio: Maybe MacDonald: ? No's are expendable. And interchangeable. And readily available on the free agent market for the right price. 'm not saying we can afford to lose Hiller and Ramo at the same time. I'm saying we don't need both. And replacements (Thomas Vokoun, Tim Thomas, etc) are readily available. Patrick Roy is also a proven starter, but he is 49 years old. Hiller is turning 33 in a few weeks. He had a great start, but even then it wasn't like in his prime. He is starting to show that he is "Over the Hiller". Still lots of value there, but the only way he's winning anyone a cup is as a backup, on a contender, and this year. I would argue that 20 games in, this discussion will be much too late. The discussion is early, yes. Too early? Not so sure. Thanks DD! I like to think I'm growing up, but that's because I like fiction Whatever happens, I think we are in for a real treat in net. Just wait until Gillies enters the scene.

Is trading Hiller or Ramo an option? IMHO, I think we could get a good return for Hiller. Hiller would make a fantastic backup on a contender. Then you keep Ramo and Ortio up here. Or, send Ortio back down until Gillies is ready to take over in the AHL, and let Ramo be our starter for the remainder of the season. The bottom line: We have too many NHL calibre goalies (3) if you consider Ramo one of them. And, Gillies will be knocking on the door.

Bottom line, it was a great performance (posts or not), that more people should be happy on here about, rather than downplaying because it was one of our prospects. Ever since Kipper, we've been weird with goalie prospects. That's going to change soon. It will be an adjustment, but a good one

Not sure Ramo has anything to do with last night's game, but: Ramo quite frankly hasn't been very good, in NHL, period. Some flashes of brilliance diluted in an ocean of inconsistency. On one hand, Ortio's performance was only one game. On the other hand, it is consistent with his play since October, and his overall development curve. I think we need to decide something: With Ramo, he'll have a bad stretch of games as a 29 year old. We'll say: He need to play more and he'll get better. With Ortio, he now has 10 NHL games under his belt, has beat out most of our regulars in those games, and has shown steady improvement (including this recent shutout). Our response to the shutout cannot be "it was just one game". Ortio's been a full time goaltender in our system for a long time now, and last night's performance should not come as a shock. It wasn't just one game. The question is: If we really believe that the poor play of a 29 year old Ramo will improve if we just keep throwing games at him... What will happen if we throw those games at a 23 year old who's already playing better than him? Just wondering.... Anyway, it's really not about Ramo. It's about Hiller and Ortio.

Ortio up with the Flames now, http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=747652 Hoping he gets to play a game. Always a chance.
  13. It's like Flyerfan said. The cap hit, plus what it would cost to get him, likely kills this trade imho. Now, if Toronto traded him for next to nothing, that would be another matter altogether. But more likely, I would expect toronto will expect a high price for him. And ....I would expect that there is at least one team dumb enough to pay that price (enter Oilers? Rangers? lol). Between the prospects we'd have to give up to get him, the lack of character (probably overblown), and the cap hit which never ends.... Nah. Perfect fit when only considering position, and goals. Consider any other factor, it's tough.
  14. As always, I agree with Flyerfan

Yet another shutout for Ortio. http://theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=4090 That's his third of the year, and good for a .942 save percentage for December. Pretty much as hot as it gets.

It's really nothing personal, and I'm sorry if it comes across that way. What does that even mean? Agree with all of the above...except the part where you said "right now it is working in Calgary". I would say, it Was working. And we need a few more games to determine whether we're in a skid or a trend.

    Goaltending

I totally agree with this, in general, but come away with a different angle on it. Mostly because I don't consider Ramo a prospect. IMHO, for the reasons above, as soon as one of our prospects is able to log significant NHL minutes, we should give them that opportunity, freeing up another spot in our development system. For, like you said, the numbers game. The more goalie prospects we have, the better. Thus the CJ Motte signing suggestion. I don't believe goalies should be rushed. But honestly, I think Ortio is ready. And I don't think Gillies is far behind (we won't know until we see him spend some time in the AHL). MacDonald won't be ready any time soon imho....at least one more year of junior. Where I end up taking another angle, is really Ramo. He will be 29 this offseason. Now I KNOW goalies take longer to develop. But 29 year old goalies are Not prospects lol By all accounts he is already showing overall decline, despite a couple very strong shutouts. He has more wins this year, but that has a lot more to do with the team in front of him. Treliving and Burke are not married to the guy like past management has been. He is ranked 35th in the NHL for goaltending. That IS good enough to potentially be a backup. But not a starter. The thing is, he was just never a good fit here. We have one, possibly two prospects capable of filling that backup role. And possibly doing a better job at it. I don't expect him to get traded, because he has no value. But I can see Hiller getting picked up at the trade deadline. If I was a contender, I would want Hiller as a backup. I would expect we'll see Ortio pushing his way into the lineup as early as this season. And then the whole dynamic will change.

