You know, I hate to say this, but I could see Toronto winning a cup with Treliving driving the bus. He's a smart guy, and we just might really miss him.

    Love.

Agree. I think a lot of the "what-ifs" that could've happened during his tenure were results of the management getting involved.

Like the trades that almost happened but didn't. (Stone, Eichel)

The Stone one is the worst for me as I believe the rumored ask was Valimaki++

Most of us were pretty high on him at the time but it seems ownership was even more so as this obviously didn't happen. Fast forward to now and we lost him for nothing, still don't have Stone, and Valimaki started showing glimpses of that 2017 1st round pedigree with Arizona.

I blame Hartley more, his earned never given mantra  took some of the useless vets like O'Brien and Galiardi out of the lineup and replaced with guys who weren't good enough but tried their hardest to be.  I also blame Burke for not trading Cammalleri who went on a heater after the deadline.  And Feaster for acquiring Ramo who provided quality goaltending when Joey MacDonald was who we needed to ride at the time.

    This is a fair assessment.

Ownership mantra of being remarkably mediocre really hurt us at the time.

The longest termed coach since 1997 was Bob Hartley.

If you look at the complete list only Bob Johnson lasted longer.

Every single other coach managed 3 seasons or less.

We need to find a coach who will last a bit longer.

The list begs the question how many times can you fire the coach because the players assembled under performed.

    This is an interesting list.

Id love to see some of the other teams.

Tampa Bay with Jon Cooper and Colorado with Jared Bednar immediately jump to mind for me as guys who have been around for awhile recently

    Yup kind of funny.

The strength of that draft was in the top half of the first round. The one that really stands out with the Poirier/Klimchuk picks is Shea Theodore, that would have been fantastic, but of course hindsight. Burakovsky and Hartman went after as well, good players but not worth getting upset over.

Drafting is hard, but it's crazy that the Flames were able to have as competitive team as they did when they only went 2/14 between the 2013 and 2014 drafts. Only got NHLers out of their 1st picks which were 4th and 6th.

    That I did not know.

    And kinda wish I still didn't 😅

Yeah that was a major miss, for sure. That entire 2013 Flames draft class they whiffed after Monahan

I remember a lot of fans being so angry the Flames took Poirier over Shinkaruk lol

Then we ended up with Shinkaruk anyway. We've actually had 8 players from the 2013 first round in our system at some point in the last 10 years.

3 have provided meaningful value for us; Monahan, Lindholm, Zadorov.

    Pronman’s latest mock.

Flames taking RHD Axel Sandin-Pellikka. RHD, would fill a major need in the organization.

My issue is that he has them passing on Colby Barlow, Zach Benson, Oliver Moore and Brayden Yager.

Big reason why it would be nice to have multiple  1st’s this year

I have PTSD from the last time we held multiple first round picks.

I love how these videos are only made now because Treliving is the Leafs GM,

They can't help but talk about the leafs.

I watched a video about the Canadian teams seasons last year and they'd spend 2 minutes talking about a given team and the next 10 minutes comparing said team to the Leafs in various ways.

    It was pretty embarrassing.

Denver is a big market?  Didn't they buy a cup?

Buying includes all the players they added in trades, like Manson and Lehkonen.

I agree that you need superior drafting and development.

But coaching has an impact the the dev and team aspects.

You definitely need younger guys on ELC's and cheap 2nd contracts to build under the cap.

You can't expect to get there when you pay $5.75M for a 4th line bruiser.

Or you let go three top 6 players.

The Avs have made some savvy moves but one that flies under the radar is the acquisition of Devon Toews.

I think he's a huge piece that helped push them over the top. He has been brilliant for them

You have seen my rants about Sutter no doubt.

I don't agree with everything people say, but I will post my opinion about it.

    Up to a point.

At some point it's best just to walk away.

Agreed. I wasn't trying to add fuel to the fire. Just pointing out respecting opinions is a two-way street.

    It is allowed.

Just like it is also allowed for everyone.

If conundrumed feels your post is BS he is allowed to say so.

It works both ways my guy.

In regards to size, here are the players that support that we have good avg size:

    Markstrom

    Vladar

    Zadorov

    Ruzicka

    Hanifin

    Tanev

Only Huberdeau as a top 9 forward is over 6' at 6'1" and he's a playmaker.

This is imho why we can't really generate enough offense. We just don't have the size in fwd presence to get in the goalies face and be very physical on the forecheck like Lucic. We don't get to the dirty areas. Not much of a cycle game. I'm not saying that I want everyone to be 6'2"+, but we do need a couple of power forward types with skill because we really don't have that in prospects either. Barlow is listed either 6' or 6'1" but he plays more like a smarter Coleman with a wicked shot and even better releases. His releases are like Tkachuk with power. He changes his release angle 6 ways from Sunday. But if he gets to 9 and Detroit doesn't I'll be choked. They need a C but really need a finisher beyond Raymond.

