  1. Thats kind of like Ramo tho .. he completed his contract with Tampa and then went to Russia.. his rights got traded to MTL, then we got them from MTL

and true , but even his team / league Numbers are pretty good.

    http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=112570

and dont kid yourself.. this wont be the first time we've seen him

Well, let me be blunt then.

We did nothing while Kipper was king but draft failures, acquire cheap crappy backups and never find a replacement.

He retires, we keep boardinging around, trying to do it on the cheap, trying to buy time, etc. etc.

MTL proved just how lousy the roster actually is when they lost Price.

LA could lose Quick, they had Bernier, they had Jones as understudies.

It's high time, Kipper's gone, he isn't coming back, we HAVE to get serious in net. Best goalie not in the NHL doesn't cut it anymore.

    It has gotten beyond serious.

Now we'll bring in a Finn from the K....

    No.

    Find money, get a goalie.

I'm good with giving up a yr for that, next yr.

That'll be a total of 3, I'll give you a pass, years. The first 2 he inflicted on himself.

    Treat the position seriously.

Reimer wants to be a starter, here's $3, do it then. Nothing over 2 yr deals, preferably 1, for most, not digging the availables list atm.

I've always been good with Vasilevsky, and after the "stick throwing incident", I like him even more.

Too funny with the analysts "you can't disrespect your players like that. They'll talk to him I'm sure".

Great emotion from Vasilevsky, I'm sure "the talk" went well.

  2. I know the instant comparisons to Ramo are gonna start flowing when i say this, but The Finnish Goalie Koskinen would look great in the system.

Does anybody know , do we have to trade for his rights from NYI , or can we just sign him ?

I see the Wild already snapped up Vey

He completed his ELC with the Isles, they hold no rights to him. The Finns were a trapping team this tourney and turned up some offence when they had to. So while his numbers were great, they were far from from stand alone numbers.

Tough to sign a goalie you haven't previously been scouting in a small tourney behind one of the best teams.

  3. Well .....   I LOVE the age range, lol :)

Ok...maybe a little young...even for me, although if they are the BPA in the draft, go for it.

I have a lack of faith of Canadian goaltenders, I am ashamed to say.   Parsons is good...the whole "dick" thing...if true...wories me.  I would devalue him considerably for that.

You actually shouldn't consider a bad thing. I think it's better than a goalie too shy to speak his mind. And I'm talking about on the ice.

As it relates to hockey, not as a guy, lol.

  4. I'd let teams pick out on goalies and I'd be thinking I'll take Joseph Raaymakers where he lands, might go as far as 6th rder.

SSM sucks, so if you hunt his numbers they aren't great, but he's a stable and smart goalie that will take the helm next yr.

    Another Chatham product, like T.J.

Goalies are hard to call, but he's the guy I'd target. Goalies on decent and excellent teams can be over-rated.

I like guys inundated with workload and "get better" at this age. He was solid for a team like SSM as a backup, and will take over next yr.

He entered the O as a 16yo goalie, which is unusual.

Hard to read goalies. I'm really interested in Parsons from the Knights and how he does this Memorial Cup.

He's a dick, let's get that straight, but I like goalies with attitude.

He was great in the OHL playoffs but I'm still not quite sold.

  5. Certainly no saying MM might be our best goalie in 3-4 yrs. He's big and athletic, the rest is just positioning and reactions. He has the tools, I'd like to see him play with more edge though, he seems really mellow.

atm, I believe we aren't going to "solve" the issue, but buy a couple more years ala Hiller.

I'd actually consider (don't laugh too hard) an Enroth/Nilsson tandem.

I have some concerns about choosing between Ward/Reimer/Andersson on bigger, longer term deals.

My concern is that the "appearance" of having a better goalie doesn't necessarily translate.

I'd rather someone "win" the job, I'm not entirely comfortable with "giving" it to anyone currently available.

  6. I think adding two teams at the same time would increase the cap by too much.  Also, if you add two, one is going to be from the East and one from the West, so you are unbalanced anyway.  If Quebec City is announced, you are going to have to move a team back to the Western Conference.

LV would be a west team no?