I have what is likely to be a highly unpopular suggestion, but I'll throw it out anyway. CJ Motte. I think we should try and sign him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._J._Motte I think we could use one more strong prospect in our system within the age bracket of our rebuild. We have two. Three would make me feel "secure" in our goaltending pipeline. I'm making some fairly big assumptions which are both unpopular and unlikely to be accepted: Ramo's unlikely to be around next year. I don't mean to pick on him, he's just not good enough and that's that. Maybe for another team, but unlikely anyone else would pick him up. Hiller's got a good chance of getting traded to a contender at the deadline. And he is also in decline, despite a very strong start this season. Ortio and Gillies are both knocking on the door in a Big way. The common belief on here is that Ortio may make the Flames next year, and Gillies will start in the AHL. In that case, Gillies will still need a backup to share the load, and CJ Motte would make for a fantastic duo. But I'll take it one step further: There is a very Real possibility that Ortio will do more than make the team next year. Ortio may end up sharing starter responsibilities. Ramo may not be here. Hiller just won't play the same number of games he did this year. IF he's even here. Which all means...that Gillies may Also get some NHL callup time next year. Maybe....even, possibly, as a backup to Ortio. Which would leave us bone-dry in the AHL. I think we might just have room to develop one more goaltending prospect. And, there is a possibility of actually Needing one more. As early as next season. There's my turkey-induced rant. I don't expect it to go down well, but thought I'd put it out there anyway.

well, not really http://www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm?fetchKey=20152ALLGAGAll&sort=savePercentage&viewName=savePercentageLeaders It'll probably start off that way, but don't be surprised to see Ortio challenge for the starter position in a very short period of time. Even now, I think he would give Ramo a serious run for his money. Give him a little experience next year, he'd be knocking on the door with Hiller in a relatively short period of time. Potentially. Ortio just had another 30 save performance for a .944 in December. http://theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=4090 And don't be surprised if it's not long before Gillies challenges Ortio too.

I actually forgot Ramo by accident, was not intentional. That being said, he's just not good enough. Hiller and Ramo are 20th and 21st in the league, and dropping fast. They had a strong start to the season. I will give Ramo that. It doesn't make him a true starter. Possibly a backup on a hot streak would be more appropriate. I'm excited about having that goaltender that can stay in the top 5. I believe Ortio and Gillies both have a shot at it.

    Goaltending

So true. I would rather have a Canadian goaltender in there, but the harsh reality is that we've fallen behind in our goaltender development (at junior level and below). We are very fortunate to have Hiller and Ortio. There, fixed that for you BTW, Ortio is currently the best goaltender in the AHL if you look at December. And he was top 5 in November as well. Take away that ugly September performance and he is on pace for his best season yet. Don't be surprised if he gets callups in the second half. http://theahl.com/stats/gamebygame.php?id=4090 p.s....and that's nothing compared to Gillies, who is back on the leaderboard now after three consecutive shutouts. He is on pace for his best season ever. He's clearly the hottest goaltender in US College hockey...again, if you ignore his ugly start. http://www.uscho.com/stats/overall/division-i-men/2014-2015/

I always felt that the workload affected him just like everyone else, and he was just good enough to still be great even with it. I wish we had seen what he could do with a lesser workload. All I want, is a goalie that can play a really strong 16-20 game stretch.

I think pretty much on here would trade all our current starters, and all our current prospects, for just one 23 year old Kipper. The problem is, Kipper was not particularly special at 23. We do already have prospects as good as or better than what Kipper was at their age. A lot of it is development, and a lot of it is luck. I think we are fortunate to have both Ortio and Gillies. Unlikely that they'll both become starts (but possible). Having two, gives us some odds to work with that one will lead us. Maybe.