So I think Musty's a really talented LWer for us. Not just the 6'3", but his frame can really handle his height and he's a very good skater. The real charm is great hands, in or out of traffic, he's got great mitts. Also good pass/shoot reads and great at both.

    I like Musty as well.

    Where is he projected?

I feel like he will be gone by our pick.

I agree. I get that special stats say that the team should have been better all these years, but good teams aren't ones that are in one year out a bunch and then in another and out. Good teams are in every year.

we say 4 posts made the difference, or OT, or goaltending... there were a lot of things. It wasn't one thing.

Honestly I think making noise when you are in the playoffs is more important than making it every year. That shows true progression and desire to win IMO.

The Iggy and Kipper teams made the show pretty consistently after 2004 but didn't have the pieces to ever get past the 1st round.

Mitch Love is ... really good.  IMHO, if we don't offer him a head coach position there is a very high chance another team will and we lose him entirely.

Plus there's nobody else better suited to get our prospects to translate to the NHL, so he actually has more value here.

To me, I would be Absolutely, totally shocked if Mtich didn't get the head coach position.

Quenville knowingly turned a blind eye to straight up full blown sexual assault under his watch.  I'm not calling him a deviant but I am calling him someone you do Not want in any progressive organization whatsoever unless you really Want to start sweeping things under the rug and have them blow up in your face a few years later.

That was...criminal.  It's not Just a PR nightmare, it's so much more than that.     This is...Movie-level bad.  And could be one some day. Stay. Away.

"oh you know my players are getting raped but I don't want that to distract us from winning"

      Yeah.  full stop,  No.

    Let Edmonton have him.

This may be the first time I've ever agreed wholeheartedly on a post you've made.

    Strange times are afoot.

I don't think so, I think it's just an example of how the way Sutter does things can support some whole alienating others which creates a favourite child syndrome and the neglected one.

Not to mention Backlund is about as consummate a professional as we have ever had.

If you're trying to come up with an arguement about how terrible my criticisms are,

You might want to consider something other than examples of when I was supportive.  Like, you weren't able to find a criticism that I was wrong on in the last 15 years?

    Looks desperate ;)

I gotta admit. The smug replies are a little much for me sometimes. 🙄

Our LD should be set for next season.

    Hanifin

    Zadorov

    Kylington

All three will be pending UFAs.  Trade all three next TDL..  Hanifin should get a 1st + prospect + fringe NHLer.  Zadorov and Kylington should get 2nds... But possibly a 1st if they have a good season.

In 2024/25, our LD will be,

    Poirier

    Kuznetsov

    Solovyov

    Wouldn't miss a beat.

I believe Weegar and Z are both better on their off side.

Sutter's first two years were great though.  Traded 2nd round picks for Kiprusoff, Bourque, Nilson, Huselius?, etc.  Those trades were legendary.  I only wish he also traded our 1sts.  What could have been instead of keeping the picks and drafting garbage.

Yeah, probably Feaster as the worst then.

Aside from those particular moves though Sutter had some head scratchers as far as draft picks and *ugh* that Phaneuf trade.

There’s three candidates that stick out to me.

Conroy- Would appear to be the leader from the outside. The organization could be “status quo” with the same intentions to ice a competitive team.

Futa- the ties to Sutter. He was once a sought after GM candidate. Now in the media. This opening is likely his best and maybe last chance at a GM chair.

Sean Burke- Maloney ties to Arizona. He’s a well respected mind not only in the goaltending community but in the management world.

I don’t think they’re getting a Tulsky. Bowman has been thrown out there, they should not do that at all. He would be too expensive anyway. Dina’s wouldn’t come here either. It’s going to be a first time GM.

Hard no to Bowman for me.

For many reasons, but first and foremost... Chicago didn't win a single round of playoffs after Kane and Toews signed their contracts.

I’ve got no problem with BT. He’s a good NHL GM.

The biggest mistake was the Hamonic trade. The 2018 1st should have been conditional. Should have had the option to make it a 2019 That trade cost the Flames Dobson.

I usually hate going back and looking at drafts, because who knows how the Flames would have picked, but Dobson was a top 10 talent that fell.

Every GM has their mistakes though. That’s just one that sticks out to me though

    Could have been worse.

Could have traded down and grabbed Jankowski instead of having Vasilevskiy like my favorite gm of all time did 🙄