  7. Because of the expansion draft this is a great year for teams like the Flames looking for goalies.  I think there's a very real opportunity for a steal of a deal that could result in a step-change for the team.

As long as it is actually announced, and 1 team or 2. If expansion goes, at 1 team (Las Vegas), I believe they should hold out for 2, the Conferences have to be balanced, don't leave one with an extra team, and don't do 1 now and 1 later.

  8. I don't think anyone is saying a 2nd round straight up is going to get Vasilevsky and of course you will have to give up something just don't give up D prospects with high upside.

does Vasilevsky have to be the guy? I don't think he does. I see Vasilevsky as being a good, but not great, starting goalie in the future. I don't think you are talking about him as a top 5-8 goalies in the NHL so am I prepared to pay big for that? No. Not when I think there are going to be many other goalies to pick from who I think can be just as good or at least in the ballpark.

I don't disagree cross, but the conversation seemed to be that Hickey, Andersson and Kylington are virtually untouchable.

I'm just wondering who is touchable than, and do they have value?

It doesn't have to be Vasilevsky, but I wouldn't dispel him either. He's still just 21 so you can't really project his ceiling atm.

It's a little hard to predict ceilings for any of the three D prospects.  One had a good 2nd season in the OHL, and is one of the more offensively minded prospects we have.  His defense is said to be average right now.  Another came out of the Euro leagues and had a rough start in a pro league as a 18 year old.  Another had a rough 2nd season in the NCAA.

Obviously, my preference is to hang onto all three and see who shakes out.  But if it came down to 6th overall or Hickey, I would lean towards giving up Hickey.

I don't believe our 6th is in play at all for goaltending, even Schneider garnered a 9th oa, not a 6th. And the market's better for buyer's imo.

  9. I think maybe we should consider that Vasilevsky wasn't just a 1st rd pick, but a viable first rd pick in most drafts for a goalie. We won't get him for a 2nd. You actually have to give up something for him, but no one seems ready to give up anything we have to improve other positions. So if we aren't ready to part with anyone that has potential, we should be ready to stay status quo.

  10. THIS

keep it simple, dont play like you usually do when you dont have the horses to do it

    again..coaching

Hey keep me out of your quarrel!

But I was posting my anti-D rants at the start of the year. It was BBBBBad.

If I saw it, everyone saw it, particularly Hartley and Cloutier.

But one thing to remember, we aren't Anaheim, we can't afford to be sluggish out of the gate and win 26 of the next 30.

That is roster, and roster is on the GM.

If you don't have the horses, that is a GM thing, coaches don't make trades or signings, the coach has what the GM gives him.

  11. I have never said Goaltending was the only problem either. Don't paint me as saying this. I have criticized the D especially at the beginning of the year but..... They(D) were better when Brodie returned and Hamilton was given more sheltered minutes because of his return.

Man that's a bitter memory. Watched camp and all of the home preseason. The D looked horrendous the whole time.

BH says we lost in Game 1, I'd say before game 1.

What really bothered me was I thought Nakladal looked pretty darn good. But got hung with tons of minuses due to being paired with Gio and Hamilton. Wideman and Russell looked pathetic. Wideman slow as molasses and Russell forcing every pass into a crowd.

Hard to say but maybe the goaltending could have gotten off to a better footing if the D hadn't been a complete travesty.

Come see come saw. I believe Hartley should have completely collapsed his system into EVERYONE D first, forget the long bombs.

He must have saw it coming into the season but chose to ride it out. imo.

  12. The difference in part with our thoughts is I still see Bennett more so as our 3rd line C so having Shinkaruk on his LW is worth a try now. Pribyl you are likely correct that he starts and stays in AHL this initial year with some call ups later. Should this be the case then I think BT gets on the hunt for a RW. Sorry to say I'm not on the same wavelength with your Chimera or Fiddler idea. I would rather see them get a younger version like a Tom Wilson from WAS if possible.

There is nothing wrong with difference of opinion. Bennett is our 3C for now, because we really don't have the parts to settle into his style.

I expect most aren't on my wavelength on Fiddler and Chimera. Not a big deal. But I have to ask, do you not think a young roster needs that? The 4 remaining teams right now rely on vet presence. We need at least some imho.

