It's all about depth for me.

Bottom 6 is where the real chess match lives. Are they dominating or being dominated? Driving momentum and drawing penalties, the opposite, or a saw-off?

As much as people will say, "just a 4th liner", the playoffs remove that. They WILL get caught out there with unfavourable matchups. Can they handle it, or are they getting owned?

Playoffs are always the same to me. Look at our own Stephane Yelle. I thought he was our MVP in 04 (and Kipper, of course). He was massively driving the bus.

Every team has great offensive players. It's the bottom 6 that is either creating good opportunities for them, or not. Which end is the faceoff in? Are you going on the PP or PK. Chipping in the odd goal or giving it up? The bottom 6 really drives the dynamic of the overall game. They'll put your stars in favourable positions, or unfavourable positions.

If your bottom 6 isn't rock solid, you're not going far in the playoff season. They're the wind in your sails, or sucking the life out of you. Even the best technicians aren't allowed onsite without their workboots. I love analogies. lol

💯... Washington likely has no cup without DSP..and there is a reason Pat Maroon still has a job.

my bet is, 18-26. Think you're right though, and they've already shown they're leaning that way. Maybe a pick and an underused player that is a few years previously developed.

my scouting fear is targeting UFA. We've had a few good hits lately, but some bad ones. Coleman, Markstrom good...

maybe some can add a few good UFA signings to ease the apprehension!?

My guess is top 4 D and centers ..  we have mega depth at wing.. and d that will be worked in.. but if we can we should  target a top 2  center .one that's not expecting high term ...and d that can play minutes in the top 4

    I don’t think I would extend Sharangovich.

Like the player a lot, I just don’t think 5 or 6 years makes a lot of sense for the organization right now. 20-30 goal wingers are replaceable, as much as I like the player.

If they were to extend him. I think 5.5x5 be the most I would be comfortable with. I still don’t love it. Look at what has happened with Mangiapane. Thank goodness they didn’t give him much term.

The Flames have too many wingers. I would really try to deal Mangiapane this summer. They’re gonna have to retain, the return will be minimal. Then I would deal Sharangovich and Kuzmenko at the TDL. Those two alone net you some more top 100 picks.

Except you forget Yegor plays all 3 forward positions including center ...  Power play, and kills penalties ..  does he need more experience at all 3, sure , but in the end he's not "just a winger"

But .. what is gonna happen , will happen..

I was highly relieved when Connie outlined just what the plan and blueprint is..  it is 100% NOT bottoming out .. it's getting better every year ..kids what played this year need to take a step next year ..

He named Dallas as the model..

Veteran core at all 5 positions ..so don't expect him to be shopping Markstrom.. if NJ wants to blow us away , maybe he listens ..but if that happens expect a vet quality starter to come back thru the door ( Talbot?)  I don't rule it out cuz when asked about Markstrom he did say " we'll see"

Trades will be for ages 18-23

Free agency ..expect some reinforcements from there .. likely nothing long term or high ticket but significant adds

From there..need to hit on draft picks on all rounds .. expect him to be more frugal with trading any picks than his predecessors. Quantity gives you a higher chance of hitting quality

Again.. we can hope..we can wish all we want , but that is the blueprint in action straight from the source

that would be the exact type of mistake I’d recommend avoiding. 8 x 8? No thank you, that’s a brutal contract.

i think the fact that he got moved down the lineup as Jersey got better needs to be taken into account. Sure he was great here and yes he is a good player but as the flames get better he’s going to move down the lineup too, or should. That needs to be considered in the negotiation.

He was behind 2 potential future hall of famers.. I'd say if we get ourselves a hischier and a Hughes that's a great problem to have ..worst case he'll still have great trade value to a team that doesn't have that luxury

I think the practice of sticking a mic into a players face the day after their season ends and expecting an insightful answer has to be the dumbest practice out there. I feel for the players who probably haven't even come to terms of what they need to do but yet we hang on every single word they said, not to mention you still have many reporters in Calgary still trying to work this angle of players maybe not wanting to be here.

