Fitzgerald Regarding Conroy and the #flames : "There is a market. People performing have set that market. All I'm trying to do is be fair in that market, but you also need a team that wants to make fair deals, too, versus just extorting you for every big asset you have."

I'll say this too...purely speculation but this sounds like a guy who would agree to a deal. Get buyer's remorse and come back and say " thought about it more and the only way we can do it is if you retain".. then not budge when told it will cost more

funniest thing I've seen all day .. was obviously thinking he was doing US a favor LOL.. Good on Connie for setting his price .. and really , if Holtz was the offer then he just basically admitted he was offering us garbage ( in his eyes)

To be fair could also be taking a shot at Nash too.. they wanted Holtz, Mercer a first a second and a prospect for Saros

I think we dodged a bullet there.

Like it or not, we are keeping him away from our players.

CAR has no issues with problem children.

I find some of the trades for expensive players underwhelming.

Zucker and Okposo for basically nothing.

he never even made it to the team .. could have flipped him for the pick ourselves

    I agree with this.

Kuznetsov has skill no doubt but carries a lot of baggage.

We don't need that around our young bucks

As a joke. They trade for Allen to send to Flames for Marky... lol of course plus the deal they had, but there's the vet to insulate Wolf lol.

absolutely not .. no over the hill placefillers .. or notorious useless ones .. or projects

I'm sure there are more ..but only Talbot comes to mind

You either have it or you don't.  No one taught Kipper how to be a bonafide #1.  No amount of hand holding can mold Vladar into a #1.  Again, you can't turn lead into gold.

Who taught Seider to be a #1 D in Detroit?  Lidstrom?  Come on now.

Wolf had this year to learn already also.

At the end of the day, the Flames will be in retool for 2-years.  Spend some time in the basement and reload the cupboards with prospects.  We're not ready to contend right now.  If there's an opportunity to turn a 30+ asset into a younger one, then we have to consider it.  If I had it my way, then I'm trading everyone over the age of 30.

letme toss a bit of an olive branch here .. to be clear I'm not "Marky" or bust" .. Im against tossing Wolf in the fire.

you add a proven starting vet.. one that gives a winning chance every night at a lower salary .. I'm all for that..    No Campbells , no over the hill Reimers... Talbot comes to mind.. somebody who plays at a high level who will challenge wolf and teach him what it takes at this level and deflect any growing pains

WOW your too attached. There is really no reason to keep Markstrom…not unless you’re making the playoffs, cause the next 2 which he’s under contract definitely not…get the assets asap…Vladar can shelter wolf the rest of this season and next why keep

marstrom…nothing he can provide that the goalie coach can’t…going by your logic…those who can’t teach them why have Markstrom teach unless you think he can’t?

simply put , Wolf needs a safety net.. remove the pressure from the outside.. Markstrom does that .. now , you  wanna bring in  solid starter.. like a Talbot .. fine .. but the key is keeping the weight off his back while he learns the NHL game .. Vladar has his own struggles..

Wolf needs to be up here.. no doubt.. down there hes the guy with no competition or equal.. needs someone to show him how to take the next step without the anchor on his back

Certainly can happen, so what is the plan to get him NHL games?  Currently have Markstrom for 2 more years, Vladar for 1 more year.  Wolf RFA after this season.  Will he re-sign if no plan?  He'll become waiver-eligible next year?  All you status quo guys, answers please?

personally I move Vladar.. get Wolf into the backup role.. but get him regular starts. back to back starts.. ideally 30-35 games.. key is to get him right back in after a loss so it doesn't pressure him as much .  the better he plays the more games he takes .. if can legit steal the job then he gets every opportunity to do so

Wolf doesn’t need a mentor he need to face NHL pucks, the more the better, he’s that guy that needs to adjust.  His first year in the AHL was not great, after that he’s dominated…and he’s been that way at every level, NHL will be no different.

keeping Markstrom really helps absolutely nothing, if anything it impress and slows Wolfs NHL development time.

if Cgy was in or had a real chance to make the playoffs I could totally get behind keeping Markstrom but fact is they are 8 points out, all the teams above them keep winning…to the point even when Cgy wins they fall further out.

granted the schedule is not kind for them they don’t play only of those teams above them that they could catch.

the big question is, why keep Markstrom at this point? Do you really think they can get in?

