If i were Huska my number 1 priority would be doing anything I could to get Huberdeau going. I get the counter point of "well he's only 1 player and you have a team to worry about" but we've seen over the last 2 years this team is going to get into the playoffs without an effective Huberdeau.  By no means his fault but i've been surprised at the lack of creativity when it comes to Huberdeau.

I agree Huberdeau playing better. was actually surprised to see that over the last 12 games he is the Flames number 1 (or 2) player at 5 on 5 in most chance based categories. He's also one of the worst when it comes to on ice shooting % so there is definitely a element of bad luck here too.

He's still an elite passer. I think a lot of his struggles are a combination of bad luck and his linemates not anticipating his passes.

That chips away at his confidence and it kinda snowballs from there.

  2. Good game for Calgary taking advantage of a tired Canucks team.

Thought most of the players looked really engaged.

Liked what I saw from Huberdeau and that line as a whole. They were pretty much dominated 5v5 vs MTL so big bounce back for that trio.

I really didn't like what I saw from all 4 officials tonight. From tossing a player on nearly every face-off, to giving Pospisil a roughing minor after Hronek was the only one dropping the mitts, then Greer gets the only minor on a nearly identical play late.

Didn't change the outcome buts its really bothersome to watch.

    GFG!!!

Yes, opioids and painkillers is another ugly problem that the NHL has and wants to keep quiet from the mainstream.  It could very well be that he was drugged on pain killers to rush back from his injury and now it's become a major problem for his life.

When you look at the play itself it is rather miraculous how quickly he returned to action after a fall like that.

I expected him to be out for an extended period after seeing it.

These guys are in tremendous shape though and that can lead to quick injury recovery.

Well the 20/20 hindsight is fine, but we also had one of our best years with Johnny/Lindy/Matty.  That was with Backlund as our defult #2C.  Lots of career years there.  Coaching and (perhaps) a burnt out goalie killed us against the Oilers.  Whatevs.

A rebuild ends up looking like Young Guns 2.0 for a very long time.  And that's if they get every piece right.  You only get a handful of Bedards to show up in a decade.  And you get about 20 teams every year looking much like the Flames.  My beef is games that are not at all entertaining.  Like last year's complete schedule.  Sutter hockey.  Hockey that went out of date when the Kings last won.  He had some good ideas that would work for some teams.  Not many.

I'm not as down on the team makeup.  I don't like certain styles of play, but I think we just have to figure it out.  A rookie head coach.  New D system.  Still no Kylington, who would help move the puck.  We have to break the habits formed under a lousy coach and become a scoring teasm, not a perimeter shot team.  We lost in a shootout to a big skilled team with some spare parts.  Our shots were not perimeter, but I would like more traffic.  It's what guys like Kadri and Huberdeau can do.  Ruzicka played in the spot you score.  Dube tipped in a shot that comes close to 90% of the time from the point.  Where was that the rest of the game?  And those two are actually described as small or play small.  Kadri is a less fat version of Tkachuk.  He hasn't played a lot like that recently.  He should be drawing more penalties.  Huberdeau is too content to pass off, but he's playing with a leftie on RW.  Fine for one timers but not for acceoting stick to stick passes.

The thing to remember with those Kings teams as well is they likely would not have won if Quick wasn't playing otherworldly.

Sutter hockey RELIES on stellar goaltending when it comes down to it.

As for your second point I would like to see them try Coronato with Huby for the reasons you outlined

I maybe was impressed with Ruzicka more than I should have been.  Going back to C, he looked good.  Some good passes, good positioning and decent D-zone play.  I did see a cringe worthy back hand pass near the blue line, but it caused no problem.  Want him to be harder on the man in the O-zone.  He was good on the PP.

I'm not sure why they pulled Dube off the top line.  Maybe due to the team being owned at times, but I don't think he was the problem.  He played with Backlund half the night after that.  I can't be certain, but Mangiapane took his spot on RW.  Didn't notice exactly, just that they were playing him on the top line.

The Kadri line seemed to be the most consistent.  With all the D-zone time, I don't know which line was the worst.  They all seemed to struggle exiting.

Yeah Huska swapped Mangiapane for Dube about halfway through.

    Only line change I noticed.

    Paid off though IMO

  6. I watched Honzek very closely this preseason and he may take a few years but the talent is definitely there.

Once he fills out and adjusts to the speed of the pro game we will have a good player on our hands.

    I wanted ASP or Barlow.

The Flames say their comp for Honzek is Rantanen. That's aiming awfully high. But if you get something close, you're probably happy.

    Rantanen is a franchise winger.

Anything close would be a home run.

Vintage Markstrom saves one of two of those.  First shot goals always set the team back.  60 seconds in and the team shows it's not ready.  I'm not here hanging anything on the goalie for the loss.  As I said, he gets better with more shots on net.  He certainly did in 21/22.  TBH, even last year to start he was good for the first stretch of games.

Right now, I am a little concerned with the pairings.  They haven't exactly looked like they were ready for regular season play.  Yup, the F bear a ton of respionsibility.  But, since it means nothing right now other than looking good in pre-season, I will hold any real criticism for the season.

I think we should keep Dube with Kadri and Ruzicka.

Put Coronato with Huberdeau and Lindholm.

Govich with Backlund and Mange or Coleman.

4th line with what is left.

I probably had a different opinion of the top line, but I think Coronato may be special.

Has looked like he is ready more than the rest of the F.

Lindholm is smart enough defensively to make up for him.

Govich hasn't found a niche that works for me yet.

I honestly think we need to trade Mangiapane for a real top 6 player.

He's not close to Dube in skills.

I agree on Mangiapane but for different reasons.

I think he has the skills but his skating (balance in particular) doesn't match.

Dube makes it look easy skating-wise in comparison.