I'll preface this by saying that I really like Yegor but the Flames have to be VERY careful with that extension. Yes I understand opportunity and all that, but this is a soon to be 26 year old player coming off a career year. Prioritizing that and giving them what they want falls flat far more often than it succeeds. Now i'm not saying that that they shouldn't sign him or that he isn't worth it but they should not be treating him like he is a core piece and just giving him whatever he wants to keep him here. It has to make sense because in the grand scheme of things Yegor is not the type of piece you should really be building around, he should be a great secondary piece. Flames need to keep that in mind.

Agreed .. I don't put a whole lot of stock on those statements unless they're definitive . I do like Kadri shutting it down for example ..he likes it here ..wants to be here ..period

I would argue however that yegor should be a key piece. Yes it was a career year ..but that was due to where he played in the lineup. This wasn't truly a breakout becaue in NJ when he was given the opportunity to play up the lineup, he produced at the same rate he produced here .he just got buried down the lineup due to the Hughes ' and Hischers ahead of him. He got I think it was 22 in NJ his rookie year cuz he was played higher .. I think you can safely consider him a 25-30 goal scorer . Giving him the contract you tried giving Lindholm would make sense to me

The things that jump off the page for me is around changes to the game.

The NHL said that it wanted to increase scoring way back when.  Scoring was down in their minds and it made the game "boring" for the new fans.  Hard to sell a 0-0 regulation result as exciting.  OT helped a bit, but that has morphed into a possession snooze fest at times.

Make the pads smaller.  Okay maybe that made it harder for poor goalies to make saves.  Increase the number of shots by cracking down on certain infractions.  More PP = more penalties.  Instructing the refs to call more penalties.  I can remember watching playoffs where you could attempt murder on the ice and the refs overlooked it.  Now they call so many bad penalties that scoring can't help but increase.  One thing they don't call as much is running the goalies in the process of scoring.  At most the goal is turned back and some refs will waive it off.  At worst it's a PP for getting the challenge wrong and the goal counts.

Wolf looks small in nets because he is small in stature.  He needs to beef up.  The height is one thing, but almost every goalie plays low.  No Ken Dryden's these days.  Wolf plays angles and at times is too fluid and loses the net, but his reflexes will win him games.

To me, changes to equip started to evolve around the time goalies started to get bigger . In the old days they relied heavily on athleticism. Bernie Parent was the first to really master the incorporation of angles..made him dominant . Nearly every goalie had some form of cheat code.. I recall Marc D'amour had a cheat web on his catcher .. rules started coming in regarding cheats like that ..and soon they regulated size and dimensions of equipment . An important note is Roman Turek, due to his "size " had to get special league permission to wear what was classified as illegal due to the fact he was the tallest goalie the NHL had ever seen ...he was 6'4..   nowadays 6'4 is passable ..  Wolf is 6' and has heard the knock on his size his entire career.. hed have been a big goalie in the old days .. probabaly a first rounder .

Goalies were getting so big they practically just had to stand there and let pucks hit them.. so changes were made to not let them get even bigger due to their equipment...  Now goalies are not just big but they are getting athletic again. A reason markstrom is so good

  7. So the season of overreacting to players exit comments has now begun..  first one to the podium is Yegor .

When asked he sees himself here long term ..was pretty non committal..

Personally I take that as he's young, just had a break out season and wants to be paid ..if that's all it is I don't have much concern that will be done .in fact it should be a priority ..

Playing devil's advocate..maybe he doesn't see himself here .. west coast, big market..all the usual..  how long do we give Conny to translate that into the sign or you're being traded ultimatum?  I think it's important not to have distractions next seasons like we did this year ..players like yegor and mangiapane need to be dealt with before the season starts .

Again personally I think he will be Priority signing for Conny ..but if has to be traded then he's a player you should be able to get a haul for

  8. Barring a lotto win Into the top 5, and fully ignoring who his dad is .. the more I see of Tij the more I think taking him in the top 10 isn't a reach.. none of the regular players I see consistently In the 6-10 range wow me as much as the potential he's showing

I know it's a non starter, but interesting.

On one hand, Gaudreau was always fun to watch.

He was a one man zone entry machine.

    Regular season thrilla.

Got the fans out of their seats.

On the other hand, that was then.

Don't know how he would fit this new version of the team.

Huberdeau might be a playoff stud that we lacked.

Hard to say since we haven't been there.

He doesn't fit whatever we have built here.

    At least he hasn't.

