  1. No Surprise. Even post deadline I hope they keep him down there. Call up their own like Kuznetsov or Solvoyov instead.
  2. I think for Hanifin i'm expecting a 1st, B+ level prospect and an additional mid round pick. That's the value i'm putting on him. Could be variations of what you get (ie 2 C+ prospects instead of 1 B+), but that's the valuation range I'm thinking.
  3. I'm just pointing out that if your desire is to get their current first round pick lower then this trade should have been done weeks ago, or in the summer. I think you get less but 3 games just isn't going to swing their first round pick much, and maybe at all. Flames with Tanev could have easily lost their next 3 games. I agree that they should trade Markstrom and i'm of the opinion that deal should be done already. Not willing to put that on conroy totally because i don't know for sure what the package was and the NJ ask but I do think the offer was good enough that i'm surprised the trigger wasn't pulled. but not ready to criticize as I don't know enough facts.
  4. The injury risk is real and fair. Flames currently sit in the 14th with 3 games to go before the deadline. Unless you were projecting them to win all 3 with Tanev and now think they are going to lose all 3 then this trade has almost no impact on their own first round pick. Nor is the value of 14th to 11 worth 2 2nd round picks.
  5. I don't question the value here but I do think it's fair to question the approach. Most of the opinions out there pre trade where Tanev should get you a first straight up and maybe a conditional 3rd/4th. That would also put them in the same category of the David Savard trade. Behind the Chariot trade but that's a tough one to comp too as it's turned out to be a high water market. If you assign a 2nd round value to the prospect, probably fair IMO, then the 2nd they got, plus that value would equal a first. I don't think Dallas was giving you a 1st and this prospect as IMO that would exceed the Savard trade. The big questions is if conroy had of waited could he have gotten a first out of another team? I can't say yes but my gut says he would have. Not a 1st and a prospect, but a 1st. So what do you value more is the question? I think it's clear the Flames wanted this prospect and valued him more than a move from late 50s to the late 20s. Late first round picks are probably the most overrated asset across fans so I get the approach. I got the sense from hearing Conroy speak about the deal that a first round pick could have been an option but it would have meant passing up this prospect. I also think it's fair to be disappointed in the prospect because players with his profile almost never make the NHL so there is some risk there when looking at the deal. He has the profile that I hate drafting but I am very ok acquiring it via trade. So all in all, I do get why the response is negative because on the surface there are some fair things to question about the deal. It's not a home run but it's solid in my books because I think the value is in the ballpark and I don't mind the prospect. Just think some of the reaction to this deal is fair.
  6. Sounds like, from Conroy anyway, that's what got them the prospect. Dallas didn't want to give him up.
  7. You can't trade cap space for nothing anymore, so NJ has to put the goalie in there in order to get the 4th. So either they don't like him or don't plan on signing him, but he is in the deal to get the pick. NJ has a lot of flexibility this year but next year it tightens up with both Mercer and Toffoli needing deals. 2 different things when it comes to retaining salary.
  8. Solid deal. Not exiting but it was what I was expecting for Tanev. I know the first was rumored but I had a hard time seeing it. I’m a bit surprised they didn’t wait longer to see if someone blinked closer to the deadline but there is risk in doing that too. Prospect sounds like a B to B minus level guy which i would say if you get that and a 2nd you’ve basically gotten the value of a first. He has limited skill set which is a challenge for sure, but playing full time as a 20 year old in the A coming straight from the O is pretty decent. Conroy has done a nice job building up some D depth.
  9. Prime Kipper was as much fun as any player the Flames have every had in my lifetime. Was such a joy to watch and i'm glad they are giving him this honor. He deserves it. It's really a shame he lost a year of his prime to the lockout and had to suffer through 2 years of Keenan or I think he'd be remembered very differently outside of Calgary. He'd be knocking on the Hall of fame door IMO, he was that good.
  10. Biggest change for me is you have no passengers. Haven't been able to say that this season until now. I think the combination of the trades and the youth have been the difference. Mang was the last one and I think he's been fantastic the last few weeks.
  11. Could very well be true, but if it is it’s a pretty big blunder by the team that could even turn out to be a massive error. Time will tell. For me it’s still not clear what they will do.