The odds are against them, the safe bet, trade Markstrom, get Wolf some Regular NHL experience, get a haul of assets while markstrom is as good as any goalie in the NhL now…why risk him sliding back to last years performance? You get no one wanting him let alone the haul you get for him as he’s playing now.  Added you hedge against a false perception of what your team really is…drop in the standings get a much better draft pick too…really there is nothing that benefits Cgy by keeping Markstrom if he’s in happy and wanting to leave let him go.

the only reason you keep Markstrom at this point is if he’s said to Conroy I don’t want to go anywhere…then you honour the NTC but that’s really the only reason to keep him

I don't know how old y'all are in this room but some of us are old enough to have seen this story before ..

We had a goalie ..a future hall of famer ..fanfav..won us a Stanley Cup even...

We drafted a hot prospect .. can't miss..high pedigree.. started in the minors ..played great there..fans fell in love with him.. when he played ..he played great.. the old guy struggled a bit..soon they basically ran him out of town and handed the mantle to the Kidd (see what I did there ? Lol).. he stepped right into the starters role.. ton of games ..he was ok..so so...  Lost a playoff series and the fans ran him out of town...

He was never the same again.. ironically we traded his backup...then later traded him for his old backup back...

Now there were many reasons for his downfall..not the least was the coach who messed with his head ..but the lesson was he was not ready to be that guy.. another year backing up Vernon...taking his job the old fashioned way..would have likely kept him on the right path..

Throwing this new kid on to get shelled and blown up will ruin him...and it won't take long for the fan base currently banging the drum for him to turn on him..

Goalies are another breed ..they need to be eased on..coddled somewhat .. or well have another Trevor Kidd on our hands ..

Vegas is "highly unlikely" to trade the 2024 1st.

They could trade the 2025 first and then we get the 2026 first.

I say unlikely because they are hosting the draft and the only reason they get to go to the podium is the 22024 fist.  Sure Bettman will let them up there initially, but the love their show.  Having no 1st makes that less of a show.

All because of the sphwre will be showing the first round ..same reason the nyr won't trade theirs.. their owner actually owns the sphere too

It's still a concern when you draft Russian players that are playing there.

We have two right now that are not signed, both goalies.

I wouldn't be going out of my way to draft them unless the scouting is well done.

But anyway, we have lots now from Eastern Europe.

They likely all know Kuzmenko from his KHL days.

Connie has set the table to draft more and cleared out the culture club.

Don't want to be here?  Moving on.

    Anyone else?

Markstrom should be moved for other reasons.

He's a luxury now for the next couple years.

We are flush with mid to bottom pair D and lots of prospects.

We still lack top F prospects.

Are we able to do that via Markstrom or maybe Mangiapane?

Yes..we def need centres...one reason of try to claim the la kid on waivers today ..has some Logan Couture similarities ..and we can afford to let him play and make mistakes while he grows

I wasn’t sure at first,  but now it makes me wonder if they’d actually take Silayev this year, if given the chance. I thought the two years under contract in Russia may deter them

And that's it.. if you want to play the Russian game ..you have to hurdle the Initial pain of getting them here.. and be ok with them being 23-25 when they do ..but after that you get pretty loyal players

Flames made every attempt to re sign Lindholm. Ultimately he isn't here because he doesn't want to be.

Flames made multiple attempts to re sign Hanifin. Ultimately he isn't here because he doesn't want to be.

Right before they traded him they make attempts to re sign Tanev. Ultimately he isn't here because he doesn't want to be.

I don't think this is the Flames pulling the trigger on a rebuild, this is the Flames reacting to the reality that the core they built to try and win is done. It's a natural evolution of the team. I think the only reason this feels like a rebuild is you had so many UFAs in the same summer.

This is not a shot at Conroy at all either BTW, I think Conroy is doing a fine job so far. Yes I do wonder if they waited too long on Hanifin but that's it. You had to wait on Tanev and Z for cap space and while I personally didn't like it, I do understand the idea of wanting Lindholm to stay.

Just don't like how every problem gets dumped on the guy on the way out and suddenly the new shiny toy can do no wrong. Yet we don't acknowledge we'd be singing a different tune today if Lindholm and Hanifin had of said yes to their contract offers.

This is my thoughts exactly ..flames are not in rebuild mode.. big difference between dealing with your own housekeeping thru necessity..and actively flipping under control assets into lottery tickets

He stated at the beginning.. we want players that want the be here and not starting for the paycheck.. he's weeded out 5 of em so far .. Lindholm would have stayed if we'd paid his price..but Conny stuck to his ..

Now if they start selling off the control players..the Anderson's...the Weegars..for futures. ..now you know they're tearing it down