Hard no for me ..  it's like returning to the scene of the crime..he pushed the first domino ..Johnny had more down years than up and the truth is we no longer have the supporting cast to maximize his skillset ..

Huberdeau is finally getting chemistry with some players ..second half of this season he's looked more like the guy we traded for .. no think passes.. his linemates expect them now and capitalize ..  i think it would set us back at least 2-3 yeare..

Tbh.. i see a lot of Johnny in Zary.. the zone entries, the iq.. until he got hurt he was legitimately in the Calder finalist conversation

You might be onto something.   But I would refer to it more as injuries, usually.

Which, can happen when you give a 20 year old goalie 50 games.

Absolutely..  that's part of the runway required .   60 games in the A where you're relatively not breaking a sweat is about the same grind as 20 in the NHL.. play him with a guy who knows what it takes ..has done the grind ..Marky was on waivers a few times in his career before he locked in

Talbot never fails to give his time with the King in NY as invaluable to his career now ..didn't play a ton but saw first hand what a player like that does ..prep, mental attitude.. it's more than just competition

Bursting on the scene did in fact ruin Hart, I agree.   But not the kind of scene you're talking about.

I figured somebody would bring that up..  just purely professionally he hit the skids long before that stuff hit the fan. He was garbage a soon as they handed him the ball his second season .. wasn't ready .

The list is way longer ... Martin Jones..and I'll go to my grave saying Kidd was Mishandled ..but with him it was more than just being given too much too early..

In a perfect world , Markstrom with 2 years left is the ideal runway for Wolf.. in reality they likely will trade Marky.. I just pray they bring in a solid #1 to pace him in..  looking at the UFA market the only one that fits the bill is Talbot

We we will see how many starts Markstrom gets.

    Likely most.

But I don't have a problem with Wolf understudying Markstrom.

Should have been that way half way through the season.

There is little point now in starting Markstrom.

We aren't going 12-1-1 to finish the season.

    Evaluate.

Agreed ..  I don't think many of the pro wolf fanatics realize , that if he is to be brought along properly. He's about 3 seasons away..

You look at the top goalies in the league.. the vasilevskys, the hellybucks, the Gibson's ..the Saros's..  they got to where they are by following the proper path .

year of pure backup . Maybe 20 games?   Then more of a split where they start showing they are the next man up.. 3rd season they displace the master ..

The flip side of the coin you have the Harts , the Knights.. the ones who burst on the scene and get too much too soon.. they get ruined

  13. 19 hours ago, robrob74 said:

thing is, he probably didn't fumble the Markstrom trade and for whatever reason, I still think it's an ownership thing, it got shut down. They probably didn't see the flames being able to compete without him and were like wait a minute, we can't do this thing.

which to many here who said Wolf should have been up this year, that might have been the reason wolf should have been, to give him time with Marky and I just don't see Vladar as a future option.

But I agree, the organization botched Markstrom deal and probably don't get the return in the summer.

I still don't think it was botched .. we had a price and it wasnt met ..simple .

But., playing devil's advocate ..if the reports are true that NJ is still hot for markstrom.. theyre sliding quite nicely Into that high pick range with their slide .    Cory Schneider fetched a 5th overall... Now we're wading into fair return category

I don't know that a GM would go off on the owners the way BT did if that was reaaly what happened with the Zucker trade.

Honest question .. when did he go off on the owners?   He was seen yelling and slamming doors .  But that ties right in with the notion he needed to find Murray and lost the deal because he couldn't

  15. This is the kind of garbage I hate from Francis.. he lights fires where there aren't any..

He effectively started the whole Markstrom mess by a story out of nowhere about " what if".  What if the flames asked you to waive ..    shortly after the new jersey story popped up..

Now he obviously has his sights set on running Kadri our of town

    yesss! Please do! :)

it's the org philosophies, not just the GM's. We like to blame GM's but we could have had Zucker when he was one to get. A deal was had but the owners said no. How many other deals like that.

How many of us wanted to trade Valamaki?

im just adding to your arguments not trying to contest them...

To be fair ..Zucker did a recent interview on this .. the owner didnt say no..it was still at a time when Murray had final sign off on all trades apparently.. and he was mia .. on an airplane somewhere and they couldn't reach him to get his sign off before the deadline passed

  17. 4 minutes ago, travel_dude said:

The reasons for trading him are mostly asset management.  He has value now.  In 2 years, his value may be very limited.  Trade him this summer for a 1st in 2025 (if after the draft) + a high level prospect or player.  Don't trade him and let him walk as a UFA in 2 years and have nothing.  Have we somehow improved?

