So are we going to give Stamkos a bucket of cash for 3 years?
How much is Reinhart going to get for 57 goals?
Guentzel is the other big name in free agency.
I just have a feeling that Conroy is going big game hunting.
I was a big fan of throwing money at Stammer last time he was a UFA but I feel he's too old now.
I also doubt he signs here anyway.
IF he did though it would certainly improve our PP. Aside from Ovechkin he's got the deadliest one-tee from the left circle. Also gives Huberdeau passing options.

It's never clear cut, you take a risk either way for sure.
Phaneuf is interesting because we're at the 10 year mark, and a little past.
https://www.sportsnet.ca/2010/20-years-of-hindisight-the-great-2003-nhl-re-draft/
on the other hand Phaneuf is not interesting in the sense that he had a whole lot of unrelated off-ice issues.
Basically in a redraft, he's unchanged. Would we have drafted him again knowing what we do now? Hell no. But assuming all the other teams also had hindsight, we wouldn't have gotten much better in that spot.
It was a very low scoring era for D. No 30-goal scoring defencemen to compare to. So sadly, the "wait 10 years and look at the redraft) is also frought with difficulties. but adjusting, generally the D who could put the puck in the net did better. Just, 15 goals was a lot back then instead of 30.
Not a lot of strike-outs that year. but, the ones that did strike out are interesting.
Brayden Coburn: 6'5 giant, with great defensive intelligence and skating.
-Couldn't score a goal to save his life
-NHL career was same. Loads learned these skills later and surpassed him.Beware the giant mature players in the top 10 who can't score. We have a few of them this year, and most will probably go onto have long NHL careers. The question is, will they be remarkable.
The real story of that draft, the big learning, is how Weber got drafted so low imho
Weber was not the best skater but overcame that with tenacity, a big body and that legendary slapshot.
If I remember correctly he also wasn't more than average defensively until his mid 20s. Which helps perpetuate the idea that defensive instincts can be taught later on, but being gifted in other areas cannot.
Man I miss Weber. Fun guy to watch.

I assume you mean would FLA acquire Huberdeau's contract?
FLA is win-now... Huberdeau put up 100+ points with them recently... 80-ish on average. IF any team can get Huberdeau back on track, then it would be FLA. Sam Bennett is still there, etc. Huberdeau is getting paid $10.5-mil but putting up $5-mil worth of numbers... Spencer Knight is $3.5-mil dead cap space... Can both teams come together in the middle?
Short answer, no. Nobody should... but so, Flames retain and modify that contract for FLA. Or better yet, what's the number you think FLA would do it? Flames retain $3-mil-per?? (better than a buyout right?)
Better, yeah. Not by much though.
I think we are stuck with Huberdeau for awhile and we're going to have to hope he pulls a Jeff Skinner and snaps himself out of whatever it is thats dogging him mentally.
He seemed a lot more at ease when 2024 hit. I just hope he builds on that in the new season.

Yes, the "comparables"(potentially) for some of these kids is crazy... Leshunov-Hedman, Catton-Sakic, Buium-Makar, Iginla-Iginla, Silayev-Chara, Demidov-Kucherov and on it goes. We shall see, but if a team does have this perspective it is easy to see why the picks may be all over the place.
I take draft comparables with a grain of salt.
Hell, Yakupov was compared to Pavel Bure back in 2012 and we all know how that turned out.

Apparently he scored the most points by a 17year old D in the KHL, ever. Low numbers not telling the whole story?
Just the fact he played the year in the K as a 17 year old is impressive on its own.
Thats a men's league

You don't think....there's any chance at all, he's referring to Niewendyk? It would have been a prominent thing for him when he entered the league. In any case, I don't really care what he says, because he's surely smart enough to not show his hand. I somehow believe he's quite good at compartmentalising conversations and which one goes where. Or he probably wouldn't be able to maintain all the relationships that he does.
Conroy is an intelligent man for sure.
He doesn't say things that could blow up in his face almost immediately like other GMs we have had *cough* Feaster *cough*

Kind of reminds me of Monahan in his draft year. Bad team, shot and can score but not at all dynamic... Think Flames need to shoot higher. From the report, if he does really well he might be able to become an average NHL skater. Yikes.
I felt the same about the skating comment.
Mobility is so important in today's NHL I think it is of utmost importance to get someone who is at least a "good" skater already.
Hard pass.

I disagree, Ron's boner for McDavid and the Oilers is far more nauseating.
As much as I try to follow all Canadian teams in the playoffs I cant STAND the constant fawning over McDavid.
Id be lucky to last a period watching an Oilers game.

Final Mock 2023 NHL Draft: Intrigue after 1st 4 picks | NHL.com

Cosentino had Honzek at 16
Scout’s Analysis: Final ranking of the top 80 prospects for the 2023 NHL Draft (sportsnet.ca)
Honzek ranked 12th
Honzek ranked 9th.