  12. Very possible. I just don't think that is the Flames approach and I don't see any of those teams making an offer that is going to come close to Flames asking price. I think it's NJ or bust on Markstrom for now. Then it's waiting until the summer.
  13. It's starting to sound like the Markstrom to NJ deal wasn't quite as close as it seemed. So if NJ wasn't willing to pay the price 2 weeks ago I can't imagine their recent slide is going to make them more likely to pay up but as Friedman says it only takes 1 call and their is still time. Wondering if Conroy overplayed his hand here.
  14. Interesting that Hanifin isn't on here but it doesn't really matter. if the Flames get the returns posted here we should be thrilled Spoiler: I don't think they will https://www.espn.com/nhl/insider/insider/story/_/id/39603974/nhl-trade-deadline-2024-predictions-contracts-players-playoffs
  15. Not a fan of the morning show either but I actually think that all of is true I'm not a believer Markstrom is traded anymore, at least not at the deadline. I think Hanifin and Tanev will play right up until a deal is done. I think there would be more urgency to move Hanifin but I kind of feel like Tanev will be moved either on or very close to the deadline. i think the Flames want a team to panic. I do think the Flames still have an interest in re signing Hanifin if he happens to change his mind (which i don't' think is likely). I don't think they are negotiating but I don't think they pulled their offer either.
  16. Back skating which is great to see. Reminder, he was cut by a skate blade in October
  17. He's really gone down hill in a hurry with me. I use to really like his hits and now I don't even listen. Every since he went on his own he's gotten very "hot takey" to get the clickbait headlines. Last straw for me was when he tried to tell everyone Dube and Hart's absences weren't related to the WJC. He's more of a mouthpiece than an insider. I think he puts stuff out there that certain people want him to. I'm not sure why but he really seems to have an axe to grind with the Flames this year. Every Flames player he's discussed he's cut down their value on.
  18. Agreed. I would move him now or in the summer too. But at the same time I can acknowledge there is an argument to keeping him. Not one I agree with it but it's there. but if you project your team to be in the 10-16 ish range next year that's where IMO it becomes not smart because your just accepting risk you don't need to.
  19. Which is just not smart as that guarantees your sending a low teens pick to Montreal. The 2025 pick is only top 10 protected. The Flames should only keep Markstrom if they think they can be a playoff team next year, if they don't think they can be a playoff team then IMO they need to trade him. not worth the risk of giving up a 11-15 pick to Florida
  20. It be interesting to see where Tanev sits now. Rumors were the initial talks he and the Flames had didn't go well either but perhaps that tune has changed. I think he wanted term and the Flames weren't interested. If he has changed his tuned (willing to sign for 2 years or something) and you can't get a first out of a team I think keeping Tanev is still a strong option. But if he is after term I think you have to move him, or move him if you get a 1st plus.
  21. Speculation I heard was that it was Ottawa. It sounds like they really like Tanev and feel that's a player they need but obviously are not in the rental market. Would have been interested in making a deal to get a head start in signing him.
  22. Was hilarious to see the praise he was getting during the Oilers heater. I still think that's a team being held back by a terrible GM
  23. Best part of watching that game was seeing the national media have to admit that maybe Edmonton is not as good as they thought the were during their win streak. I mean it was obvious but it was funny how quickly people jumped on that bandwagon. Skinner is legit, their the cup favorites blah blah blah.
  24. They were very wiling, they just didn't have the best package in the deal. In the case of Mark Stone, he was only willing to sign a contract with Vegas so all other teams were rentals. Flames weren't willing to include Valimaki for a rental but Vegas was willing to do Brennstrom (who they drafted BTW) to make the deal because they knew they were getting him long term. Stone wanted to play for Kelly Mcrimmon again. When it came to Eichel I think the Flames actually had the better package because I have heard they offered Tkachuk. It made Vegas part with Tuch and that's who the Sabres really wanted. Vegas was extremely lucky to get a player like Tuch in the expansion draft. So sure you can trade for the players but it relies on factors that can be outside your control, namely luck. Also if you don't draft well you won't have the assets necessary to make these deals. So really it comes down to the need to draft high end talent because if you are relying on trades to do that, well good luck.