If we decide to hold him for one last run next season and he regresses, then his value plummets to almost nothing.  Missed opportunity.  Again.

I'm in the camp that we can't keep holding onto to very tradeable players thinking tthey will somehow have the magic and make us a contender.  If you aren't building and improving, you are going backwards.  We have very little in the F pipeline to get excited about.  Our current roster has our best prospects on it already.  Good enough for middle of the pack but not suddenly a top 10 team.  Getting there and staying there should be our goal.

Don't disagree . It's all like a jigsaw puzzle of reports . But it sounds like the offer was something like Holtz a first and a prospect..  that was likely agreeable ...then it now seems like NJ suddenly wanted retention and woujdnt pay for it .. and when the report came out that now they don't need retention .I nearly guarantee you the offer was less

  18. 1 minute ago, cross16 said:

I don't think the price goes up the longer you wait, because you risk having teams fall out of the race, you risk teams not having cap space etc.

Plus you also have the risk that if Markstrom doesn't play as well or you have the risk that he does and he plays you outside the top 10 and your giving up a mid first to Montreal.

Actually it's built on the premise that the Flames should WANT to move him.

We don't need to go back and forth on this again but I will say it is 100% a mistake if Markstrom is on this team next year.  Makes no sense for me to not take the future assets. Yes, mentorship blah blah I get it.. but that isn't more valuable than the future assets they've been offered.

this team is building for 3 years from now so keeping a 34 year old goalie is illogical to me.

And I've moved closer to your thinking .just with my caveat of needing abother vet ...

But.. under no circumstances Shoujd they be giving him away .. by all accounts I feel good we didn't take the devil's offer

  19. 5 minutes ago, cross16 said:

I agree, this is why I wonder if the Flames over played their hand. The assumption is the goalie market will get better but i'm not so sure I see it the same way. There are going to be options and if the Devils thought Calgary's price was too high yesterday, why would the suddenly pay it in the summer?

I do think Ilya Sorokin is a pretty interesting free agent. 29, wasn't that long ago some thought he was amongst the better goalie in the league.

Ullmark is really interesting. Sounds like there was a deal in place yesterday to go to LA and he said no Will he say no again in the summer or did he just not want to move at the deadline?

What does Florida do with Knight? There were some suggestions they were open to moving him.

Lots of moving parts to the goalie market. Flames might have more options to negotiate with but i'm not so sure it's going to lead to the type of deal they are after.

All good points ..but most are on the premise that the flames want to move him... They are willing to, obviously.. but I see nothing wrong with setting a price . Meet it, fine..dont, we're quite content to let him run our nets for the next 2 years

After July 1, the focus shifts to the next 2 contestants on "will he sign or won't be" ..  mangiapane and Kuzmenko

  20. 4 minutes ago, flames-fan-in-jets-land said:

Why Talbot or Rittich? Talbot is older than Marky and Rittich has been a 3rd string goalie at best the last few seasons. If thats the path in the offseason then target Nedejkkovic, Brossoit, or run with Vladar. I would also guess any deal for Marky would include a goalie coming back.

My "caveat" if you will on being willing to be ok with moving Markstrom.. is to put Wolf with a solid veteran goalie.. one who we are ok with getting the bulk of starts . But short term enough wolf can beat him out ..Talbot Fits that bill.. .. Rittich has always shown he can be strong in a low enough workload

    I won't go nuts,

I will say my piece, as others have, and leave it there.

    Conroy shoulda traded Markstrom.

He's made some good moves going into the tdl, and should be commended for them.  He most likely missed out on the most important one though.

My statement is obvious and I'm not the first to make it, but I said I'd weigh in after the tdl, and, doing it.

Based on his comments ... Fitzgerald wasn't that willing to pay for a new one

Looking at the UFA goalie list for this summer it's pretty weak.. and that's putting it mildly ..

This summer should be much better return and competitive...   If we were willing to take a run at Talbot..and as a last resort , Rittich.. I think we could move Marky for much more a haul return in a competitive market
