Don't get me wrong, I agree. Too early to make a final judgement. and I Don't want them to subject Ortio to this yet either. And I also agree that our biggest problem is defense, not goal. Put honestly, at this early stage: Reto is better than Ramo, and Ramo is better than our defense. And Reto is not NHL material. That, unfortunately, is where we're at.

BTW, imho, at some point we are going to have to realize what we have in Reto Berra. Which isn't an NHL goalie. Very, very close, but not an NHL goalie. I can only imagine how popular this statement will be. Let me just say that I do think Berra is better than Ramo. I just don't think that says much, unfortunately.

He sure could. Is it likely? not super likely, but better odds than Smid delivering us the Stanley cup anytime soon. One thing I don't like, is that we threw Ortio into the AHL too early, watched him get predictably blown out 9-0, and then banished him from North America for far too long (acquring Way too many goalies at the same time, demonstrating our lack of faith in him). Ortio is showing us now that he is no trivial prospect. This year, we throw Brossoit into the AHL WAY to early, which was plain to anyone who follows goaltenders, and watched him get Predictably blown out 9-0, and then we banish him to Edmonton for good. Let's hope Brossoit doesn't turn out like Ortio did after we banished him. Could it come back to bite us? Yes imho. We have a serious problem with goaltender development, assessment, and management. We give up too much potential for sub-par goalies, and we give up a lot of goaltending potential because we don't know how to manage, assess, or develop it. Is it the end of the world? No. a relatively minor trade. We Hope.

Ortio just stopped 45 shots last night for his 6th straight win....amazing. He's currently the 5th best save percentage in the AHL. http://theahl.com/stats/statdisplay.php?type=top_goalies&subType=1&season_id=43&tournament_id=0&leagueId=4&division_id=-1&confId=0 Rookie of the year looks like it's between him and Jon Gibson. Now That is something to be excited about. Go Ortio!

no. As a rule, I don't argue with posters who quote themselves and then start every post off with an insult. As much as I would love to tear your arguement to shreds, it's not worth the time taken to write the response.

He was great in the world cup. Very impressive. Whether or not there is a positive trend, I'd say that's fairly inconclusive. I would argue his best year was 2011. Anyway, we'll all see soon enough.

Gotta go to work, but Reto ain't Kipper. Kipper's worst year isn't what attracted us to him. It's what made him available so Sutter could acquire him. Kipper had stellar stats every single year prior, going back a decade. Reto has never had good stats, and his performance so far this year in the NHL is just a continuation of that. There is No comparison.

I don't know what you watch but Berra has been great and continues to solidify his position with each start. He kept them in it tonight. It's only been 3 games - not much to go on - but right now he is the clear front-runner. ok, fair enough. was just my opinion ─────╔╗────╔╗──╔╗╔╗──────╔═╗ ─────║║───╔╝╚╗╔╝╚╣║──────║╔╝ ╔╗╔╗╔╣╚═╦═╩╗╔╝╚╗╔╣╚═╦══╗╔╝╚╗ ║╚╝╚╝║╔╗║╔╗║║──║║║╔╗║║═╣╚╗╔╝ ╚╗╔╗╔╣║║║╔╗║╚╗─║╚╣║║║║═╣─║║─╔╗╔╗╔╗ ─╚╝╚╝╚╝╚╩╝╚╩═╝─╚═╩╝╚╩══╝─╚╝─╚╝╚╝╚╝

I don't mean to cause a scrum here, but based on how things are going with Berra he could be playing himself out of the NHL in a hurry. I'm not saying it's this second, and I agree he deserves more games. But that's the direction I think things are going. Sorry guys. Moving on, I Absolutely want him to continue to get more games in , because Ortio, meanwhile, is establishing himself as a starter in the AHL. I don't want them to sent Reto down as the AHL starter. He should be AHL backup to Ortio, and JMac comes back up with the Flames. I'm getting ahead of myself and I don't want to create a scrum, but it seems pretty clear that, in summation: We don't have an NHL starter this year. JMac may be the closest thing we have to it, with Ramo a close second. Berra, at this stage, doesn't look like NHL material other than his first game. Ramo's not going anywhere, with his contract. And neither JMac or Berra have made compelling reasons to bump him out either. Our best goaltender right now? I don't know. What makes a better sofa: Cactus, Sea Urchins, or Porcupine skin? Our best goaltender by end of season? At the rate he's developing, Ortio. Do we call Ortio up? No. We don't. We'll ruin him (which pretty much means we'll do it). Ortio should stay as the Heat's starter all year. NHL callups next year. Brossoit shoud stay as the Ace's starter all year. AHL shot next year. Ramo, Berra,JMac can continue battling whatever it is that they're battling for, Completely separate from our development streams (please, please). Let's keep our development and this unfolding "starting goaltender" disaster completely separate. if we can manage that, we'll likely have NHL calibre goaltending from Ortio as early as next year, and then Gillies the year after. That's when the Real battle happens.