2023 NHL mock draft: Top 4 is locked in, but who follows? | theScore.com

30th
Conclusion Sam Honzek was not an off the board pick, there was also very little consensus after #1. I do find it unfortunate that a guy who was barely healthy this past season is getting written off so fast, and partially from the people who give Sam Bennett 3 million excuses on why he didn't pan out here. He wasn't my guy at the draft but my hopes of the team excelling outweighs my desire to be right on a message board 10 years later, I can also admit to being wrong when players I would take don't pan out.
I agree. As I've said before I think Honzek will be fine.
Hes what 19/20?
Just needs time

Jeez, 7-6 is kinda ridiculous for a playoff opener. Especially with Hellebuyck in one of the nets.
We had the vezina runner up in net when we opened the series against Edmonton 9-6 in 2022

Dallas in 7

Canucks in 6
Oilers in 7
Hate the Oil, but LA still isn't deep enough in Net and if the goalie can pull it out. They've been so inconsistent as a team.
I think the Canucks added the right kind of depth in the summer, what the Flames needed to do.Avs, not a believer in Jets. Don't like Toffoli or Monahan.
Dallas is deep. Depends on VGK stars coming back healthy enough. They've probably been healthy the whole time tbh.. lol

Stars in 7
Avalanche in 6
Canucks in 6
Kings in 4 (one can hope on this one.
Realistically though I think Edmonton takes it in 6 or 7)

Tampa in 6
Toronto in 7
Rangers in 5
Canes in 7 (This last one is the one I'm least sure about. The Islanders have proven to be sneaky good in the playoffs in recent memory. Canes are a great team though)

Cochrane's, and Calgary's Summer is generally too chilly, and windy to grow great tomatoes to full maturity, unless you grow them inside or in a very warm, wind-protected, sunny spot. I built a 9ft by 11ft hothouse from linked pic piping and heavy duty plastic that protects from wind and keeps it very toasty all Summer long while adding a few weeks at both ends of the season. I grow all types of tomatoes, Beefsteak, paste, cherries, about a half dozen of both Bush and Vine varieties... In the hothouse they are fully out of the wind and have 4-6C frost protection so I typically can grow well into October. If you are trying to grow unprotected in Calgary I'd be trying anything with like 60-75 day stated maturities(from transplant date) and start seeds indoors by early April or buy transplants, since you only have June, July and most of August frost-free. Good luck!
Great tomato gardening where I'm at.
Beeeaautiful San Marzano.
I dont do it myself but have a friend who hooks me up with a bunch of tomatoes and jarred sauce every year because she and her family have such a big harvest 😁

I don't know seem like they will lose some key guys this year. At what point does age catch up to some of the dmen and does age and back issues catch up to Stone. But counting that team down and out is definitely a mistake, evidenced by last season and predicting they didn't have the goaltending to do anything significant.
They are almost certainly going to have to deal Whitecloud this offseason.
Add to that Pietro is 34.
I could very easily see Vegas being a non-playoff team in 2026.

don't believe the hype, they're just letting him score those goals because of his Dad.
Jokes aside. Iginla has looked pretty dynamic in the O-zone so far.
47 goals in his first full regular season too.
I'm starting to dig the idea of potentially drafting him.

8 is interesting because Tij comes into play. He's arguably ranked 9-13 right now. Taking him at 8 is reaching but forgivable possibly.
Hes definitely a scorer which is something we lack

For what was expected to be a "deep draft" in 2023, one where no one was trading first rounders, was the first rounder one we should have taken, without hindsight? Not knocking Honzek, just asking if maybe we might have needed a different approach to the depth.
and can last year or the few years before's approaches hint at what to expect this year? Is it good, bad, exciting, worrisome?
Many on this site seem to have their wishlist, and many are writing Santa.
I was worried Honzek was a reach, and maybe needs a bit of time to grow into himself. I hope he becomes an NHLer. I get wanted a player of his stature and possible power, which makes it all that harder to read an 18yr old.
I think Honzek will be fine.
At worst he will be a Backlund replacement imo

In some ways this is a typical Flames game. Mistakes killing us.
We survive the 5-3 only to get scored on the 5-4.
2nd goal a bad giveaway.
Wolf has been very good, but he isn't quiet enough.
Both goals he slid too far out.
The 5 hole was the result in sliding across.
I get that he's small but he stands his ground pretty darn NHL-ish.
Stay quiet, cover the angles, and don't lose the net.
I hope Wolfie gets the EDM game.
Markie hasn't been back to Roger's since the playoffs there.
That would just mess up the Oilers so much to lose to a rookie goalie.
Losing to this version of the Flames.
Only game I care about them winning.
I know this is a day late but his glove save on Kyle Connor was a tremendous display of patience and athleticism.
You can definitely the qualities thats made him a special goaltender so far.

I don't know the stories of the other players nominated, but at quick glance it was players that were injured, or had a long road to the NHL. Hrumph. There are guys deserving no doubt. Maybe Kylington doesn't match all the qualities necessary, but he is certainly a shining example of what tolls the sport can take on a person and what it might take to make it back. I personally think it's the kind of story that the NHL needs to show at this point. Fighting, scandals, rapists (suspected), CTE, player gambling, player douchebaggness; nice to have positive stuff for a change.
Nothing to add to this.
I agree wholeheartedly.
Shilly is well deserving.

Only about half the players came to play in this one.
Kadri line was really good. You can just see the fire in Kuzmenko to get more after he pots the first one.
Liked Pachal and Kylington for the most part.