  13. I think the next coach has to coordinate these desired elements into each line and the defensive pairings. When you look at the C's we have in Monahan, Bennett and Backlund for the top 3 lines. Let's be honest, Gaudreau is a pickpocket who will never work the boards against anyone. Monahan is only so good along the boards, his strength is in the slots and cleaning up rebounds for goals. We need a RW who can clear some space, help Monahan on the forecheck and pot some goals. Who will this be, nobody in house right now ?

Determining who is our 2nd line is going to be important, right now I think Backlund C that line only because his line will be charged with playing against the opposition's top line and Bennett isn't ready for that yet. Defensively Backlund and Frolik works well together but wo would be the best LW for these two ? Shinkaruk maybe ?

I would like to see a line built around Bennett this coming season that could fully take over 2nd line duties in 2017/18. I would like to see what Ferland could do on LW and Pribyl on RW with Bennett.

A 4th line with Stajan out of the way could be a bunch of players, Bouma LW, Colborne C, Hathaway or Jooris RW

I pretty much agree with you, but we're so jammed up to the cap pdq, if we can't shed some salaries we'll stagnate for another year.

I believe that's a real possibility. I think Shinkaruk had a decent audition, but I think he still needs more 3rd and 4th duty to ramp his D game up and see if he can find a consistent and effective style.

I'd like nothing more than Ferland really working his coordination this summer because he's close imo, he shouldn't have to be a goon but I believe that's what was asked of him.

Another thing we don't do is retaliate, like, at all, and if you don't push back, teams take advantage.

I'd liken Pribyl to Nakladl, in that you really have to let him adjust in the A, plus he'll be coming off surgery so I don't think there's a lot of realistic hope there.

A lot of this is why I scour the lower FA's for experienced grit. I'm not looking for an answer, just short-term transitions to look at style of play and show the young guys what hard work looks like.

I think of guys like Chimera and Fiddler that you might buy for a year on the cheap. Chimera will be 40 for god's sake, but he still has forechecking wheels, still potting 20, so it's not like I'm not thinking it through. Fiddler is 36 I believe, basically a journeyman career, but he'll do 50% at the dot and give you a lot of stability instead of Stajan.

These aren't solutions, but I believe our forwards need this kind of leadership on the 3-4 lines.

I think those kind of adds strengthen your locker room, scarred up old vets that have done it all, outside of Gio if Stajan is gone, they don't have that.

"Hey Chims, tell us what it was like playing against Phil Esposito!" lol Fiddler has drawn every C in the league, plays a hard game and could give Bennett a lot of insight.

Not solutions, but I think it's a good way to get your locker room of young kids a lot of perspective.

  14. That's all I am doing.  Numbers no better than Ramo don't suggest a better goalie, regardless of his playoff performance.  He may be, but barring a buy-out/cheap signing as a backup, I don't see him being the answer.

I wonder if we'll get an answer this year, or just back into holding pattern as Hiller/Ramo was.

I guess if expansion is a go, might give us more clarity. Supposed to be announced by June.

  15. Maybe "black and blue" is the wrong label, we need more muscle, players that know how to handle the forecheck and boards. Also defensemen that can take better care of the front of our net. Forwards that can stand their position in front of the oppositions net. Lastly but not the least important players that stand up for each other. We could use some hardnosed players and start to unload some of the soft players.

I agree completely. The hardest thing is to get those gritty players that have enough skill to compete.

I honestly see next to none of that in our ranks. I believe "size" is kind of overrated because there are lots of avg sized guys in the league that play that way. Heck, you could also look at Gallagher and Marchand as undersized and play a hard game.

I see Jooris first coming in with it, and Hathaway too, but we need that in a higher skill level.

One thing I think we really lack is wingers that really go hard to the tough areas and know what to do when they get there.

  16. Of course it's a mess. We are neck deep in a rebuild. But that doesn't mean you give the coach a free pass.

Too many people seem to think a bad roster = bad GM which = coach has no accountability.

Treliving has improved the talent pool and is moving the team in the right direction. Apparently Treliving didn't believe Hartley was the coach for the direction they were moving. Fair enough. Move on.

No one suggested the coach gets a free pass and no accountability.