That was actually a really good general note, C_worthy! Yes, we couldn't really ask any more from our three top G prospects. Let's hope all three continue to be starters and are allowed to Continue doing what they're doing, as it's clearly working. -On Berra....we'll see....lol. I can at least play along and hope for the best.

As in, he's a Flame goaltender and not Kipper? This is my first time seeing Vernon, Turek, and Kidd grouped together, lol To be just a bit more specific, out of these three I would place Berra with Turek, IF he continues to play like he did in his first NHL game. His window right now is somewhere between forgettable, and a goalie that provides us a chance to win most games, until one of our prospects takes the reigns and brings us back to having a true starter. (likely Ortio or Gillies, or both, in that order). That would be Turek, and I'd be extremely happy with that outcome although I'm not expecting it. the Kidd comparison...sure. Vernon....as far as I'm concerned, is neck and neck with Kipper, but in a different era. Less flash, more success. I don't expect that from Berra, although anything's possible. Maybe from Ortio, or Gillies, or one day Brossoit.

I agree he deserves far more than 2 games. I don't agree he's earned number-one starter, I think he's behind the 8-ball right now, is all. Meanwhile, on a positive note: Ortio wins his 4th game in a row with the Heat and is First Star of the game. http://theahl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=1011256 At this early stage, he is essentially neck and neck with Jon Gibson for best goaltender in the AHL, and Rookie of the Year: http://theahl.com/stats/statdisplay.php?type=top_goalies&season_id=43&tournament_id=0&division_id=-1 The only other player in the picture, interestingly, is John Muse, an undrafted free agent, younger than Ramo or Berra, who---if we didn't have such a massive goaltender backlog, I would say we should look at. He had a horrible year last year, but his track record is otherwise of NHL-calibre prospect material. So, let's give Ramo and Berra their due time, but hopefully nobody gets too attached. We have 3 different prospects looking far more promising right now, one of which may be knocking on the door by the end of the season (Ortio). And there are far more impressive veterans and prospects available on the open market.

point taken... I will say, I have pulled the "Martin St Louis card" more than once on these forums to prove a point. I've never tried it on a goaltender forum, lol I'm not suggesting that the Flames dump or cut him. But Berra's in the back seat now. Ramo and Berra should both get their fair chance. I'm not complaining, as long as the Flame's legimate goaltending prospects get games this year. Could Reto turn out to be a star? Sure he could. As could almost any NHL or European goaltender under 30.

You're right, it was just one time: (if you don't count the pre-season,or his AHL record, or his play last year for Biel, because it was his team's fault he didn't do that well in Europe)

I agree with this. I really think the best place for Ortio is the AHL as their starting goaltender right now. Not the ECHL, not SM Liiga, and not the NHL. If he is allowed to develop this year as an AHL starter, then maybe next year he gets his NHL callups. Maybe more than that. But right now, he still has a lot of development to do to realize his potential. Gillies is the strongest right now, but we will have to wait longer for him. I see Ortio as our next bright hope in goal. Although, Berra has made me blink.

Sums it up nicely. I am still a little shocked at how well he played last night. That being said, this is the same guy that was legitimately beat by Ramo in the preseason, one of the few things on here we all agreed with at that time. He is also the same guy that, in the AHL....never mind, Dirty Deeds will kill me. You can bet the Minnesota is reviewing Berra video as we speak. If he can maintain this level of play, then the conversation gets much more interesting. In the meantime.....can we loan JMac to another AHL team or something? I Like the guy, but....

I love it how we all agree 100% in mantra of giving a goaltender a fair shot and a decent number of games in the name of the rebuild..... Depending on the goaltender. Ramo....give the guy a chance. Berra: He's either got it or he doesn't. lol.

All I will say, DD, is that I don't necessarily think it's worth talking about Ramo, and Berra, and Jmac, over and over and over again. Yet this thread is 26 pages long, and it's not because those three are doing well. I have two reasons for bringing up Ortio's success more than once: 1. Because it's actually happened more than once 2. Because I'm getting tired of the repetitive talk about our goaltending woes. Especially when we have worse defensive woes, and we actually have two, maybe 2.5, extremely promising goaltending prospects that are Not that far off in the big scheme of things. I apologize for speaking negatively about Berra, but my focus is generally on how Ortio has taken advantage of that opportuntiy to once again showcase to everyone how good he really is. That is what some in the industry call a "positive thing". I don't mean to insult anyone and I will shut up about Berra ahead of tonight's game. I hope he proves me wrong. But for the record, I was actually pre-emptively defending him. We'll see soon enough whether he needs defending.