All accountability is now on the GM.

    Fair enough.

  17. It is always so much easier to just dump on the fired guy. It makes everything that is left look so much rosier..

It couldn't possibly be the goaltenders who screwed up could it? No BH did not strap on the pads  he must be the reason why they failed miserably.

BH had no business putting Hamilton with Gio to start the season. He was only touted to be the steal of the decade on D right???

You're good DD, I'll give you that. I agree with your points, but it's probably time to move on.

With the hairy eyeball on BT of course...

  18. I think you have to look at the body of work over the regular season, not just the playoffs.  Lettin-it-in had a worse SV% over the last two seasons.  At age 32, he could be on a permanent slide, while Ramo could actually improve a bit.  Ramo adjusted his style after he cam back from Stockton.  He improved a whole lot.

No, I am not suggesting Ramo.  Too risky for CGY as the starter or even a 1-b.  I would prefer we get someone with recent .915+ stats at a minimum.

Not suggesting Lehtonen, but if a buyout makes him a $1.5 1B, why not?

Still leaves cash to further the position.

He may be up and down, but he stole games in the 2nd rd of the playoffs when Dallas was under siege. Everyone's focusing on what he didn't do, but you have to look at what he did do.

  19. Why would we want Lehtonen??? He's no better than Ramo in fact I'd consider him to be worse.Ramo swings from good to very good. Lehtonen doesn't swing..He's either good or Hilleresque.

If we consider this we should just resign Ramo and get it over with

Keep listening to the talking heads...

The only reason Dallas was involved in a game 7 was because Lehtonen stole 2 games.

Lehtonen isn't better, A LOT BETTER, than Ramo?

    Yeah sure, whatever.

The way Dallas played, they deserved to be swept.

But he had a bad game 7, that makes him horrible. Listen to analysts much?

There shouldn't have even been a game 7 the way Dallas played.

So I guess you could say Lehtonen brought this on himself for stealing 2 games single-handedly.

At what point is the roster letting their goalie down?

  20. Agreed. I tried to focus on most just names guys but your right Grubauer should get a look. I would also include names like Jared Coreau for Detroit, Jonus Korpisalo in Columbus, Subban in Boston etc.

There are a lot of options out there and I think the prices are going to be lower than people think.

    Okay!

I'm guessing at one or 2 of our 2nds gets a goalie. Our 6th oa is untouchable in exchange for a goalie. I agree the price is lower than even a mid 1st rounder for sure.

  21. IMO the decision to move on form Hartley has already been justified but let's see who he hires and then judge that decision. I don't think the two are as linked as you because i don't see it as a we need to fire Hartley to get someone better. It was a we need to fire Hartley to get someone who is a better fit.

Like beating a dead horse innit!

I have no problem getting rid of Hartley, for clarification.

Treliving just should have chosen his words more carefully.

The "he's taken this team as far as he can", for me, is underhanded to almost malicious.

You can call it nitpicking, but if your a pro GM, you need to know what implications that will raise in the media and for Hartley's future employ.

Most GM's stick to, "we want to go in another direction" and they stick to that for a reason.

Keep it professional is all I'd have wanted to see from our GM. Don't feed the lions.

Especially if it's the team you're managing and has holes as big as the sky.

Outside of that, BT, carry on, no problem.

And as far as the players not liking him rumours, I'd love to know which ones, because I'm guessing the underperformers and not good enough ones, god knows we have enough of those. It's 23 different personalities to motivate. I pay that rumour no mind, that is every coach in the league.

  22. I dont see how the blue jackets or winnipeg are alot better, blue jackets are lacking on D and winnipeg has good players up front but I think we have more high end talent at this point they have lots of young players with potential though. So you think if we had better goalies, BH suddenly becomes a better coach? Yes we have a goaltending issue, but that doesnt explain the other seasons that BH was the coach of this team.

    Right. Okay, it's coaching.

We have more high end talent than Winnipeg? When did that happen?

Scheifele=Monahan. Care to break down the rest?

Being a homer doesn't make us better than a lot of our roster being crap. Maye Ferland is Lucic, maybe Colborne is Franzen.

    Guess what? They aren't.
